I have Windows 7 and Slackware on my laptop, but I reinstall Windows 7 and now I cannot enter at Slackware ( I don't have anymore start screen to choose OS). Do I need to install again Slackware or just lilo and how to do that?
View 12 RepliesI used btrfs, but my Slackware root is really a subvolume named system and not the root of btrfs. I do a similar setup of having the OS's root in it's own filesystem on FreeBSD+ZFS.Anyways, my problem lies in mkinitrd. There's no way to enter extra boot options, as I require subvol=system to be added to mount -o ro -t $ROOTFS $ROOTDEV /mnt.in the init script of /boot/initrd.gz. I don't reboot often and it's easy to manually remount /mnt with the correct options, however, is there another way of passing boot options to mkinitrd?
I see Patrick is the author of mkinitrd, so maybe this kind of option could, or maybe should, be added? I'm sure most people wouldn't make a subvolume for the OS's root, but I've been use to it with ZFS and prefer it for some reason.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I can recreate widgets and panels but not as the default menu bar at the bottom of the screen. So, now everytime I push something in the background, I have no way to recover it. Problem - this computer has no cd and won't boot from a USB stick when the hard drive is connected (go figure...disconnect hard drive, it boots from usb stick) no matter how I set the bios.
I have a copy of the Slack DVD copied to the local hard drive. I can configure lilo to boot from ubnkern on the slack dvd file set, but that just boots debian using that particular kernel - surprisingly it boots, but is not how to get to slack setup. Given the above setup and restrictions, how would I go about getting to slack setup? I'm kinda stuck here, trying to figure out what to do next.

I have added dependency after dependency... and now I am finally stuck. View 8 Replies View RelatedI made a full install of Slackware and have been using one of my boxes as an Apache web server. I recently tried to install Joomla, the PHP CMS software, and when I ran the pre-install requisite checker (The second step of the installation), the installer notified me that I do not have MySQL support. I find this especially strange as I've made webpages using PHP that made use of MySQL databases.
My pre-post research has lead me to several other people with the same problem. Half were using windows, and just had not uncommented the "extension mysql.so" line in the php.ini file. The other half solved their problem by installing their distro's php-mysql module. According to what I'd read, you can still use MySQL if you don't have that module installed, but Joomla does need it to be able to use the MySQL database.
I've searched long and hard for this plugin/add-on/module for Slackware, but to no avail. It's available in RPM format, and I know that it's possible to use rpm2tgz to convert these files, but I don't know exactly what the issue is, and if Slackware may be different. I don't want to install that and then find out that it overwrote something that I'd needed.

I want: dual boot up choosing between ubuntu and Windows 7 at start-up, "my files" (presumably equivalent to ~/home) to be available to both windows and ubuntu and to be "separate" for no "second guessing" back-up AND no problem ubuntu (and windows I suppose) upgrades.
After trying without success change from windows to ubuntu (dual-boot unsolved problems), I decided to try slack as I have seen that user to user support for slack is usually best oriented and faster.But I am having some problems in order to install slack because of GPT support. At first I tried just to boot from DVD and went through the install using the help inside the disk. It doesn't work because either fdisk and cfdisk that are suggested in help doesn't offer support to GPT.

But also it suggest the use of fdisk. However, it suggested too that I could use another partition application and since I have the live cd for ubuntu, I tried to partition from there and use those partitions for installation.
At first I tried to format as ext4, but i discovered that slack still dont offer support to this format (at least the version that I downloaded).So I tried again but this time using ext3 as format to my / and /home and use the swap offered in the application for use as swap (duh!)But every time I try to install using the dvd it doesnt find my partitions with fdisk, only with the parted command I can see my partition table displayed correctly.However, every time I try to run setup it say that it didnt found and linux partition (swap also when i try to target).So this is my dilemma, I cant use fdisk, in the parted manual (url) it only says that it supports ext2 (not mention ext3) and also i dont find any command to use with parted to mark the partition as 82.I ran through this 2 other posts (url), but as I am still waiting for some update there I decided to ask it here hoping to discover that this is an easy problem.
I'm familiar with editing Grub's "menu.lst" file to add additional OS's to the boot list. Does Slackwares Lilo have a similar config file ? I need to add a second physical drive with Windows 7 on it to the boot options in Lilo. If it's not a config file, how do I add a second os to it ? Slack and Windows are both already installed on two different physical drives so I won't be installing, I just need to add the Windows drive to Lilo.

The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.
Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.
Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.
I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)
Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.
I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.

However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:

I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?
I bought a new laptop in which a Linux Suse Enterprise Desktop is installed,After that, I installed Windows 7 by the common method: Using Gparted CD, but the problem is that after the end of the installing of Windows 7, the latter became as the first only OS installed in, and the grub of Linux Suse has been disabled , and the only way to enable the grab (in order to use dual-boot, switch between Suse and Win7) is to use the Linux Suse CD and enter to it for enter some prompt command (as u know), but I didn't get the CD with the attached pack, I got instead of it, a System Recovery CD, the only option shown in the first page is to restore the system and not to enter it

I use Suse Linux 11.1 on a VMware Workstation 6.5.3, and I've run into the following strange behavior: occasionally (happened two-three times in the last several days), I get instead of the usual boot options screen, which is of green color, a screen with the same content but which is predominantly blue; in fact it contains a sort of snowscape with a penguin walking across it. So far I haven't noticed anything wrong with my machine; but I'm curious if anybody else has noticed it. Could it be some malware
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Slackware 13.1 a little bit ago, played around with it, performed an upgrade with Slackpkg, messed around with some settings, and chose a new theme. I had set the runlevel to 4 and when I rebooted after choosing a new login theme the screen just went black at the point where the login prompt should have appeared. I couldn't even get into the CLI. Using a LiveCD, I set the run level to 3 again and was able to log in, but when I try to start X the screen goes black and freezes again, so I believe my new login theme is the culprit. Is there a way to change to the default login theme from the CLI?

I installed a slack 13.7 on an old laptop. KDE was set as default desktop. then I login and run startx and I saw KDE first screen display. after that I saw blank screen with a mouse on it. Then it stayed there and it seems try read some in my harddisk since the persistent harddisk light.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.
Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.
EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.
I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:

It seems to be that the camera is recognized by the OS but it is not working when I try to use it in skype or in EVO.
Has anyone here succeeded in getting armed slack running on a consumer kirkwood device .ie. one without serial console? I have a tonido plug that I want to liberate. By default the plug boots first from the external usb, so I would only need to set up / on the first partition. I would be very interested to know if someone had managed to install slack to the internal nand without bricking it.
