Jul 7, 2011
How can I start the vncserver serivce before any uesr log in? because I only have one screen now what I already did is when I log in the vncserver service going to be startup, but I want it can start before I log in. I try the "chkconfig --level 345 vncserver on" but after I reboot, I still cannot access the system before I have a log in action.

dear, in centos / fedora, I can config to start a permanent vnc session by setting the /etc/sysconfig/vncserver file when the system starts. Is there any similar configuration in opensuse which give me a permanent session?

Does anyone know a secure method for starting a service after a user logs in to the desktop environment? There are a couple of issues that I'm trying to work around / troubleshoot and this would assist with doing that.
I'm running Fedora 11, not sure if that matters for this question.

I'm running VNC Server on CentOS5 on a brand new installation, this is for some of my students to use specific software via VNC on their machines from home that they otherwise don't have access to on their Windows machines. This has been working fine on our previous server for a few years but the hardware is now outdated so I have upgraded and put a fresh install of CentOS 5 on. This works fine for about 24 hours and then eventually one of the session ends up freezing where the user then can see everything on their session, the cursor can move but they cant click a single thing.

I am trying to VNC into a server to which I have no physical access (but I can ask someone to start a session or something) but can ssh into. I have gotten a VNC session working by sshing in and running vncserver, although once the VNC session died in a confusing manner.
I don't know how to start a VNC session any way but vncserver, which is odd since I'm sure that Ubuntu's Remote desktop should somehow allow me to do this by default. The server by the way is being used as a desktop by someone else. Also, how do I tell if my VNC is encrypted and if it isn't how do I make sure it is?

I'm a little new to Slackware so maybe this isn't the right way to initiate vncserver on boot, but here's what I've got. The last two lines in my rc.local are:
/usr/bin/vncserver :1 &
mount.cifs //192.168.1.99/shared /mnt/shared -o username='uname',password='passwd'
the second line runs successfully on boot, but the first line doesn't. However, after I am logged on, I can execute /etc/rc.d/rc.local and both lines will run successfully. Does the system need to be fully logged on to start the vncserver, or should I start it elsewhere other than rc.local?

I have a couple of problems - and am new to Fedora which, up until about three days ago, was flawless.Am using KDE on F13. (Gnome & LXDE are also installed.)First problem is easy to solve, I think. How do I prevent "inactive" windows from fading out? It's an incredibly inconvenient feature and utterly defeats the whole purpose of the "Always on Top" option! I can't seem to find the option anywhere? On to KPackageKit. It has been trying to update KDE for the last three days but always gets hung up with the message: "Waiting for Service to Start."I notice that this problem might be listed as a Bug? - but not entirely sure.Is there a straightforward solution to this or is it, in fact, a bug?It also wants me to repeatedly restart because a new Kernel 2.6.33.5-124.fc13 has supposedly been installed.

I performed the first update in 4 months to my Fedora 12 Constantine. I also removed a 'dial-up' package (figured i didnt need it) and the KDE package after the update. Firefox was not getting a connection to the internet at this point. The network view showed the ethernet as inactive. Everything besides Firefox appears to work fine.
I restart machine.
It boots until right after the fedora logo fills up. At this point my dual monitors go to sleep. No response from anything. When I start in interactive mode I hit y for everything. Everything works great until libvirtd, libvirt-guest, and local. After y on all three nothing happens. I can type on the screen but no response. It just sits there. I can boot into text mode and do whatever I want. What can I do? What other information do I need to move forward?
I have looked at the Xorg.0.?? i forget what its called. I am not versed in reading the messages in it. Same for the other logs I looked at.

Just installed a Sparkle GeForce 8400 GS on my Dell Dimension 2350 running FC9. As stated, every time the system goes to start the card, a stack trace occurs. I know the first thing that everyone will ask for is the output from the stack trace, but for the life of me I can't capture it. Tried grabbing the STDOUT and SDTERR from the 'service start' command, but nothing interesting is ever there. If anyone knows if and where such things get stored, just letting me know that would help. I assumed there would be something in /var/log, but no. For some reason, there's a lot of python errors in the output. I imagine I could try to type in as much of the output as possible, but I'm hoping someone has seen this before.
Anyway, I've tried the Nvidia install executable, the nvidia-newest RPMs, the nvidia-96xx RPMs and they all fail the same way. I also can't get the card to come up as the primary device on boot, which I don't think should be a problem since they all boot into VGA mode, don't they? If I disable the internal video setup in the BIOS, the machine freezes on bootup with blinking lights on the keyboard, which I imagine is the BIOS's way of telling me there's no monitor available.
I also tried getting the nv and nouveau drivers going with no luck. They are installed on the machine, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't know how to get them configured. Not really a driver guy, I guess. Also, the reason I installed this card is to get TVOUT, and I don't know if generic drivers will have support for that sort of thing.
At this point, I'm just looking for a way forward. One thing I remember is that when I removed the 'fglrx' drivers (because they conflicted with the NVIDIA stuff) I remember that a few python/fglrx based packages went with it. I'm wondering if that could be at the root of the failure, given the python errors in the stack trace.

I have setup a CentOS 5.5 server as a DHCP server. That will be it's only task in a Cisco callmanger VoIP environment The DHCP server that comes with CentOS 5.5 is from ISC V3.0.5 -redhat.
The server (HP DL360) has two physical NIC's of which only NIC1 is used (ETH0)
ifconfig shows:

The interface has a fixed IP setup.
My dhcp.conf file looks like this:
Code:
When I start (try to) dhcpd via the service interface or via the prompt as
Code: service dhcpd start
I get an [FAILED] message and the following is in /var/log/messages
Code:
But when I start the DHCPD on the comamnd prompt in debug mode it looks as follows:
Code:
and /var/log/messages shows:
Code:
Why does the system ask a declaration for eth0 0.0.0.0?

I am trying to give access to ONE single user to start and shutdown tomcat server. The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....

In an effort to reduce/eliminate adware, I installed Provoxy from the F12 repos using yumex. The config file is unchanged except for the addition of the this line: forward-socks4a / 127.0.0.1:9050 .
I note that rpm placed the following (/etc/rc.d/init.d/privoxy), and that in that file are the following lines:
I seem to recall that network manager was changed somewhat to allow those using static ip addressing to NOT do dhcp on boot. Could this be the reason for the non-starting of the privoxy service on boot? Sometimes it starts on boot, and other times I must manually start it in Gnome's System->Services.
If these lines and the network starting is the problem, how do I fix it? Can I comment out these lines in this file, or is there somewheres else where I should be looking?

I'm new to Linux. I'm trying to install the VNCserver using SSH connection in a remote pc with Fedora 13. I would like to access the Gnome through remote connection. I did the setup Iptables freeing ports 5901 and 5902. Also set up vncserver and user. The user "aquiles" is a user of the system and also the vncserver. The problem is that I am not able to start the service. I think that seen anything related to Perl. Displays the following error:
[Root @ sinahome ~] # service vncserver start

The file /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
