Fedora Hardware :: Older Graphics Card Geforce3 - Finishes Loading Half The Screen Turns Into Thousands Of Multicolored Horizontal Lines

Mar 11, 2011

I've got an older graphics card I'm trying to use. It actually runs fine through the bios and even works when fedora is loading. But once fedora finishes loading half the screen turns into thousands of multicolored horizontal lines.

Ubuntu Installation :: Purple Horizontal Lines On Screen After Kernel Update

Jul 24, 2010

I just got the new kernel update (2.6.32-24-generic, according to "uname -r"), and I went to restart my computer as the system requested. When I selected the new kernel from the boot menu, the Ubuntu splash screen came up, and then it did this subtle alternating shades of purple horizontal line thing. Then a vertical line appeared towards the right of the screen, and then everything faded into this cloudy, bright white splotchy...thing.

The keyboard was still responsive, and hitting ctrl+alt+delete restarted the machine, at which point I tried to replicate the problem, but everything loaded normally this time. My questions are: What the heck happened? Why? Is it dangerous? Why or why not? My machine is a Dell Inspiron 1501, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, ATI integrated graphics, AMD 64 Anthlon X2 processor. I'm dual booting with Windows 7 as I learn Linux.

Fedora :: Horizontal White Lines Appearing In Gnome 3?

May 29, 2011

I have weird graphical glitches in Gnome 3. They appeared in RC3 and now appear in the final release, but they didn't appear in beta. Here's what they look like, there are horizontal white lines appearing in different places where they shouldn't appear:

[URL[

it can be a result of this bug:[URL] but my glitches look different than the ones in there.

I have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. Should I just update my system regularly and hope it gets fixed, or is there some way to fix it by tweaking some settings or stuff? Maybe by installing the official ATI drivers? I'm not sure, but I've read somewhere that the official drivers don't work well with Gnome 3, is that true?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Pull Pictures From SD Card. Pictures Half Green Or With Lines?

May 1, 2011

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Black Horizontal Lines On Desktop?

Aug 10, 2011

i have an dedll inspiron 8600 laptop. i just installed the new ubuntu, 11.0.4 i think. i installed from a usb. in the installation i wiped the whole drive with no partitions. i booted it while connected to the Internet and it loaded updates as it went. as far i know, everything went just as it was supposed to. the new os seems to be behaving just as it should.

however, (always a catch, right?) now, the right third of my screen appears to have thin black Phoenician blinds from top to bottom.

i can still partially see the icons in the top right corner, but not well enough to use them really, but they are active. i tried rebooting, but it didn't help.

i promised my girlfriend that this would make our dog poo machine run great and we could get more work done faster. i really hope i didn't make a mistake. the dog house gets me claustrophobic.

When I'm watching video (Either on ....., or a dvd or whatever) There are horizontal lines cutting the video, like when there's very fast movement it doesn't render the video smoothly and so I get to see like vertical divisions, I don't know how to explain it exactly. I have a driver installed, one that installed automatically when I turned normal effects on, but I don't even know which one it is, I'm very new to this.

Ubuntu :: Graphics / GUI 10.04 - Skin Flickered Black / Green A Few Times Then White Vertical Lines Started Appearing Down From The Top Of The Screen

Aug 3, 2010

I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?

Jun 20, 2011

I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.

I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.

Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

Fedora Hardware :: F12 Video Corruption - Horizontal Wavy-ness - Screen Looks Almost As If It's Underwater

Feb 27, 2010

I've just installed F12 and during boot and at the desktop, the screen has an issue. I have a 9700 pro and the resolution gets detected properly (1440x900), but it's like the frequency is slightly off. I see the screen fine, but the screen looks almost as if it's underwater. My monitor accepts two freq at 1440x900, and the issue is at the 60Hz setting. If I change it to 75Hz, the screen is fine, but the corruption is still there during boot and at the login screen. Ubuntu 8.04, 9.10 and Mint 8 all work just fine at 60Hz. This is using the default driver for my ATI card. The corruption was there in anaconda when I was installing F12, but figured it would not be there after the install. Can I somehow force 75Hz to the kernel mode set? I'll try to get a video up on ..... soon as it can describe my problem perfectly without words.

Ubuntu :: Installing New Graphics Card - Screen Went Black

Mar 30, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.

I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...

After I logged out the screen went black and I was not able to login. So I restarted my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am getting this error and it's stopping at it.

fsck from util-linux-n/g 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean, 255658/294092280 files, 5031534/117616640 blocks

*setting sensors limits
Starting GNUstep distributed object mapper: start-stop-daemon: unable to stat /usr/bin/gdomap/ (no such file or directory)
speech-dispatcher disabled: edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
*starting the winbind daemon winbind

It stops on this screen. I do not want to wipe it but I cannot get it started. I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10

Hardware :: Screen/Monitor Cannot Be Found Despite The Graphics Card Has Been?

However Suse does find that there is a HDMI port it could use. It's just not set up to have a screen attached to it.Xinerama won't work. I tried it despite the fact that it shouldn't I have tried numerous xorg.conf setting according to a number of sites that were very helpful and very thorough. I tried to modify their advice but it simply didn't work out for me.It seems like the screen is simply not acknowledged within the system for some reason. I'm running OpenSUSE 11.2 with KDE4.4, factory and my other systems pick up the screen without a hitch. My home system did the same with a HDMI connection so if anyone can point me in the right direction or even better
