Installation :: Boot Vista, XP, And Then Installing With Grub?
Apr 27, 2009I will be booting Vista, XP, and then installing Linux with grub. So the Vista boot loader will be setup to boot both Windows, so then when I do install a Linux on the same hard drive, (all on separate partitions) what is the best method to boot up all 3 systems?Should I just allow grub to install on the master boot record, and then chainload XP and Vista. Or I could install grub on the boot sector of what will be my Kubuntu root partition, and then try to add this Linux to the Vista boot loader ?

Jul 6, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu Studio on my PC, dual-booting it with Vista. Once the installation had finished, and I had rebooted, Grub showed the two Vista options:
Windows Vista (loader)
Windows Recovery Environment (loader)
When I load up "Windows Vista (loader)" it opens my Acer eRecovery Management, but when I load "Windows Recovery Environment (loader)" it opens what looks like a normal version of Vista. Is it possible that on installation, Grub accidentally swapped the two around, or have I probably mucked up my computer?

The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

Mar 7, 2009I am new to Fedora, having used Ubuntu for 2 years. However, I am a little dissappointed in the latest Ubuntu releases and want to try something new. So I installed Fedora 10 on my second hard drive, deleting Ubuntu. On my first hard drive, I have Vista installed. During installation I followed a guide for dual-booting and it said not to install Grub to the MBR of the Windows partition, so I followed that advice...
This caused a Grub error 15 on the next boot. I booted the Fedora installation from the second hard drive. My hypothesis is that the Grub bootloader of Ubuntu was still installed somewhere and it could not find the Ubuntu linux kernel. Therefore, it gave error 15. So I installed Vista again and am hesitant to try Fedora again... How can I install Fedora alongside Vista properly (as dual boot)?
Or should I stay away, because it is apparently too difficult for me? Is it worthwhile to make a separate /home partition as I read that it is preferred to do a clean install every release? Could I just do that with Gparted and then assign the partition as /home in the Anaconda installer? The downside is that I then need to create a swap and / partition too, right?

In the grub loader, I cannot see my Vista boot record.
I thought when installing, I choose 'use free space', as there I reservered 7 gigabyte for Fedora.
I can see all the files including my Windows directories and home.
Is there a possibility that I can recover my Vista? and so, make it dual boot?

Sep 1, 2010I had two OS in laptop windows vista and linux mint and when I used to start my computer I used to get different option for os like linux mint, linux mint memory check, windows vista etc.. but because of virus windows vista got crashed so I formatted disk drive C: which were containing windows vista and reinstalled fresh copy of vista.. but now when I start my computer vista start automatically, I do not see GRUB options to run windows os or linux mint..Is there a way to reinstall GRUB to get options like I used to get before formatting ?

The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Jun 9, 2009So I had Windows Vista installed on my laptop(two 250gb HD). After trying to install fedora 10 with the Live CD, with some errors about root and boot, I ( don't really know why) tried the resize option and changed the second HD to 2 partitions. Put boot on the first. The installation was sucessful, i rebooted, but nothing happened. No windows vista, no fedora. So I tried to change by custom installing(installed fedora on first HD) and I guess I messed up a little. I want to boot again into Vista, but even editing grub menus failed. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Dec 20, 2009I have windows and I installed fedora 12 on a separate partition.
However, I had a problem with my windows XP SP 3 and had to install windows. Which I did on my C drive. However, when I re-boot I on longer get the GRUB loader displayed so cannot boot into fedora.
Is there anything I can do?

Installation :: Vista Recovery With Grub Loader?
Mar 8, 2009I have a laptop which was originally running Windows Vista, I attempted to install Windows XP on via USB since the laptop couldn't boot the install disk (this has turned out to be a bad disk drive. This fell flat on its back and wouldn't even finish the install (although not before formating the Vista install in to oblivion). Although I was extremely careful to leave the Vista recovery intact. So I managed to get Ubuntu 8.10 (XFCE if that makes any difference) installed over USB. I was wondering, Could I use the GRUB louder to boot into the recovery drive? Laptop is a Toshiba Equium L350D

Feb 27, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says:

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error When There Is Only One Partition Of Vista On The Computer.
Jan 16, 2011I am running vista 64x and i partitioned unbuntu 10.10 on my computer.
I deleted the ubuntu partitioned from my computer through Vista and made it all one drive. SO now all my computer has i the recovery partition which is 9.61GB and the main Vista partition that is 287.65GB. That is ALL.
I restarted my computer and it gives me the following error:

Now, i have a GParted disk to manage my paritions because i have had this problem before. However when i put it in the computer it only shows my 2 partitions. (The recovery one and the vista one) Both of them are "unmounted"
How do i disable grub from loading through something like GParted that is boot loaded off a disk at system startup? I only have vista on this computer, but i cant get to it because GRUB is in the way. (I do not know if its grub1 or grub 2, but its ubuntu 10.10)
I DO NOT have a recovery disk for my vista computer, ive lost it, however i have the Windows 7 Upgrade disk, but that will not load from the disk when i turn on the computer.
Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck Installing 9.04 With Vista And Three Hard Drives
Jun 1, 2010My smallest disc has the Vista loader and nothing else but I cannot select it for Dual Booting in the Ubuntu installation set up only for use as an entire disc which would delete the Vista Loader.
This is what I have:-
1st disc - no operating system much data
2nd Disc - empty except for Windows loader
3rd Disc - no operating system much stuff.
My original plan was to give Ubuntu all of the smaller second disc and I deleted everything ready to give it the entire hard disc. It was only when I went to install Ubuntu it I found the Vista loader lurking on disc 2 and the only option the install Ubuntu set up gave me for disc 2 was to use the entire disc (wiping out Vista loader) otherwise I could have installed Ubunbtu on another disc - which it reported as having no operating system.
If I put Ubuntu on disc 1 would I have a dual boot arrangement given that the installer saw no operating system on that disc ? Is there any (simple) way I can install Ubuntu on disc 2 and not loose the Vista loader? I am installing this version of Ubuntu as it was on the DVD that came with book "Beginning Ubntu Linux" It took me long time to Psych myself up to install it and when I did . . .
Fedora :: Delete GRUB And Boot Straight Into Vista?
Mar 29, 2010I was dual-booting Vista Business and Fedora 12 on the same hard drive. I deleted the Fedora partition and expanded the Vista partition to use this space.
I figured that because GRUB was on the Fedora partition (at least, I thought it was), I'd just be able to load up Vista as usual.
When I turn the computer on, a GRUB command-line comes up, and to be completely honest, I have absolutely no idea what to do at this point. I'd quite like to just get rid of GRUB entirely and boot straight into Vista, but again, I don't know how.
I've tried using a Vista recovery disc to sort out startup problems, but it doesn't do anything because the problem occurs before control is passed over to Vista.
What can I do to fix this problem? Can I get delete GRUB and boot straight into Vista? How?
