Fedora Installation :: Re-install To Remove LV And Use Ext4 Only?

Jul 2, 2010

Thinking of a re-install to remove LV and use Ext4 only. [Root is too large] Can I back up Home from the LV and move it to an external drive. If so will I be able to reinstall and Custom partition so I can use Ext4 and then copy the Home files back to my new Home partition. I have only a small knowledge of LV systems so just want to be carefull.

Fedora Installation :: Install From LiveUSB - 11 - Boot Can't Be Ext4

Jun 9, 2009

I booted into the Fedora 11 on my netbook, and used the desktop icon to install to hard-drive. I specified to use "Free space", and hit next. From there, it just stalls. The "Install Fedora" window does nothing, and I'm going on a half-hour now of nothing.

Tried three times, still nothing.

The first time I tried, I chose to replacce old linux installation (ubuntu), and when I told it to install Fedora 11 root as ext4, it said the boot can't be ext4... so I chose ext3 and it said root device must be ext4...

Fedora Installation :: Minimal Install Media - 'ext4 Cannot Be Used For Boot' Error

Jun 15, 2009

I live in a country where 1Mbit broadband is a premium service for large businesses. I am paying a little over $40 a month for a 128k connection with monthly capping. I want to download Fedora but the download is just huge for my connection, especially as it is used for work 14 hours a day. I have attempted the LiveCD and got the 'ext4 cannot be used for boot' error. I also have several other specialised distros on this machine and it's going to be a pain inserting a new boot partition just for Fedora.

Like it is possible with Slackware, can I just download the first CD of the Fedora 11 set and get a minimal install from this or does Fedora need the whole set of disks? Is there a simple enough net install option that I could use instead? I can't understand why they can't just release something like Ubuntu's alternate install CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Possible To Install Live USB To Ext4 Partition

I was wondering if it's somehow possible to install the Live USB to an ext4 partition, this because I have a 4gb filesize limit on fat32 and that means I cannot make the casper-rw any larger. And next to that I can decently manage permissions on that.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unaccessible And Not Used 1.2 Tb Ghost Ext4 Partition Made During Installation?

Sep 16, 2010

I am not sure this is the right forum, its more about partitions, but it is a bit like it. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit. When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

My questions are; How can I access and use that partition? What might these files be? Can I delete them? How would I best mount them? This is a picture of yast expert partitionerImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Ubuntu Installation :: Install System Backup Made By Remastersys In EXT4

Feb 2, 2010

I have a question about ext4,remastersys backup : I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 via the upgrade button in synaptics, so it means that the files system was not touched, which means that my system is still ext3 as it was when I installed the 9.04. I can make a backup of my system as it is configured right now (that's how i like it) using remastersys.

Can I install my system backup into my machine after formating it into ext4 or when I create a backup using remastersys it must stay in the files system as it was when it was backed up? The issue is that right now the 9.10 responds from some reason a little bit slower than my 9.04 responded (to everything e.g. open/close windows etc...) and I read in the forum that ext4 makes 9.10 run faster.

Fedora Installation :: Clone System To SSD LVM To Ext4?

Feb 9, 2011

I am currently running x86_64 F14. I am replacing the HDD(s) with one SSD and one HDD. What I want to do is a fresh install but pull all of the packages over from current install. I am planning on backing up /home and all of that so I can just rsync it. One of the issues though is that I currently use LVM. LVM does not support TRIM yet for the SSD. So I was just going to use ext4 and an extended partition for all of my filesystems. Can I just make a kickstart file that will have all of my current installed packages in it and pass that to the install? Seems like I remember that from my RHCE class. Sadly I don't use kickstart enough to remember.

Fedora Installation :: 'Upgrade' Filesystem Ext3 To Ext4 While Upgrading ?

Jun 11, 2009

Is that possible, I mean when I upgrade F10 to F11 with yum upgrade is there a way to 'upgrade' the filesystem to ext4 for example (with the exception of boot partition)? Or I have to reinstall fedora like new?

While changing the filesystem can I do it by parts? what I mean is for example: I have 2 partitions like '/' and '/home' with ext3, so I backup data in '/home', change '/' to ext4 then mv files from '/home' to '/' and change '/home' to ext4 and finally mv those files from '/' to '/home'. Is that possible?

Fedora Installation :: 11 - Can't Be Mounted When Booting After Converting From Ext3 To Ext4

Jun 16, 2009

I upgraded F10 to F11 successfully.

Then I convert the / partition filesystem by the following steps:login as root user in multi user mode read [url], and execute tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 modify /etc/fstab, change the type of / to ext4

reboot
(because fsck say running it on a mounted filesystem can cause filesystem damage, so i decide to reboot to single user mode first. maybe it's a mistake here) try to boot F11 to single user mode, failed

reboot from a SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD
run e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 in SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD, no error reported

reboot
try to boot F11 normally(multi user mode), but it failed at: EXT3-fs: dm-0: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (40).

I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.

i tried to install f13 from live cd and failed. i have 2 questions. i do not understand how to setup partitions according to scottro's message. It says you need small ext3-formatted /boot partion and a ext4-formatted root partition. Does this configuration have to be setup before you boot into the live cd? If so, please tell me how to set this up. my pc is pentium d with 2 hard drives. The master hd is has xp, ubuntu8.04, and swap partitions. I would like to use one-half of the slave drive for f13.

Second question. I would like to be able to verify download of fedora-13-i686.iso. I downloaded it to my xp partition and installed Windows MD5summer. Where or how do i get the md5 file for this iso file?

Also the 11.04 CD seems to have a lot of issues based on my browsing the top few pages of the forum.

Fedora :: Yum - Install / Remove By Repo?

Nov 2, 2009

I just installed the repo for Go-OO (an OpenOffice derivative). Apparently I didn't go about installing the actual Go-OO program from the repo correctly (i.e., I missed something crucial to actually run it), so I went ahead and reinstalled Open Office proper until I figure out exactly what I'm doing. (N.B: I'm still quite new to Linux and yum.)

Is there a way I can list yum installs strictly by their repository? That is, is there a command I could use to simply list every install that came from the "GoOo" repo? I'm aware that yum list installed returns repo info, but I'd rather be able to list by one repo at a time because (a) I want to very thoroughly clear off everything from the GoOo repo, and (b) it would definitely make it easier in the event that I have to perform any blanket removes in the future.I'm unable to find any single or short string of commands that does this, so I'm guessing either the answer is no or I'm overlooking something ridiculously simple.

Fedora :: Add/Remove Software -- Can't Install Anything

Fedora 13, Acer laptop, dual-core AMD Turion, etc.I can call up the Add/Remove software GUI from System/Administration/Add/Remove Software just fine, and I select the packages I wish to install by checking their boxes. (Side issue -- I wanted to mark all of the games, but there seems to be no way to select everything). Looking at the GUI, I clidk Apply, and it goes through a dependency resolution phase. But where's the "Install" button? I found an "Install" menu entry in the selection menu, but it's always greyed out. At the moment I'm installing using yumex, which seems to be working, but is the standard Add/Remove Software really this broken? What am I missing?
