I would like to install F12 to a bootable USB device from a working Fedora partition other than the liveUSB-creator option. Is there a way to do that from a working Fedora machine without have to burn a DVD? Seems like there should be but I can't find a guide for it.

I would like to include current source packages on the same dive so if I don't have internet access at time of install, can can still install what I need.I know with Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can get this but how can I do this with Debian?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the Fedora-15-i386-DVD.iso and want to install Fedora 15 from it. I don't want to use the LiveCD version since it doesn't have all the packages. So I follow the tutorial given here under the section titled "How to Make a bootable USB Drive to Install Fedora instead of using a physical DVD ". Everything finishes off well. However. when I boot my computer using the USB, it says "USB doesn't have operating system. Safely remove and reboot".
Now, what to do? I also didn't get the line the tutorial saying, "You should now have a bootable USB stick which will run an 15 install. When you boot the stick, you may also add askmethod to the boot line and select a hard drive install and select the drive as /dev/sdb1 (or your USB device drive) and the path should be / " What am I supposed to do?

I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on my 1 tb my passport drive and am having loads of trouble. i am unsure how to format the frees space for the boot loader and main drive. Also what partitions are specific for ubuntu to function. This drive is formatted with masterboot partition and contains two other partitions for media and backup. The computer it will be mainly used on is a macbook pro with refit installed on it.

However, after setting up my ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A785TD-V EVO (AM3) board to boot exclusively from USB (removed the HDD as an option), my PC still boots directly to Windows 7.

(please no comments about paperweights etc., it's all I have!) I want to install a Linux dual-boot version that is heavy on antivirus scanning support. Since I can't boot to an .iso disk, is there any other way to do this? I can transfer files to it via USB thumbdrive or download via Internet.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu netbook remix on acer aspire one netbook. I used the usb-creator.exe tool to make bootable usb drive. When I boot from the usb drive it comes up to the boot options screen. But when I try to either install or run ubuntu from disk it goes to a black screen and stops or goes to a page long error message saying "cannot mount drive" and a list of command options. I also am not sure if setup gives you the option to reformat the hard drive. Or if this has to be done prior to booting from ubuntu usb-disk.

It don't have an optical drive so I wish to make an bootable installation disk with an USB flash drive. I followed the guide on Ubuntus homepage [URL] How to make an USB drive). But it did not work. I have an standard 4 GB USB flash drive which is plugged in. I have formatted it to FAT. And it is now empty.I went to System > Administration -> opened 'Startup Disk Creator'.
I pushed in all the options. But then the system asked for a password. No worries, I thought. It must be my own. But it was not. So my problem is that I am missing a password in order to authorized the installation of Ubuntu 11.04 on the USB drive. what are A. the proper search phrase for it? and B.
I created a bootable Debian installer on my USB flash drive. The Debian Installation Guide advises;

I formatted the drive to clear it, created a new FAT partition and copied the Debian.iso to it again. When I tried again to create a partition in the free space the same error occurred.

System was working reliably. Moved components into a new case. Now system will not boot. Either gives error that the disk is not bootable or displays the motherboard configuration screen.
I am able to boot Debian with a USB drive and have attempted fixes in "rescue mode".
I confirmed that the system is booting to EFI mode.
I have tried re-installing the grub-efi package and re-creating the Grub config file with update-grub.
When re-installing Grub I receive "Discarding improperly nested partition ..." warnings but the installation succeeds. I have searched this warning message and the forums seem to say that it can be ignored.
I have tried re-setting the motherboard NVRAM using the jumper block.
The computer shows "debian" as a boot choice in addition to the usual raw drive model listing. However, neither of the choices will boot successfully.

I shrinked the partition on the internal drive holding using Win 7's built in tools and would like to clone my USB installation to the new partition I can now create, I work a lot with Macs in my line of work and there I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backups, works like a charm..
As far as I know CCC uses rsync which is available for Linux as well so I guess I could use that? I plan on editting the Win7 bootloader later on to make it possible to boot from the new Fedora partition.

I want to make a live USB drive, perhaps even 1 with its own GRUB and a choice of operating systems..Its 16gb so it will fit..or maybe just install multiple desktop environments so I can switch depending on the resoruces of the computer I am using..Gnome>E17>LXDE.But I want it to be a regular account with a root/administrator password, ect. Even when I turn on Swap with Gparted Im still not getting the benefit of the large swap area I have created..is this because of how the operating system uses swap? Is there a live distro that will save files and settings to swap before using up ram, by default? If not, is there a way to change the behavior of Ubuntu Live CD?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm installing Fedora 11 x86_64 from the DVD iso. The SHA256 checksum was fine, and the media checked out fine just prior to install. The F11 install seems to go perfectly and I get all the way through the installation. However, on reboot, I get this message, "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"!!!!I'm installing to an old Intel 975XBX2 motherboard with 4GB of memory, which I have used successfully, flawlessly for every single Fedora install since F6. I've only been using one hard drive with a FAT32 partition, and an NTFS partition for Windows XP, the remainder of the disk is Fedora.I've probably tried this F11 install about 8 or 9 times already with no success; actually, the installation seems to go perfectly, but I just cannot boot the PC. I think there's something wrong with GRUB being written into the MBR of the hard drive, because I cannot boot DOS on that FAT32 partition, I can't boot into the NTFS partition which contains XP, nor can I boot into F11.Anyone else having problems with the boot? I've been a long time Fedora user and was counting on the reliability of F11: Wondering if that Anaconda re-write had anything to do with all of these problems?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

