I have purchased a computer from a flea market with Fedora installed.When the machine is started Fedora loads and I have the sign in screen but I do not know the correct sign in name.Is there a master sign in name?How can I keep Fedora from loading and allow me to get to the Windows start screen?
View 2 RepliesI simply installed 5 or 6 various packages and shutdown the laptop, later I opened it and turned it on GRUB came up as usual showing the usual options, I selected the option I always pick and Ubuntu came up as usual with the progress bar of 5 or 6 dots that show the typical progress bar but it stays like this forever. I tested it for up to 3 hours it didn't budge.
I tried selecting the recovery option from the GRUB menu and it appears to load normally with a bunch of console output but then halts with the last message displaying:

But before the message there was a lot of warnings that appeared to trail off as there were so many, here is an example of one of them as they all appear to be the same just different rule numbers, this is also the last one before the error:

Naturally a Windows user, because all of my computers were with pre-installed Windows and I was young.. and I get used to it..In the time of.. growing up I became programmer and learnt how bad is actually Windows coded. Not only that.. Linux has better support for developers.So.. I was Windows user till yesterday. I finally decided to work on Installing Linux or more specifically - Debian.I love everything part of the GNU - GIMP, GTK+, Gedit, GCC...
Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup.It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.
However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.
Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder?There I got lost completely.
I'm running Fedora 10, it seems to boot normally, but the login screen never appears. all it shows is the cursor with the blue circles running around it, meaning its working on something. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and still no login screen.

there is a way to change the OS boot screen from the blue loading bar at the bottom to something more fancy. For example if you take a look at Oracle Enterprise Linux 6 they have a loading screen that makes an "O" on start up. Note: I am not talking about GRUB, I already know how to change the grub boot screen. If so can someone provide the steps needed to modify the OS loading screen.

I recently installed Ubuntu in my PC, without uninstalling windows coz it`s not really mine, its my father`s. When he saw the boot (like a month later, he REALLY uses the PC...) he went crazy and instantly ordered me to "uninstall that thing". Of course i`m not stupid to do that after a month of seeing how Ubuntu is... I want to know if/how can I make the pc start on windows auto, without prompting by showing the choose system screen, and when i open boot menu (i don`t remember, but i think its F-eight) i have both choices, so I can keep Linux without him knowing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:

Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
another post about this. I just don't know how to handle this, as I'm pretty nsee the grub loading menu, but screen just freezes after, no way I can reboot, or open a console. In recovery mode I can log as root in console, though.I run Debian 6, 64 bits. I have an intel q6600 and a nvidia geforce 9800GX2.
View 9 Replies View Relatedlike any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

I've got an older graphics card I'm trying to use. It actually runs fine through the bios and even works when fedora is loading. But once fedora finishes loading half the screen turns into thousands of multicolored horizontal lines.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to build a dual boot ubuntu 8.10 and fedora 10.I have ubuntu sucessfully installed. with a free partition ready for fedora.I cant seem to get fedora past the beginning of the install. Once it says its loading anaconda, my screen either goes blank, or the anaconda fails and the install exits, telling me to reboot my system.I have downloaded the DVD twice. once from the website, and i think when I bruned it it didn't burn right, I then downloaded it from torrent just to be safe and reburned at the slowest speed. It passes the media test.
I have been reading around it may be cause of my video card?My computer is the following.AMD Athlon +2400 XPXFX Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT or something close.80 gig hard drive1.5 gigs of DDR ram.MSI Motherboard not sure of model off top of my head.I really wanna get this dual boot working, As I feel fedora may have advantages over ubuntu. You all know this beutifull boot up screen you get after fresh Fedora install. And i have home encryoted so i get also beautifull screen (with cute lock icon) to type my password in. But as soon as i install nvidia drivers this screen is gone, instead i have this ugly progress bar to show me how boot is progressing and when i asked for password i get this out of resolution konsolesque screen. How can i get back my beautiful boot screen.

I have made a bootable pen drive (2gb) and have a 30gb partition on my hard drive for unbuntu. I am trying to try the OS by USB at the start into The BIOS If ya gets what I mean. It successfully loads The Options menu where you pick a choice like run from usb. So I run from usb and and it Loads Ubuntu just the purple background and the beans underneath it loading forever.

I am using Windows 7 Build 7100* with a computer I built a year ago. Intel e8400,6gb Ram, Asus P5Q SE Pro,and 100gb left on hard drive (30 Excluding cause I partitioned it.
Last time I installed the ATI graphics driver on my PC, it was'nt working fine so I uninstalled that driver. I restarted the PC after uninstalling the driver but then, when PC boots and start running the services the screen just hangs and I don't get into the desktop.
I tried to run the xfs service using service xfs restart and also gdm service using service gdm restart, but in both the cases it shows that Unrecognized Service. So, I think it means that the package for xfs and gdm service is not available in my PC. Is that so?
I tried to get into the desktop by running startx but it gave the following error :-
Fatal Server Error: no screen found
consult the fedora project support at [URL] for help.
check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I have Fed 12, running on kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 I have newer kernels installed, but they will not boot into X.
The updater installed the kernel 2.6.32.21-166.fc12.i686. I can boot into runlevel 3. But if I then give the command startx, I almost get an x-window, I can see the top and bottom, ermm, wadjecallems, beams, but the screen is blank, and then the machine freezes. I can only switch off.
I'm currently using the 10.10 beta of Ubuntu with all of the most recent updates installed. When I boot up the computer, gwibber fails to start up and when I do open it, it shows an icon in the notification area (Which I flat out do not want) and does not use the indicator applet at all (even when closed).

It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug
Well, to start off my graphics card didn't work but I got that fixed.
When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed
I can't change my system time, shutdown or reboot under system or my username in the top right hand corner. I have to su and manually type reboot or shutdown to shutdown. It is like the computer is completely restricting me from using it.
When I try to get into my firewall an error comes up
