I Dual-Booted (if im not mistaken is the term for installing two OS) Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows Vista. Using Ubuntu 9.10 as my primary OS and using Vista for some programming ( college stuffs ) Only a moment ago, i reformat/recovered my Vista and only i found out that, my GRUB loader has gone. I'm asking is there any way for me to install a GRUB loader using Vista?
View 7 RepliesI have a laptop which was originally running Windows Vista, I attempted to install Windows XP on via USB since the laptop couldn't boot the install disk (this has turned out to be a bad disk drive. This fell flat on its back and wouldn't even finish the install (although not before formating the Vista install in to oblivion). Although I was extremely careful to leave the Vista recovery intact. So I managed to get Ubuntu 8.10 (XFCE if that makes any difference) installed over USB. I was wondering, Could I use the GRUB louder to boot into the recovery drive? Laptop is a Toshiba Equium L350D
View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to dualboot my HP laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. The problem is that the harddrive had 4 primary partitions. So i had to delete the Recovery and HP TOOLS partions. I did that after creating my system recovry CDS. The "install alongside another operating system" option showed up. And i was really happy for about 1 minute until i discovered that it said Windows Vista loader! So now i have this:
sda 640GB harddrive
sda1 Windows 7 loader
sda2 Windows Vista loader
And when im trying to install a dualboot the Windows 7 loader dosent show up! It wants to install Vista loader but i dont have that operating system. I have read that 7 and Vista sometimes gets mixed up in GRUB can this be the case here? Is it safe for me to install Vista loader with Ubuntu 10.10?
On my notebook there was a preinstalled OEM Windows 7 Home Basic (disk C, sda1). I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on disk D, and was not using Windows 7 any more, although the "seventh" was present n main loading menu and in grub menu. 2 days ago I discovered, that in grub menu appeared "Windows Vista (Loader) - sda1" ! I didn't install it, and I'm sure that nobody else had access to my notebook. "Windows 7 (Loader)" now links to sda2.
When I try to run this strange "Windows Vista (Loader)", appears the Windows loading screen, than the empty Windows desktop background, and than the system reboots. How can Windows Vista (Loader) appear in grub, if nobody installed it? Can it be an imitation of Vista loader, made by some malware? How to remove this item from grub?
I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed.It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
install fedora 11 on Vista I want to keep the windows boot loader and also install on a usb drive or a seperate partition that has 10GB free "install doesn't see partition's". Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. I'm trying to install now but install does'nt give me any option to select partitions from my drives one 320GB "portable, 3 partitions" and 80GB "main os 2 partitions one partition has 10GB free"
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem installing Ubuntu Studio 9.10-alternate-amd64 onto my machine. This is the third attempt and I keep running into the same problem. Grub Boot Loader will only install to 16% when a screen pops up:
Ubuntu Installer Main Menu
Choose the next step in the install process:
choose language
configure the keyboard
detect and mount CD-rom
etc...
choosing the option "Install Grub boot loader on a hard disk" sends me back to the Grub install and once again at 16% the Ubuntu Installer Main Menu pops up. Choosing the option "Install the Lilo Boot Loader on a hard disk" resolves in an Lilo-install failure and i'm directed back to the Installer Main Menu. The option "Finish the installation" sends me back to the same menu..I'm stumped as to what to do... a disk check ensured me that the instal-dvd is valid though I can't get past this silly install menu.
I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg
So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)
I've just came across something rather strange. I've been having a problem with GRUB 2 and Windows as highlighted in this thread:[URL].. Often when I attempt to access my Windows partition from GRUB I will get the Windows failed to start error, but today I may have found something rather interesting that may help me solve my problem. Sorry if it looks like im double posting, but im asking something different.
Basically when Windows fails to boot it restarts and when I attempt to boot it again I usually get the Windows failed to start screen with the option to run Startup and Repair when I ran it earlier, I suddenly saw the Windows Vista Loading bar, which is rather impossible as im running Windows 7. But my laptop came pre-loaded with Windows Vista as well as a recovery partition with Windows Vista on it. I thought I'd removed them both completely but now seeing the Windows Vista Loading screen says otherwise. It looks like some part of the Vista loader remains and well could be the cause of my boot issues. So im wondering how can I go about fully removing the Windows Vista Boot loader?
I have just installed ubuntu with a USB key, I have Vista installed in drive C: and I created a partition (L: ) and installed Linux root (/ ) in that one.When there was the screen where I could choose the boot loader i left the default option instead of choosing Windows Vista Loaderand now I can't boot Vista anymore.
In grub i see a windows vista option, but that option brings me to a recovery partition and not to the real operative system. I know that vista is not broken because when I used wubi I was able to boot from the vista bootloader without any problems, but I never could boot vista from grub because it brought me to that recovery partition.I can access all my files on the disk from ubuntu, but I would like to be able to restore the vista boot loader and use again windows when I need it.Is there a way to restore vista's boot loader? I tried to do automatic startup repair from the vista recovery cd but it says that no problem could be found.
I have had a strange experience in upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1545 also running Vista. I was upgrading from a Ubuntu 8.04 that I thought would be worth reporting/sharing in case others have had a similar experience. last week I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 using the live cd. Everything seems have gone smoothly. I could log in and out of ubuntu. After logging into Vista and logging out, the next time I tried to start the machine, there was a 'segment offset error' with the boot loader and there was no way of rebooting into anything except to use the Ubuntu live CD and go to a terminal and reinstall the bootloader. The same thing happened after logging in to Vista- this seemed to mess with the boot loader. Logging in first time was not a problem.
Yesterday I started again, wiped out 10.10 and re-installed ubuntu but version 10.04. Logging in and out of Vista is so far ok and I have not had any problems. I do not have an obvious logical explanation to the sequence of events unless there is a problem with the boot loader in version 10.10.
I was installing sqeeze i386 on my laptop VOSTRO 1400 and got this the 'grub-pc' package failed to install into /target/. without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot.

