Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Black Screen - No Sound - Solid HDD Light

Jun 29, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 last night, it worked fine, installed my graphics drivers, worked fine, and then I ran "sudo apt-get update" and then "sudo apt-get upgrade". There was about 240MB of packages to be downloaded, and since I was going to be on for a while, I did. I didn't restart after it finished, I just turned off my computer and went to bed.

Well now, when I turn on my computer and boot to Ubuntu, after the boot screen, my monitors stay on, but show a blank screen. There is no boot up sound, the HDD light is solid on, and I can't access terminal through Alt + Ctrl + F1.

Today brought some new updates. I did the updates and while not required I did a restart. Then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). It does not boot. I held down the power button to shutdown. When I press the power button, I get the Dell splash screen, then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Freezing - Indicator Light Stays Solid Color

Jun 11, 2010

I use ubuntu on about 3 machines, have installed it many times, and run it virtually with software and been using Ubuntu and many other distros for about 8 months now. I am still pretty much a noob and when it comes to CLI I have no clue and need it all spelled out for me. So I'll cut to the problem. My problem is that about every 10-15 minutes my netbook (Samsung N130 1.6ghz atom 2GB 800mhz RAM 160GB HDD and 128mb GMA GPU). All of my other ubuntu or any other linux distro for that matter do not have this problem I am about to explain.

So it gives me a false signal that the HDD is in use. Like an example... I'll be browsing a web page and all of a sudden it stops... I'm not running anything else or downloading anything internet is there and just stops. I can move the mouse and when I hover over objects it highlights but a click is unresponsive. And I have noticed everytime it does this it lasts about 20 seconds and the HDD indicator light stays a solid color but when I listen the HDD is it's normal sound (no ripping of data or anything).

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - BCM4311 Wireless Light Not Turning Blue (On)

May 1, 2011

I have a Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6000. I had no issues before the upgrade, but after, my wireless driver refuses to turn on the wireless at all. I've seen in most of the posts, people can see the wireless networks but not access them. I can't even get my little orange wireless (off) light to turn blue (on). The "additional drivers" option in "administration" was a bust and I've tried reinstalling the kernel from my original disk iso.

Here is my wireless info:
Code:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01)

I currently have the STA broadcom driver enabled and all I can do is use a cable for internet right now.

Ubuntu :: New NVIDIA Drivers In Lucid And Maverick Mess Up Splash - Black Screen

Oct 5, 2010

The new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...

Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.

Fedora Installation :: Updating To 10 From 8 - Start Anaconda The Screen Remain Black

Apr 3, 2009

I've some problems upgrading to version 10 from version 8. My workstation is certified by RedHat. It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':

# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade

It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... Debian :: Cannot Change Back To Basic Blue Grub Boot Splash?

Dec 17, 2010

I get the new boot splash with the nice little rocket and all but I seriously dislike it. While I don't stare at my computer as it boots, I do happen to see it from time to time. Unfortunately, I always see this new little rocket and I wonder where my traditional Debian blue with the swirl went. Yes, I know I am using Grub-Pc now, and I have tried to edit my /etc/grub.d file by renaming the wallpaper line to my preference.

But all my config file sees is "background-grub.png" which is the little rocket ship. So, I give. What is the secret code to unlock my grub config file or do I seriously have to muck around with Plymouth in order to have a choice in the matter? Just for those of you who contemplate counseling me on better time management instead of wasting my precious time over such a silly little thing, I agree. Not to mention that I use Debian because I like to build my system.

Fedora :: Get The Abrt Flashing Light At The Top Of The Screen?

Jan 27, 2010

Every time I login I get the abrt flashing light at the top of the screen, but nothing comes up. When I try to run it manually from Applications->System Tools->Automatic Bug Reporting Tool I get a popup with:

Quote:

Error while loading the dumplist. org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)Is anybody else seeing this? If so, any idea as to what's going on? How to fix it?

I could just dump abrt since it's hardly a necessity, but I'm inclined not to as I think it's a good idea which could potentially be of great benefit to us all.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen On Start?

Oct 17, 2010

what it is, is I installed Maverick fresh (not an upgrade) and it now will go to were it says ubuntu, and has the loading dots, and it stays at a black screen after that. The 'thinking' light for my computer is not activationg. it is installed on a 20-30 Gb partition, on a dual boot with windows 7. I had had Lucid installed a while ago, but it was lost when my harddrive was wiped a while back. My specs:

Computer: Lenovo g555
CPU Type: AMD Athlon II Dual-Core
CPU Speed: M320(2.1GHz)
CPU L2 Cache: 1MB

Ubuntu :: Black Screen On Start Up?

May 15, 2011

To start this is on my mom's laptop which is a Gateway NV78.

It was running fine with Ubuntu 10.10 but I like to do a clean install of the latest version when it comes out and I am home. I torrent the 11.04 desktop 64 bit releaee and strangely the screen is just black but it appears to load. Then I try to the 64 bit alternate install which appears to work fine. Unfortunately, the screen is black when loading past GRUB and plays the Ubuntu sound. To test if it is loading I type in my password and hit enter and the Ubuntu log in sound plays but still nothing on the screen.

I thought no big deal I will just install 10.04.2 and use the alternate download. I download it on the desktop running Windows 7 and use the USB installer the Ubuntu website recommends. It installs fine but the same problem occurs with a black screen.

At this point I think to reinstall again but this appears at the top of the screen.

SYSLINUX 3.86 20-04-01 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al

The screen is just stuck there with a blinking cursor and if press any keys it beeps several times.

TL;DR Installed 11.04 then black screen. Installed 10.04.2 then black screen. Install 10.04.02 again and error message.

Ubuntu :: Reset All Personalization Such As Splash Screen And Colors In Grub Splash To Default?

Apr 25, 2010

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.
