Recently installed F12 through the text based install and have got to GNOME gui but when i got to system/administration i only get two options and those are for display changes. Is there some way to install the features i missed out on? namely Add/remove programs which i can't seem to find anywhere

I want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.

Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o
I'm a new Fedora user and I having difficulty with the product.I downloaded both the live cd and dvd of F13. I installed F13 from the live cd and after it completed I created my user name and then rebooted. Once I logged in I went to Administration -> add/remove program. I then clicked on package collections and ticked off the ones that I wanted. I then clicked on the APPLY button and I noticed that in the lower left corner of the screen (below the left panel and just above the Help button) it said Running and then nothing. If I attempt to close the screen it says that all selections will be lost. I also went back and set the filter to list "all installed" and the programs that I had selected were in the list.I then decided to try the dvd iso, so I blew everything away and installed F13 from there, but I encountered the same thing.So I'm at a loss what I'm doing incorrectly

However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it. I wasn't sure at first what that ment, being a begginer, but I think it means going into system-refresh package lists. So I do that,ut it still wont give me the program list. I'm really confused, I come from using windows computers and I don't know what to do now, me be a little clearer, when I click on one of the catagores to find software, nothing comes up but the defalt packages that come with the system. I go into the system-Software menu, and there are no boxes cheked. I thought that this maybe to problem, so I try to cheak the top box labled without parentheses "Fedora 13 - 1386". However, when I open system -> administration -> add/remove software, nothing is available. Trying to enable any of the sources listed under software sources tries to use the internet, which I don't have up yet and I don't see any option to add a new source... although I don't know why adding software from the install media would not be an available option by default?So how do I add/remove software from the install media using this add/remove software management tool? I don't want to have to browse the dvd directly for packages, I want to browse by the nice categories and have any dependencies taken care of for me... and the searching capability is nice to

I'm not sure if this is a feature of Gnome, compviz, or some other part of Fedora, but whenever I place my mouse in the upper right corner of the desktop, all of my open windows zoom out to a Mac-like Expose feature which allows me to select which window I'd like to change focus to. Does anyone know how to disable this feature? I actually find it highly annoying, as I tend to place the mouse in that region either on accident or unintentionally, especially when accessing my machine remotely via VNC. I've had a lot of trouble googling for combinations of "Gnome expose" and "Gnome desktop expose", I have a feeling I am calling this feature by the wrong name. how to do this myself - install the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager (the package name is "ccsm") and disable the "Scale" plugin.
I am using Unison so synchronise my files. I have configured Unison to start when I log on no problem, but is there any way that I can open Unison when I click log off, such that it will wait for Unison to finish before actually logging off (I need to input a password and respond to prompts)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to customise my desktop, and I disabled gnome-panel as I don't need it (and auto-hide wasn't working). Now when I boot up I can't open anything as the "run" dialog using alt + q (changed shortcut from alt + f2) doesn't load, nor does the terminal via shortcuts. I'm using Compiz, and disabled nautilus drawing the desktop so Compiz could do it for me.
Do you know what I can do to get this back or to get the "run" dialog to open again? EDIT: Skype ran as start up, so I got a friend to send me a link, which opened my web browser. I then downloaded a file, and viewed it in nautilus which meant I could get to the terminal and run gnome-panel from there. I can now get it back easily when needed. Do you know if there is a way I can get the "run" dialog to work without needing the gnome-panel running?
I now have Fedora 14 64bit up and running.
I need a bit of clarification. I've been using Debian based OSes. I just want to make sure that I understand how to install software using Fedora.
While I had the Live DVD desktop running I downloaded the Google Chrome .rpm pack to the download file, right clicked on the .rpm and opened with the archive manager. The archive manager came up and showed me a file folder, the a popup came up on it's own and ask if I wanted to install, clicked yes and every thing from there worked, Chrome was installed and worked. When I tryied to download the plugin for Google and do the same as before, the install popup didn't come up. This is the part where I made a mistake, I went to the download folder and double clicked on the .rpm and the install popup came up, and I installed. This some how messed up the Live desktop to the point that I had to reboot, shut down didn't even work right.
I should have opened the folder the archive manager placed the .rpm and then double clicked on the .rpm to install instead of within the dowload folder.
I aslo read up on how to use rpm -i filename From the terminal can I Or does the .rpm package have to be in the correct folder before installing?
Also from the live dvd I tried using sudo rpm -i , but got a warning and said I would be reported.

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?
I have made the choice to go with the LXDE desktop and want to completely remove Gnome and KDE. I know that you can just pick which environment you want at login, but I want to remove Gnome and KDE because they are both quite large and I am trying to optimize my system's drive space and memory.
I have issued the following command to remove KDE, my question is. what packages do I really need? Is this process wiping files and apps that I need? See results below. What command do I use if I want to remove only some of the packages and keep the others?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI created a new panel in Gnome (Fedora 12) and it wasn't showing up right. So I just told it to make another (with the same results), and finally one more. So with the two that are there by default, that's 5 total panels... None of the newly created panels where displaying at all. But after creating the last one the system froze up. Now when I try to boot into fedora my system locks up as it's trying to load GNOME...
Is there any way for me to remove those panels through BASH? So I can just boot to a prompt and get them removed. After that I imagine GNOME will load correctly again...
One of the last nagging issues i'm having with F13, and it's because of a 50k config editor that is inexplicably absent from a 675mb .iso......or am I mistaken?
