Fedora Installation :: Fc11 First Boot Hangs On "Verifying DMI Pool Data"
Oct 18, 2009I had Fedora11 (default layout) running on a separate hard drive (winXP on the other drive). After the FC drive failure I replaced the drive and did a fresh install again. This time I tried a custom layout to keep the /home on a separate partition. The installation went without a hitch, but on first boot the system hangs with "Verifying DMI Pool Data......"
XP boots fine though. Looks like grub doesn't get loaded. I can boot with the installation cd and get into recovery mode, everything seems fine on the fedora disk. Fdisk result:

Fedora Servers :: High CPU Usage When Starting Services On FC11?
May 9, 2010so my server is doing fine, but there is one odd thing I would like to fix. When I start and stop services, the CPU is maxed out for about five seconds each time. The services start the same speed, but it still does this. Small things like lm_sensors don't do this, just things like httpd and sendmail. THis server was upgraded to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD a few months ago.

with the same symptoms each time
the dvd drive lite is on and the hard disk activity lite is on and the system is frozen.
have to power off.
I have fc11 installed on another system (amd) and had install issues also but that was
with the preview.

Jun 24, 2009I upgraded from FC10 to FC11 yesterday.I had no problems using FC11 after I looked into the bootloader (not intuitive - Ha!).Tried to boot up this morning; and things seemed to work well until I tried to call up Firefox (added a few themes yesterday).The window pops open; but the computer freezes on the spot with an alarm (generic "beep", w/o the finishing "p").Tried it with Epiphany; and I get the same results with the exception of actually getting to the Home Page.Yum works for the most part - I reinstalled Firefox (no effect); but couldn't reinstall epiphany (keeps saying "there is no such package - did you mean 'epiphany'". No typos on my part - go figure). Doing Software/Package Updates (via System Menu) freezes the box as well.Did it with the system monitor on. It doesn't appear to be related to CPU Usage.
Had a FC10 liveUSB and used it for awhile (e.g. to check out the forums). After giving my ISP some grief about downloading speed, immediately received a note from their Abuse Department, saying that my machine had been infected with a virus and had been sending spam emails (post upgrade to FC11).

I tried to upgrade to FC11 via download and DVD and in both cases the install hangs on bootstrap right after remounting the root filesystem in read/write mode.
Since it hangs in this manner, I have not been able to gather any logs...
Ubuntu :: 9.10 64bit Won't Boot - Hangs At 'Starting Up...'
Feb 9, 2010I don't exactly when this started, but I hadn't booted my mythbuntu box for a while. When I boot it now, it hangs after grub at 'Starting Up...'. I was running 9.10 64bit, with 4GB Ram installed on an AMD64 3700+ ASUS A8N5X mobo. How can I resolve this? Can I modify boot options by hitting the Esc key before grub? What options should I use? I made no changes myself, it just happened on the next reboot. I hope that I won't have to burn a livecd. I only say that because the only machine that I have with a decent burner is my 9.10 box.

Jun 5, 2010I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:

with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

Nov 4, 2010I did a fresh FC13 install on a computer and after trying to install the nvidia drivers the machine hangs on starting atd when it boots.Initially, I tried to install the nvidia drivers with yum but it didn't work. The nvidia module was not loading and although I blakclisted the nouveua driver the machine was still picking it up. Anyway after spending a lot of time trying to find a solution online, I decided to download the drivers from nvidia and install it myself.So I did that, run sh <nvidia-package>.run and the installation was completed without any complaints. Since then the machine hangs when I booted it up. Also I don't see any errors in var/log/messages or in /Xorg.0.logHere is my grub.conf:

When I restarted I chose this version to install and after a brief loading screen it goes to a black screen with a cursor prompt and pretty much stays there. So I go back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 which boots up just fine. Jan 3, 2011I installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.
Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.

I've read about some ways to overcome the problem of my /boot partition being only 200MB in size while the newer versions require 500MB. The option of "filling the free space on the boot partition to be less than 100MB to cause preupgrade to download the loader" appeals to me. But what I don't understand is: is the 500MB requirement of the new versions is transient during the install or a permanent requirement? If I do this trick of first filling up the free space on /boot then freeing it up before the reboot, what will be the permanent disk space requirement of FC14?
Are there any safe (and prefarably simple) ways to increase the size of the /boot partition after decreasing the size of other partition? Here is the output of "df" relevant to the /dev/sda disk:

Jul 16, 2009So, I had fun with this one the past week. I had an FC11 system running just fine. Then one day it would not boot - it was hung somewhere inside the init script of the initrd image. CTRL-ALT-DEL would reboot the system. Using grub editor, I could temporarily delete the initrd line and boot into the system OK. But what was going on?
mkinitrd was of no help to me. I even did a yum update, which got a new kernel, which also generated a new initrd - no joy. I extracted the initrd file system and edited the init script. I eventually hit on this tidbit: If I commented out this line:
daemonize --ignore-missing /bin/plymouthd and rebuild the initrd image - the system would finally at least tell me what the problem was: mount failed for selinuxfs on /selinux. No such file or directory.
So, I examine the root (the real root, not the initrd temporary root) - and sure enough, no /selinux. I make one and reboot. The system goes into a "targeted policy relabel" operation, reboots, and I am back in business - even with my original, unmodified, initrd.
I have no idea what happened to my /selinux directory, but I think the initrd "init" script needs to check for this directory's existance, and make it if necessary. Or at least report that it isn't there. In FC11 right now the system just HANGS without this directory being present, without any clue as to what the problem is!

