After installing Fedora 12 from a live CD, I ended up that my Vista completly gone is.
In the grub loader, I cannot see my Vista boot record.
I thought when installing, I choose 'use free space', as there I reservered 7 gigabyte for Fedora.
I can see all the files including my Windows directories and home.
Is there a possibility that I can recover my Vista? and so, make it dual boot?
So I had Windows Vista installed on my laptop(two 250gb HD). After trying to install fedora 10 with the Live CD, with some errors about root and boot, I ( don't really know why) tried the resize option and changed the second HD to 2 partitions. Put boot on the first. The installation was sucessful, i rebooted, but nothing happened. No windows vista, no fedora. So I tried to change by custom installing(installed fedora on first HD) and I guess I messed up a little. I want to boot again into Vista, but even editing grub menus failed. Any ideas on how to solve this?

I am happy with ubuntu it's cool, but I want to go back to windows. I lost my windows cd. So I made a blank disc with an iso file. But the problem is. When I try to keep it inside my computer and restart it won't load. I think grub has something to do with this.

The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I have a dell and vista was installed on it, then i installed fedora 10 like it said on the fedora site from a boot disc. Now i have fedora but i don't have vista nor access to the memory it took up. I tried to restore to start over but i can't, and i need vista back.
Normally i would restore from the 10 G partition dell sets up for recovery but i'm not able to get to it, and i don't have my vista discs they're back at school.

1. How could i cleanly uninstall Vista from my system? (I Used WUBI to install Ubuntu)

I have a harddisk which is partiotioned in C & D. I've installed WIN XP on C and WIN 7 on D. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on D beside WIN 7. Now I can't access to WIN 7 and also to drive D in XIN XP and in Ubuntu.
What can I do to get back WIN 7 and drive D ?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

When I choose the reserved partition to install. It shows "windows are unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation". I read a some installation guides and was told that dual-booting will allow me use both OS without problems.Last night, I created three partitions on the hard disk, one of them is the primary partition for my Vista OS. Then I went ahead to install Fedora on one of the other partitions. The Fedora worked fine. Subsequently, I wanted to check some stuffs using Vista, but the computer showed my some prompt that said that my BOOTMGR is missing. 1. Re-sized Vista Partition to 650 Gb(using utility that came with installation), got 50 Gb free space
2. Installed Fedora on Free space
Decided to boot back to Windows(to check if it was left intact) , Windows boots into Recovery mode. It can't find the partition !
Fedora boots up fine. When my PC starts, it give me message that I have 3-5 seconds to choose what system to boot. Disk Utility shows that my HD is split into multiple partitions.
Really need to get back my Windows Partition. All my work is on it.
I'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

Now i want to uninstall the windows. How can i do this the best way that the result is that the existing Fedora stays and boots on computerstart and that i can use the HDD where windows was on the fedora system to store stuff (now the fedora system cant see the windows hdd becouse its NTFS)
I had a fresh copy of Windows Vista installed (original from the factory)- and I followed a document of dual booting - however I think I did some mistake or automatic skip of install Grub boot loader-
Now my fedora 11 is running smoothly but windows vista is gone or does not boot - I don't have any boot disks- they give examples having floppy disk a boot disk- my laptop doesn't have floppy drive- I guess I could manage in cd or flash drive.

I noticed that the partition NTFS still exists and it has not been erased. I did install linux on hda5 since hda1 was partitioned with NTFS
Is there any manual and precaution to be taken while doing the same dual boot system ?
Or is it possible to have dual boot with the present config- although i am ready to install fresh window vista and fedora as my dual booting systems...
i need to backup my Vista Home Premium entirely, including the OS itself, just in case i screw my whole hard drive up during this process, and i need to reinstall vista and my data. I have a 1tb external Hard Drive with a ~700gb FAT32 empty partition on it (i can re-format this if necessary), I need to be able to backup my operating system entirely to this. Example of why i wish to back this up: Let's say im installing ubuntu, and i accidentally install it over my vista partition, now i have no vista in my machine whatsoever, i want to be able to use this backup i have created to reinstall vista onto the hard drive.

Then I went back to Ubuntu but now I have decided to stick with Fedora. The first time I installed Fedora it gave me options for choosing default OS and other things, now I can't remember how I did that and can't figure out how to do that agian. How do I do that agian? I downloaded and installed Ubunutu 10.04, using the first install option to have it install next to Windows, and afterwards on startup I get 6 options: Whenever I try to boot with either of the Windows options, it goes to the Windows loading bar, then the screen goes black and the computer resets. I didn't make recovery disks. I already had Vista recovery disks and I did try that, but it said I wouldn't be able to restore the system with them. F11 on startup splashscreen does nothing.

How shoudl I proceed? Which OS to install first? I believe (from reading the threads) that I should install windows vista first and Fedora second.
The main question I have is this. I heard that HDD makers will no longer ship the current HDD's in Jan. Heard that 512 byte hard drive format is to be replaced by 4KB. I read somewhere that this can cause issues when we go for dual boot. Is this true? In that case, what steps can I take to ensure no problems occur?

I dont see any firewall protection in Linux. I have heard of using IPTables, but then how efefctive are those? I will be doing many online transactions and I want my system to be secure. I know Linux is pretty secure. So should I harden the security with a hardware firewall?
I will be watching a lot of DVD movies, AVI movies and some HD movies as well. Does linux have issues rendering HD movies properly? I have read somewhere that fedora has issues while Win is good and Debian/CentOS (Not sure which one was mentioned) is even better. I had a pretty powerful config in teh past and yet I have seen that my Vista machine had trouble rendering a HD movie properly.

I had two OS in laptop windows vista and linux mint and when I used to start my computer I used to get different option for os like linux mint, linux mint memory check, windows vista etc.. but because of virus windows vista got crashed so I formatted disk drive C: which were containing windows vista and reinstalled fresh copy of vista.. but now when I start my computer vista start automatically, I do not see GRUB options to run windows os or linux mint..Is there a way to reinstall GRUB to get options like I used to get before formatting ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a two Hard disk one of which is 160GB & other is 500GB. In 160GB HD I had installed fedora 13 & in 500GB Windows 7. There was my unluck that the whole of partion of 500GB were convered into dynamic disk so that i was unable to access other partion of 500GB HD. i searched for that but ultimately i was unsuccessful. Now I decide to format the C: drive (of 500GB HD).C: drive was 80GB size and there was a system information partition of 100MB created on windows seven installation.Now on installation of fedora 14 in 500GB (at partition 80GB + 100MB) i am unble to access other D: & e: drive. In Disk utility of fedora it is showing 414GB free.
