Ubuntu :: Filesystem Ext2 - Ext3 And Ext4 ?

Apr 30, 2010

I run an upgrade and an update on a lucid lynx beta 2. --- got no problems. but about the filesystems i have some questions because it seems for me that at every system boot the system will run an fsck. somtimes it's shown up, somtimes not. but in /var/log/messages and in syslog

I have always following messages ( occured in beta 2 too ).

But first before i continue - here my disk layout:

And here my filesystem types:

This is my problem because those values are seems to be static ! ( note: this partiton is mounted but not in use ) and last not least: the drive is an external usb scsi disk. but on the other side lucid lynx is running fine on my box.

General :: Ext2 Or Ext4 For Bootable USB Flash-drive?

Jan 26, 2011

I want to install Ubuntu to a USB Flash drive (so I have my Desktop everywhere and can customize it as I want). I'm still choosing what's the best filesystem for the USB; Ext2 with no journaling or Ext4 with journaling but performance increase? I know that journaling will probably reduce the life of the USB flash drive dramatically, so is Ext2 the obvious choice? Or is it a bad idea to install Linux (Ubuntu probably) on a USB Flash drive? I tried running a live CD from the USB drive, but it wasn't very customizable - which is the point of carrying my OS with me.

CentOS 5 :: 5.5 Ext4 Conversion - Ext4 Partition Is Recognized As Ext3?

I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting

yum install e4fsprogs
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2
nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

Ubuntu :: LiveCD Will Not Detect Ext4 HDD That Had 9.10

May 4, 2010

I am trying to do a fresh install on the HDD that had 9.10, a 80GB ext4 drive. All that shows up is my other HDD, a 160 GB ext3 drive. Why is this happening? "ls /dev/|grep sd" only returns sda and sda1. My 80GB drive has a few partitions, one for swap for instance.

Edit for clarification:
2 harddrives in 9.10:
80 GB HDD /dev/sda
1 ext4 partition that has ubuntu installed (/dev/sda1)
1 extended partition (/dev/sda2) for swap (/dev/sda5)
160 GB HDD /dev/sdb
1 ext3 partition /dev/sdb1

Only the 160GB HDD is detected when using the liveCD (as /dev/sda and /dev/sda1). I can mount it just fine, but my 80GB HDD is not detected. After ejecting, I can boot my 80GB HDD just fine...

General :: Grub 97 And Add Ext4 Support?

Jan 6, 2010

I have slackware 13 ext4 partition. Debian lenny ext3 partition. and a /data ext3 partition Debian contains the grub boot loader i've been using to boot slackware. I'm going to wipe debian and I installed grub to /data with knoppix cd. Grub on debian booted into slackware just fine, but the grub I installed (onto data partition) with knoppix live cd does not find the slackware kernel. I am using the exact same menu.lst. apparently debian grub had ext4 support, but knoppix does not. both are grub .97. Is there a way to add ext4 support?

Ubuntu :: Make A Backup Of Ext4 Partition Via Clonezilla - Messed Up External Disk

Mar 13, 2010

Tuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.

I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

Code:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 16 2010-03-12 00:50 /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 32 2010-03-12 00:50 /dev/sdc
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 48 2010-03-12 00:50 /dev/sdd
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 64 2010-03-12 00:50 /dev/sde

What could have happened? Would the data still be accessible on the internal drive? Did I just loose 1.5TB data that was stored on the external disk?

Ubuntu :: Ext4 File System ?

Aug 6, 2010

I'm trying to figure out why files in linux are oriented in the folders the way they are. In Windows it's much simpler to picture. You have program files (C:Program Files(x86), system files (C:Windows), user settings for programs or personal stuff(C:User), and some weird folder names. I was noticing that the Ubuntu ext4 filesystem is a little more complicated. Some folder names are self explanatory, but others are not. Is there a guide, or some reading material on the history of the linux filesystem and how it morphed into what is presently used in Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: FATSORT For NTFS Or Ext4

Nov 14, 2010

I really need to be able to sort the directories on some of my disks - not just sort the display of them, but actually sort the contents. I remember the old Norton DS.EXE that did it back in FAT16 days before long filenames, and after some googling, I found fatsort is in the repositories, but that doesn't do NTFS or ext4...

Ubuntu preferable (obviously, since I would really like to sort some things in my ext4 partitions), but if anyone knows a Windoze program that can at least do the NTFS partitions, that will be a start... Of course, I could get a new HDD, manually create all the folders in order, and copy the files one-by-one in order, but I don't have that level of patience!