Sep 4, 2009I'm running into this issue after installing Fedora Core 11 off DVD. Anaconda install the first part of the installation, then after reboot it goes into run level 3 (I think, where you have to login as root) I noticed that it said xserver failed to load before it actually boots Anaconda.
Maybe I should pull a graphic's card? I have logged in as root after the base install and did a lspci, and you can see the two Nvidia Quadro FX1700's and you can tell it is an intel board with the Intel Corp 6311ESB/6321ESB PCI Express ports. Also you can navigate through the linux directories via ls \. I tried YUM to find/install the graphics drivers but it says something about metadata not being configured. I checked the IP address with ifconfig and had to manually assign an ip.
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Installation Hangs On Starting UDev
Dec 21, 2008I want to try the new 11.1. When I start the installation (x86_64 DVD), the startup is hanging. The last message is "Starting udev...". Keyboard is completely frozen, only reset button is working. Mobo is an Intel DG965WH with 4GB RAM and ATI Graphic card (ASUS1950pro). My opensuse 11.0 runs without any problems.

So my install hangs up at the point "starting sound card" (well it is in french, but it should be this translation in english). My sound card is a classical realtek hd audio card (from a laptop toshiba x200). In the terminal(/dev/tty1) I can see that it is hanging at Starting Yast2. Jun 15, 2011I'm trying to install 11.04 natty on an HP Probook 6455b and failing.
Using two different burned cds I'm able to start the install process
1) I can get to the initial menu and interact with it to change command line options
2) I can boot the kernel and see services trying to start
At some point the system hangs and I suspect because upstart is starting services in parallel the console messages aren't showing the same consistent point for the hang.
with my last run using --verbose on the command line the last few lines are:
* Starting bluetooth
* Starting configure network device security
* Starting configure network device
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
Another run I just did (with network cable unplugged) ended with the same but also
* Stopping save kernel messages
I should note that the Pulseaudio line's asterisk is red or orange, does that indicate anything?
Mostly I'm looking for suggestions on how I can further debug and diagnose this problem to resolve it.
The system previously ran 10.10 fine and runs Fedora 15 (which should have a very similar kernel level) with no apparent problems.
Probook 6455 = basic HP laptop with AMD Phenom II mobile processor, 6G of RAM, ATI 4200 embedded graphics, etc, etc. Nothing special really.
Server :: Hangs At Starting Domino Services During Booting Up?
Feb 11, 2010I joined a company as an IT staff 2 months plus back. I now encounters a problem that the booting up hangs at the time when it is starting domino services. I have no clue where to look at and duno where to start checking. A little description of the server. : It's a lotus notes domino server for employees webmail service. -> Now it is down. it's an external dns server: recently high volumes of query cache denied surfaces. it's also our proxy server. The only way to get it up and running is to turn off domino service. The system is running still with high volumes of queries I last checked.
Althrough it can boot up now and DNS & proxy are running, I couldn't access the system anymore. It will hang when I attempt to log in from the command prompt. Below is an illustration:
iasaix login: root -> I attempt to log in using root user
password: xxxxxxxx -> I keyed in my password
-> The cursor comes down and just keeps blinking and nothing happens.
Remote access is not possible as it has sshd disabled by default. Our employees cannot access their webmail now, which is a major issue.

Sep 29, 2009I have been using F10 since its release and have not had any trouble until now. During my last session, I ran an update. Today when I boot my desktop (single boot btw), it hangs just after the boot loader. The only sort of warning is:

I have browsed the forums to no avail. Other have the same issue, but with no posted solution. I have tried disabling NetworkManager, but I think it may be the service that runs after NetworkManager.

Fedora :: F 14 Hangs At Boot Up?
Jan 16, 2011Boot-up hangs at black screen with blinking cursor in upper left corner for over 2 minutes before continuing. I select F 14 with grub hit the enter key and go straight to a black screen with blinking cursor. Hitting the esc key does nothing until boot-up actually starts. Afterwards, boot-up is perfect. I had this problem a few upgrades ago and the fix was simple but I can't remember what I did. I've searched every phrase I can think of and can't find a thread that addresses my problem.
I have a F 13 kernel on my machine and have no problem booting it.
Dual-boot, F 14 and windows 7, 64 bit.

Just say no to ATD, and boot goes well. Of course, I don't really want to do that each time. How do I remove it? That is, get it out of the init.d or rc.d boot procedure

Jan 26, 2009I just have installed FC 10 on a box that I will use as a router/firewall box. On the box I have three interfaces (eth0, eth0.704 (VLAN), and eth1). When the machine boots up, only eth0 and eth1 come up. If I run /etc/init.d/network restart, then eth0.704 will come up. If I add that command to rc.local, then all interfaces come up at boot.
I have the directive ONBOOT=yes in ifcfg-eth0.704. What would cause this vlan interface not to start at boot on the machine?

May 21, 2009I am currently using FC10 on a Dell 4600 with 2GB of ram. I love Linux as it is the most stable OS around. My end goal is to have the machine boot and start the vncserver automatically, eventually using an ssh tunnel to make it secure. My main problem is the vncserver is not starting on boot, I must login as a user then it works great. the error I get is

Basically what happens is the vncserver fails on boot however, if I login to the Fedora box I am able to connect and I get the GDM login screen. I have read many, many posts but have not been able to get over the boot issue. I really want to make this a headless box I can put in another room so I have more room for my musical gear.