1)Do I need to install the GRUB boot loader on this new partition?
2)Can I use the same swap space or is recommended to create a new swap?
Trying to install 11.04 64bit Server onto my machine.
First try from USB stick failed because the installer couldn't continue without a CDROM present. fine, whatever, dust off the old CD drive and install from it.
Second and subsequent tries have failed because the installer gets to the point of installing the GRUB bootloader to the hard drive and fails. I cannot install it to any of the drives in the system, nor will it boot when using the 'boot from first harddrive' option while booting from the CD drive.
I got an HP ProBook 4520s that comes with 500 GB with Windows 7.
It comes with 4 partitions: SYSTEM, the main Windows partition, HP Recovery and HT Tools.
I tried to have OpenSuse installation to resize the Windows larger partition but it said that it couldn't with this message:
"The partition on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool."
So I resized the Windows partition from Windows 7 and added 3 partitions on the empty space for Linux: /, swap and /home. Still OpenSuSE installation has shown this warning message:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24 (result is error 18 during grub MBR)."
I configured OpenSuSE installation to install on those partitions but Grub could not install the boot loader with this message: "grub> setup --stage=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,2) (hd0,2)
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit"
I already tried this in OpenSuSE 11.4 but I suspected it needed newer parted and grub versions, so I also tried OpenSuSE 12.1 milestone 3 with the same results.
The installation finishes but no Grub boot menu appears, it goes to Windows as if no Linux was installed, although the installed version is there in the 3 partitions that were created on Windows, I just cannot make them boot.
I have always been a Redhat user, and ESXi User. I decided to try ubuntu because of it's strong recommendations as a file server. I have tried several fixes listed in the forums with no luck. I tried the live CD and I have no issues there. I tried gparted, and it sees all my drives. Seeing that most ask for the boot info script to be run, i was proactive. I know its a boot issue with were grub is pointing too. However, that is where I get stuck. I am not an expert at using grub. In a Nut shell, I had no issues installing. I choose the Jmicron 150G Raid 1 drive. Used full drive space with LVM. When it came to reboot I did, and it just sits after it does the boot from cdrom. I hate to go back to windows 7 for a file server/web server. Oh Windows was installed at one point, I think that is where the script sees the GPT partitions.

I'm using the RAID1 setup, which is configured in the BIOS, as it is a HP Proliant server. i have 2 500GB hard drives configured in a mirror. when booting the install, it recognises this, and deals with it fine.
The problem is, when it gets to the section of installing the grub2 boot loader, it just stops and gives me the "ubuntu installer main menu" where if i select grub boot loader install it just loops back, and if i select LILO installer, it errors, saying an installation step failed.
It has the option to skip installing boot loader, but then, can i get it to boot a different way? can i boot manually into the server install and then install GRUB and hope it works? can i install grub1 rather than grub2?

I found no solution to the earlier GRUB mod. So I'm tryin' now to import the PCLOS loader into the Ubuntu GRUB (with XPPro), but alas, no success thus far.
PCLOS disk is now mapping as hd2. From GRUB cli, I did find /boot/grub/menu.lst. It returned 3 entries: (hd0,0[Ubuntu]), (hd2,0), and (hd2,6).
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Minimal on a 2GB USB using CLI and it is working very well after I added a few things. I intend to use it on machines other than my own. But the GRUB boot loader was installed to the main system on my machine and it is booting from there.
During the installation it was said that the bootloader can be installed on a floppy. So I started a new 2 GB stick and tried to install the boot loader on a floppy but my computer does not recognize floppies anymore (seems to be a wider problem with recent distributions).
So I tried to install the bootloader on a different USB stick and and this also did not work. Cannot find recent and relatively easy way to install GRUB boot loader to a stick.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 64-Bit via Wubi but it seems that when I turn on my machine I first get the Windows Boot Loader, when I select Ubuntu from the list it then goes into GRUB with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. Is there any way to change this so only GRUB is used?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 OS installed as my main OS, it installed on its own HDD with 3 other data storage drives.
On my 5th drive I installed a copy of OpenSUSE 11.02 to see if I like it. I have decided I don't wish to keep it so I reformatted the drive while in Win7. Of course on restart I got the Grub 1.5 Error 22. All my HDD's are seperate and there are no partitions.
I have had to reinstall OpenSUSE just to get my PC to boot.
All I want to is remove OpenSUSE from my computer without losing my Win 7 install.
My Win 7 install disc fails to recognise my Win 7 so I can not get the recovery command prompt/repair options.
Can someone explain in say 5 simple steps to get back my original MBR so I can boot straight to Windows as I can't seem to find a guide that actually explains what to do. Either by doing it in OpenSUSE 11.02 or Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
I am running Windows 7 and openSuse 11.3 as a dual-boot system. I had to run a Windows 7 Startup Repair, which apparently reset the Windows boot loader, so now I am not getting Grub. How do I reinstall or reactivate the Grub boot loader? I am assuming I have to use the installation DVD?

After i installed ubuntu whenever i boot up my computer i have to have my external hdd plugged in and turned on or else i get "cannot find GRUB" then some rescue thing comes up where i can type stuff. i would just like to move the GRUB loader to my primary hard drive or at least recover my windows loader but have ubuntu on it.
