How to installs and I used gparted to create my install of fedora 10 on my laptop (which had xp on it). After a major XP crash I reinstalled with Vista business on the XP partition. Now my linux partition is definately there however I Vista boots now and the grub loader does not come up.

I booted of the live CD (9.10) and tried to reinstall grub, I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed before windows wiped grub. sda3 is my root partition, sda2 is the partition where all my media files are located. I mounted /dev/sda3 to /media/root and then I tried to reinstall grub with: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/root /dev/sda It came out with no errors, and then I restarted my computer. Grub started, but with a command line. It was the 1,97 beta-4 version. Since I'm quite unfamiliar with GRUB (or really technical linux stuff)
I've just installed Windows 7 in a separate partition to play with. Trouble is, it's wiped out GRUB. I was expecting this and I know last time this happened it was easy to fix. The forum serch found a thread with 3 ways to re-install GRUB. I've tried each, and none have wored. Methods I've tried
1) The aptitude install grub-pc command ran and said it had worked correctly. On re-bootong, Windows started without any GRUB screens on the way.
2) The chroot method stated it installed correctly after raising a few warnings - after I used the --force command, as the install failed without it. Again, reboot and get Windows without a GRUB screen...
3) Normal grub-install command (no chroot). This went as per the chroot command.
From where I'm sat, it looks like I'll have to do a clean Linux re-install on the disk and then restore my linux files again from a back-up - something I'm not particularly over-joyed by the prospect of...
I had two OS in laptop windows vista and linux mint and when I used to start my computer I used to get different option for os like linux mint, linux mint memory check, windows vista etc.. but because of virus windows vista got crashed so I formatted disk drive C: which were containing windows vista and reinstalled fresh copy of vista.. but now when I start my computer vista start automatically, I do not see GRUB options to run windows os or linux mint..Is there a way to reinstall GRUB to get options like I used to get before formatting ?

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

So I installed Fedora 10 on my second hard drive, deleting Ubuntu. On my first hard drive, I have Vista installed. During installation I followed a guide for dual-booting and it said not to install Grub to the MBR of the Windows partition, so I followed that advice...
This caused a Grub error 15 on the next boot. I booted the Fedora installation from the second hard drive. My hypothesis is that the Grub bootloader of Ubuntu was still installed somewhere and it could not find the Ubuntu linux kernel. Therefore, it gave error 15. So I installed Vista again and am hesitant to try Fedora again... How can I install Fedora alongside Vista properly (as dual boot)?
Or should I stay away, because it is apparently too difficult for me? Is it worthwhile to make a separate /home partition as I read that it is preferred to do a clean install every release? Could I just do that with Gparted and then assign the partition as /home in the Anaconda installer? The downside is that I then need to create a swap and / partition too, right?
Shrinking the Vista partition and format the rest of the HD as ext4 and install Fedora into that partition and put the GRUB in MBR, is this the right way to dual-boot fedora with Vista?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

I have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is my first time using Fedora. My previous experience is from Ubuntu. However I want to give a try for Fedora so I went ahead to install it on my new computer. Problem is that Fedora Installer (Live CD) wiped out my NTFS Partition. Causing my computer unable to recover Vista from factory DVD because it lost system partition as well. I want to know if this is my error or a bug in installer.
Original partition setup:
220 GB - Vista System Partition (NTFS)
14 GB - Recovery Partition (NTFS)
First I resized system partition under Windows Management in Vista:
170 GB - System
50 GB - Unallocated
14 GB - Recovery
Using GParted from Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD, moved recovery to the left:
170 GB - System
14 GB - Recovery
50 GB - Unallocated
Rebooted into Vista, make sure everything is fine. Then put in FC 11 Live CD, using custom layout setup in partition, intended partition layout is:
170 GB - System (NTFS) - Primary sda1
14 GB - Recovery (NTFS) - Primary sda2
200 MB - /boot (ext3) - Primary sda3
sda4 - Extended Partition
45.8 GB - / (ext4) - sda5
4 GB - swap - sda6
After I check my setup and pressed enter, it returned with unable to format /boot error: -1. Restart FC installer, it tells me that my hard drive needs to be re-initialized. I clicked no and reboot. BIOS tells me that no OS is found. Attempting to recover from factory DVD failed, telling me that system partition is gone. I want to know did I do something wrong or is this a bug in FC installer.
i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

After not booting into my Ubuntu partition for a while, I noticed that grub had disappeared, being replaced by the windows bootloader. I followed the steps here under "reinstalling from liveCD" and I was able to get a grub command line when I rebooted, but no boot menu. So I booted into Ubuntu and ran update-grub like the instructions say, and the output indicated that Ubuntu and Windows had both been successfully found and added to grub.cfg. But when I rebooted, I still only got the grub command line.
When the instructions had steps for if you had a separate boot partition, I used /dev/sda1 because it is marked by fdisk as being the boot partition. I thought that maybe update-grub was only seeing /boot on the Ubuntu partition and wasn't touching the boot partition, so I tried mounting /dev/sda1 as /boot, but after that grub didn't boot at all, it just goes straight to Windows and I haven't been able to reinstall grub even after following the steps again several times. How can I get grub back?
I've reinstalled win 7 (dualboot). Then booted with rescuecd and tried to fix grub.

This gave ma a grub shell on boot. The prbm was that this was grub1 - v0.97
I ran a proper 2nd time

Now on boot I can spot grub loading and black screen with blinking cursos on top. ubuntu 10.10, separate /boot, uncrypted /root (which is probably the cause) Also I have deleted the 2 win partitions (sda1, sda2) and made a new one (sda1). The /boot is still sda3, can this be the cause?
Was using preupgrade from FC11x64 to 12x64. Preupgrade caused alot of problems like /boot not enough diskspace. After some searching found the steps and preupgrade proceed happily but after reboot got kernel panic grrr.
Took 3 days to find another machine to download and burn the FC12x64 disk. So I booted via the FC12x64 disk and selected the 1st option to install/upgrade. I thought it is upgrade and so choose replace my existing linux system however it wiped out everything on the disk. I have some important data in my home directory. I think it is in LVM, not a partition like /dev/sda1. How can I recover them? Was using stock settings.
i am multi booting with another operating system that doesn't boot on a pc and requires a special bootloader to make it work, but before i can install that bootloader which will overwrite grub on the mbr. how do i install grub on the hard drive so that the special bootloader will exist and will recognize grub and boot Ubuntu from the hard drive instead of the mbr can this be done with the ubuntu live cd. remember i am installing grub on the hard drive, not the mbr and it's grub2

I decided to create a Clonezilla image of the ext3 /boot partition from my laptop, as that has exactly the same partition scheme. I've restored that. I realise it may not work but it might save me reinstalling F11 from scratch. How does one reinstall grub in Fedora 11 given that /boot is on a separate partition? Booting from the F11 DVD in rescue mode, running chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.

However, the final step results in this warning message: "grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea....."
I guess I agree - that's not what I want to do. Where is the defect in the procedure and how do I overcome it? If I try alternative advice, available in the forums, by using the command