The problem is that, just as the title suggests, my netbook is unable to boot from a USB device, nor does it have a slot to place CDs/DVDs in. I'm not really in the position to purchase an external CD/DVD drive, however I'm not sure that would work anyways since it would connect via USB.. What can I do? Am I stuck with Windows 7 forever on this netbook?

but have access to a Windows XP computer too...
I tried upgrading to Natty last night through the update wizard and the install went perfectly... until I rebooted and it got stuck at a screen with an "_" in the top left corner of the screen and nothing else. I guessed that this was a grub problem, so I tried reinstalling grub2, but to no avail. So, I burned a Natty install CD and proceeded to reinstall, formatting the partition (/home was on another partition and did not get formatted). Again, the install went great, rebooted and this time I get "No Bootable Device - Please insert a bootable device and hit enter". So, again, I try re-installing grub2 from the live CD. I purge, uninstall, and reinstall grub2... nothing works! What the hell?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my new Toshiba Satellite Laptop... I had installed debian for some time but last week suddenly stopped working.
- the computer stopped working at all... nor bios access.
- I did a new bootable installation in USB drive and downloaded the latest debian iso from official website and created the bootable device via dd as usual.
- I installed the new debian but after I removed the usb drive in order to boot into my new system. I was taken to a screen saying "Start PXE over IPv6 -- Start PXE over IPv4 ..." I followed several links looking for a fix, and all of them lead me to disable network boot option in BIOS setup...
- I disabled but after that it appears a new message "No Bootable device -- Press restart system" and nothing happens from there.
- I have found info in Internet regarding this issue, but all I find is "windows related"
- Someone recommended me this: "The BIOS can no longer recognize the hard drive as a bootable device. This could be for a number of reasons. Your best bet, if it is still under warranty, is going to be to bring it back to where you purchased it"
- But instead, what I did was to create a new bootable device, this time containing XUBUNTU and installed it to the machine, I had the good news that the installation proceed without any problem, so I could figured out that my machine it is still alive...
- Back to my issue and hoping that something unexpected happened that fixed the machine, I got back and did a new Debian bootable device, also hoping that the latest was corrupted or something, but after reboot to my new system... the problem persisted again.
- I chose to have 1 partition in full disk.

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place.What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.
Im taking the class now in college once a week. My professor said that we need to install any Linux operating systems so I chose Fedora, but he said we need at least 16GB free of space to install it in our computer, sadly i only have 1GB space left remaining. I told him about it and he told me about installing Fedora in my flash drive that has space of 16GB. I really am interested in this course and want to understand all of this stuff so can anyone tell me the process to install Fedora into flash drive so I can boot it anywhere else other than home? Also since he said I need 16GB to install it don't I got to buy 32GB flash drive at least?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the *.iso for a Fedora 10 Live KDE installation. It is currently on my hard drive. I tried burning it to a CD with Roxio using two different methods. The first one was not a bootable method. So I checked the Roxio documentation and burned the image that way. In burning an *.iso to a bootable image on a disc, Roxio asks for three different file types, none of which are *.iso. I selected my *.iso because that was all I had. Then I burned it as a bootable to a CD.
When I tried to boot it, I got a black screen with a message at the top left reading something like there was no operating system available. I thought that was strange, and I do not know what to do.
I've successfully created bootable DVDs for several distros over the years. First, I downloaded F13 x86-64 the day of the release, checked the sha256sum against the CHECKSUM file (it passed), and burned a DVD. I see 5 folders and 10 files on it, as expected.I restart, and my PC (AMD Phenom 9600 quad, Gigabyte S Series GA MA69G-S3H motherboard) does not boot from the DVD, but from the hard drive.So I get into the bios, check to make sure that the boot order is correct (it is) and try again. No joy.
Next, I assume I screwed up, had a bad burn, down load and burn again, checking everything. Still won't boot from DVD. Try getting the ISO from torrents, (checking sha256sum all the while), burn my 3rd DVD (using Brasero this time) and - same problem.Now I assume I have a hardware problem, and for grins, put in the F12 ISO DVD. It boots from there just fine.So I don't have a hardware problem, and I seem to have 3 good burns, but it's not recognized as a bootable DVD.
