Fedora :: Delete GRUB And Boot Straight Into Vista?

I was dual-booting Vista Business and Fedora 12 on the same hard drive. I deleted the Fedora partition and expanded the Vista partition to use this space.
I figured that because GRUB was on the Fedora partition (at least, I thought it was), I'd just be able to load up Vista as usual.
When I turn the computer on, a GRUB command-line comes up, and to be completely honest, I have absolutely no idea what to do at this point. I'd quite like to just get rid of GRUB entirely and boot straight into Vista, but again, I don't know how.
I've tried using a Vista recovery disc to sort out startup problems, but it doesn't do anything because the problem occurs before control is passed over to Vista.
What can I do to fix this problem? Can I get delete GRUB and boot straight into Vista? How?

I've recently reinstalled all the os's on my computer, just now I'm going with ubuntu (general use) win xp (for flash, it doesnt play nice with 7 for some reason) and win 7 (for games). Everything is fine, but I can't get grub to boot me straight into either of the windows versions: Each option makes brings me to the windows bootloader, where I can choose between "Windows 7" and "Older version of windows". I want to go directly from grub to xp/7, without that extra menu. How do I get rid of it?

I was running a ubuntu server on another PC which has no keyboard. only power and lan cable is connected and i was remotely admining it from my desktop PC. When i turned that Server PC on earlier , it goes straight into user login screen of ubuntu server. But right now i see the grub menu list which is expecting the keyboard Enter input. how do i remove that so later on i don't need to plug the keyboard and hit enter to goto server login ?

I'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

I am new to Fedora, having used Ubuntu for 2 years. However, I am a little dissappointed in the latest Ubuntu releases and want to try something new. So I installed Fedora 10 on my second hard drive, deleting Ubuntu. On my first hard drive, I have Vista installed. During installation I followed a guide for dual-booting and it said not to install Grub to the MBR of the Windows partition, so I followed that advice...
This caused a Grub error 15 on the next boot. I booted the Fedora installation from the second hard drive. My hypothesis is that the Grub bootloader of Ubuntu was still installed somewhere and it could not find the Ubuntu linux kernel. Therefore, it gave error 15. So I installed Vista again and am hesitant to try Fedora again... How can I install Fedora alongside Vista properly (as dual boot)?
Or should I stay away, because it is apparently too difficult for me? Is it worthwhile to make a separate /home partition as I read that it is preferred to do a clean install every release? Could I just do that with Gparted and then assign the partition as /home in the Anaconda installer? The downside is that I then need to create a swap and / partition too, right?

Shrinking the Vista partition and format the rest of the HD as ext4 and install Fedora into that partition and put the GRUB in MBR, is this the right way to dual-boot fedora with Vista?

I did a fresh install of Fedora Core 10 32bit on my Caompaq Presario AMD 64 laptop which originally only had Vista ultimate 64bit. When I go in to grub and choose windows I get a screen that says:
Windows failed to start...

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?

I have a multi-drive system:
C: RAID 10 (WD 500 GB x4)
D: Data Drive (WD 1.5 TB)
E: Back-up ( Seagate 3 TB)
I shrunk the 3TB drive (E: ) to give me a free unallocated 60GB. Boot to F15 live DVD and did a custom install of the partition.Using the 60GB unallocated partition, use 500 MB /boot, 2GB /swap, and the remaining for /root and chose Fedora bootloader The installation completed successfully but after reboot it just goes straight to Windows 7-64. I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3Ghz with 8 GB DDR3 memory. RAID controller is a HighPoint RocketRAID 4320 PCI-Express and the other drives are connected to HighPoint RocketHybrid 1220 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA III controller. Only the DVD-ROM and Blue-Ray drives are plugged into the mobo's nVidai SATA controller.
I'm not sure if its the drive configuration is causing the problem or Grub was not written to the MBR but apparently it wont let me boot to F15. I'm also running 4 monitors with 2 x Radeon XFX HD-697A-CNDC HD 6970 but only one video card (2 monitors) are working. During boot to the live DVD I notice that it switches from each pair of monitors but not all 4 and only after the login screen that only my 2 monitors are working. I tried the monitor detect and it only see 2 monitors.
Ps. I just love F15 Gnome3. I'm moving from Ubuntu 11.04 Natty.

I use CloneZilla to image partitions and Grub 0.97 in the MBR to boot the os restored in /sda1.
Although it works fine with XP, I can't get Vista or Windows7 to boot. For instance, Vista fails with error 0xc00000e and is unable to load WINLOAD.EXE.
I don't know if it's something in Windows or maybe Grub needs something else besides the following in menu.lst to be able to load Vista and W7?

I've previously had a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu machine that was working fine. Fast forward, I'm not able to boot into Vista at all and decide to reformat, return to factory settings after which I'll simply reinstall Ubuntu to get my functioning dual-boot back. I reformat the drive, everything seems to work fine and when I reboot I'm met by the GRUB screen rather then the Vista bootloader screen I expected. I select the Vista option and rather than starting to boot, seeing the Windows splash and then breaking (as it's been doing for a few weeks leading up to my decision to reformat), I'm promptly given a message that it can't find the disk 5252-ACFA (that Vista was previously on). After further inspection, my Ubuntu partition is still in tact and untouched, so I think the 'reformat' simply reformatted the Vista partition not the entire HD as I'd wanted. How do I modify GRUB to point to the new correct Vista boot?

I will be booting Vista, XP, and then installing Linux with grub. So the Vista boot loader will be setup to boot both Windows, so then when I do install a Linux on the same hard drive, (all on separate partitions) what is the best method to boot up all 3 systems?Should I just allow grub to install on the master boot record, and then chainload XP and Vista. Or I could install grub on the boot sector of what will be my Kubuntu root partition, and then try to add this Linux to the Vista boot loader ?

Here the other day, I decided to try out 10.04 Alpha. But after I had done it, I weren't able to boot Vista anymore. When I choose it in the grub boot loader, it changes to only showing the word "GRUB", and nothing more happens. As a desperate attempt to fix it, and because I weren't happy using the Alpha, I then decided to switch back to 9.10, but the problem with booting Vista persists.

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

Since this morning my system refuses to boot Ubuntu 9.04 installed in Vista using Wubi.It has been working for months, but now it fails to start. I get to the windows bootloader screen. When booting Ubuntu (pre-selected) it goes straight to GRUB. Performed test several times: it is consistent.

I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says:
"Windows cannot start. A recent upgrade or hardware change may have caused this".
And below that:

I want to set up grub for a dual boot system of xp and vista. The thing is that I have vista installed and would have to install it ance again after setting up XP in order to use the microsoft bootloader. And secondly I slowly want to get into linux...
This is how I tried it: I have four partitions on my HD and want to install the Bootloader on /dev/sda3. I started up the ubuntu live cd, mounted partition3, opened the console and tried this command line which I found in a tutorial
grub-install --root-directory=/media/hda3 --recheck /dev/hda However I get the following error message:

I have removed Ubuntu and I just have Windows 7 installed.
When I turn on the laptop, Grub tries to load but it fails. I have used Windows 7 install DVD and clicked into repair windows start so I should get Windows default bootloader back, but when I restart, Grub is still there...
How do I remove grub and get the laptop to boot into Windows automatically?

Note: I'm booting right now using iBoot, how do I repair this problem? I may run chkdsk, Windows asks me to run it every time I boot into it since 1 or 2 weeks... maybe it won't repair the boot loader until I ran chkdsk, I dunno

I dual booted opensuse along with vista. I installed opensuse in extended partition, with grub and gave the option as "boot from extended partition". Now everything is fine. I am able to boot into suse as well as vista. Now how can I restore my vista bootloader? I want to uninstall openSuse. When I try restore mbr from hard disk. There is absolutely no change!

I have just installed Linux on a partition of my hard drive. Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

I've got a machine that I'd got 9.10 on, that I've now upgraded to Lucid Lynx - and I'm having the same problem with dual boot (or lack thereof) that I was having previously.
Rough scenario is:
(Original Vista machine had)
C: Windows Vista OS + Windows software, etc.: 500GB - single NTFS partition - SATA drive
D: General dumping ground for data. 500GB SATA drive. Was single NTFS partition, now shrunk to install Ubuntu.
So is now:
- NTFS partition (containing general rubbish)
- Ubuntu / partition
- Ubuntu swap partition
... and then 3 x 1TB SATA drives making up an (Intel ICH9R) FakeRaid RAID5 array - that Windows can happily 'see' and use, but I don't care about Ubuntu having access to it or even seeing it.
Lucid Lynx is installed to /dev/sde6 (IIRC) - but when I boot the machine just boots straight into Vista.
I've done what I can to try and get GRUB correctly installed - to the point that right now I probably have it splattered just about anywhere and everywhere.
So - now - the machine boots and simply presents me with "GRUB Hard Disk Error" and stops...
I can fix this by running the Vista repair, with a fixmbr etc. and putting the MBR back to 'normal' on the first boot disk (/dev/sdd in this case). The machine then just boots straight into Vista.
...or I can boot into Ubuntu (or Vista) by booting off a Super Grub Disk (CD) and selecting "Boot Linux" (or whatever it is) - and it correctly boots Lucid Lynx from /dev/sde6
Ideally I want a proper GRUB dual boot menu - but I just seem to be getting into more and more of a mess!

I tried to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows XP machine, using the USB stick trial OS and automatic installation. My screw-up came when I left my external USB hard drive plugged in during the install, and as far as I can tell, Ubuntu was installed on that as opposed to my internal HD. Now when I try to boot, I get knocked straight to the grub rescue prompt with an error message that basically shows my "no such device (my external's ID)" -- assuming that the MBR (which I know nothing about editing) is trying to boot off the external that isn't actually enabled until an OS starts it up, and dumping me at the rescue prompt when it can't find it.
I can still load up the trial Ubuntu off the original USB stick (though can't get online with it without wireless drivers), but that's as functional as the computer gets right now. And I don't have a Windows Setup CD anywhere (using a rooommate's Mac at the moment with a terrible European keyboard on it). So is there any way to edit the MBR or something to tell it to boot my regular XP off my internal HD, at which point I can re-partrition and try this whole thing again, or otherwise remove the failed install of Ubuntu through the trial-stick or... well, I'll leave the suggestions up to you all. I've been working on this since about 4am last night and my brain is kind of fried.

I have a toshiba notebook with Windows XP and Ubuntu studio. I removed Ubuntu partitions with the idea to install classic Ubuntu, but... grub don't recognize Windows to boot. I formatted the hard disk as slave from another PC. I installed Windows again trying to delete the grub, but, it is already there. I am trying to repair grub from Windows with: FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, fdisk /mbr from MS DOS, but that is not working.
Any suggestions:
- To delete the hard disk complete and start again everything. (deleting grub also)
or
- To repair boot sector for Windows

I upgraded from Meerkat to Narwhal. After all the files have been downloaded and installed it rebooted. Once it rebooted it went straight to the GRUB command line. After couple of hours of research, I ended up at

My root was at (hd0,1). So therefore I put this in at the GRUB prompt.

linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot
I did what it said and it got me into Ubuntu. Nice! It asked me to: After successfully booting into the system the user should run sudo update-grub I did. Next it asked me to review (/boot/grub/grub.cfg). That's where it is hairy, my file has multiple root settings and with msdos settings. That doesn't seem normal.

how to change (rename, delete) lines from boot list in grub 2, Ubuntu 10.04? For example, when I boot my pc, I have a boot list with options "Ubuntu 10.04", "memtest" and "Windows 7". I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.
