Fedora Installation :: No GRUB After Re-installing Windows / Get That?

Dec 20, 2009

I have windows and I installed fedora 12 on a separate partition.

However, I had a problem with my windows XP SP 3 and had to install windows. Which I did on my C drive. However, when I re-boot I on longer get the GRUB loader displayed so cannot boot into fedora.

Is there anything I can do?

Ubuntu Installation :: Restoring Grub Failed After Installing Windows XP?

May 21, 2010

I am pretty new to ubuntu, and not sure if this question has been solved by anyone, I tried search this forum, but didn't find enough information. The closest thread I found here was this one:[URL].. Here is my situation, I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 a few days ago with an old Live CD, after running it pretty well, I upgraded it to 9.10 with the online update tool. (I guess this makes sure I was using Grub 1, the legacy Grub). After updated to 9.10, I installed a Windows XP on my hard drive, obviously, it wiped off my Grub from the MBR. So I tried to restore the Grub back to the MBR, but failed, please see below:I first run the fdisk

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes

Software :: Replace Windows Boot Loader On Sda1 With Grub When Installing Fedora?

May 28, 2010

I recently replaced a failed graphics card w/ a GT 240. Next thing I know, Fedora 11 won't boot up properly. I guess it was a driver issue. I can tell you I went about fixing it all wrong because I wiped the FC11 partition (intending to install FC13) and now I can't boot anything up. My system consists of: sda1 vista, sdb1 XP, sdb5 extended, sdb6 Fedora. I thought grub was on the fedora partition, but reinstalling fedora with grub on that partition didn't fix the boot up problem. Do I need to replace the windows boot loader on sda1 with grub when installing fedora?

since FC1 i install Fedora on a seperate HD on my PC without installing GRUB. I always made a bootdisk and since FC4 a boot CD with mkbootdisk. If i try to make a bootdisk via mkbootdisk --iso --device/tmp/bootdisk.$(uname -r).iso $(uname -r) under Fedora 12 i get a kernel panic if i try to start from this disc:Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)PID: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 #1Call Trace: then there a some hex values and the message that i should choose a proper root partition. if i start with options linux root=correct_bootpartition i get the same kernel panic with the same message.I found out that it must have something to do with the kernel*.img file. Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

Jul 23, 2011

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...

I have installed Windows 7 64-bit, Fedora 13 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit. I had to install the 32-bit XP for some driver issues I have with obscure devices I own. Windows 7 and Fedora both boot with no issues but Windows XP is not the in the GRUB loader as it was installed after Fedora. I have tried adding a few entries to the menu.lst file but my attempts failed. The output of fdisk -l is here

Fedora Installation :: Grub Can't Find Windows

Aug 12, 2010

I have a problem that has been vexing me for a week now. I installed Windows XP Media first and then Fedora 12. I did the instalation as simple as I could and let the disk do the work. After installation I rebooted but the windows is not part of the boot up. When I hit the "other" selection a blinking curser shows up and that's it. Now I did goto the Gedit conf. and changed "other" to "Windows" and increased the boot up sec. (hd0,0) is suppose to be for Windows, but no results, (hd2,0) is for Fedora and (hd1,0) is the restore file for Windows. I have tried to see the fdisk, the dev/ directory but don't have a clue how to get there from the terminal.

Fedora Installation :: Cant Boot Into Windows Xp After Installing 15?

Aug 6, 2011

I'm not able to boot into windows XP after having upgraded to Fedora 15 (from a linux magazine DVD). I just get a perennial flashing cursor with black screen. I have tried leaving it like this for a few minutes to see if anything is happening in the background, but to no avail. There were no issues at all with Fedora 14.The grub.conf file appears to have been modified only to pre-pend the fedora 15 boot option. I have changed nothing else in grub.conf or (windows for that matter). All the Fedora boot options work correctly.I have update everything using yum update.Having read a few posts I am still none the wiser. I append the grub.conf and the output of "fdisk -l". What is Fedora 15 version of grub doing differently, and what has it modified that disables the windows part of the bootloader?

Fedora Installation :: Configuring Grub To Work With MS Windows 7 And XP?

Mar 18, 2010

I didn't get any responses to my question yesterday about grub with multiple disks

By "best," I don't mean with the most technical detail about each and every option. Instead, I'm looking for a guide that provides a step-by-step instructions about how to do some of the more common tasks, e.g.: configuring grub to work with MS Windows 7 and XP how to reinstall the MBR with grub after MS Windows' install program overwrites the MBR reinstalling the MBR from Fedora's LiveCD (without going through the whole install process) because I can't boot to my hard drive. configuring grub to work with multiple OS on separate hard drives

Again, I'm looking for a guide that starts with the basics about how to create a configuration file and write it to the MBR.

Fedora Installation :: Windows Not Booting After Installing 2nd Distro?

Apr 18, 2009

I had setup my system for triple boot with Windows, F10 & Suse. I had the Windows partition and then installed F10 setting up Grub to load the other two. All went fine and was able to choose to boot to Windows which worked. I then installed Suse, choosing the bootloader to be on the partition for Suse. This installed fine and can now choose to boot into Suse which works. F10 still works as expected, but when I choose to boot Windows, I just end up with a Grub command line. I can't see how the Windows partition could have been affected. I can still see all the files in there, but it just wont boot.

[Code]...

This is not really a Linux issue but does anyone know how I can 'repair' this Windows partition without affecting any other partitions. I don't have a Windows install CD. If I boot off FreeDOS, is there a command to repair the 'bootability' of the Windows partition only?

Ubuntu :: Uninstall And GRUB By Installing Windows 7?

Jun 10, 2010

I have my system set up to dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and Windows XP Pro, using GRUB 2 (1.97~beta4) as the boot loader. I want to remove Ubuntu and GRUB 2 from the system and install Windows 7 in a dual boot environment with Windows XP. My concern is to be sure that in the process of removing Ubuntu I do not make my system unbootable by removing or otherwise screwing up GRUB without replacing it with the Windows boot loader.

I read a suggestion saying that the most straightforward way to do what I want is to simply install Windows 7 and, during the install process, select my current Ubuntu ext3 partition as the Windows 7 system partition. The suggestion said the Windows 7 install process would overwrite the MBR with the Windows boot loader, effectively uninstalling GRUB 2. The Windows boot loader will find the existing XP installation and give me a choice between Windows 7 and XP at boot time. Does that scenario sound right? Would it work the way I have described it? (I know I would no longer have Ubuntu. That is OK; I intend to reinstall it later.)

For what it is worth, here is my current partition layout:

/dev/hda - 320 GiB internal hard drive
/dev/hda1 - 37.26 GiB ntfs boot (Windows XP)
/dev/hda2 - 18.63 GiB ext3 (Ubuntu 9.10 /root)
/dev/hda3 - 1.69 GiB linux-swap
/dev/hda4 - 240.51 GiB extended

Ubuntu :: Restoring Grub After Installing Windows?

Jul 5, 2009

I had to install windows for my sister, and I had a 20gb partition there for backup ( /data/ ), and well, that's where I was going for. After reformatting and installing Windows, I try restoring grub and this is what I get:

Code: grub> root (hd0,5)
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes

[code]...

Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. /dev/hda: Not found or not a block device. Searching for an alternative way to install it, I found that if I 'installed' Ubuntu over my Ubuntu partition, it would automatically restore grub. But when I get to the partition tables, I get a message saying that "The computer has no operating systems on it" and it considers my hard drive as empty.

Software :: Restore GRUB After Installing Windows 7?

After some brief research on the Internet, I created a Live CD of Fedora 12, and booted into that. Accessing the terminal I tried typing:
