OK so here is my problem, i have an OLD P4 2.8 GHZ PC with 512MB ram, last year i was able to burn i believe fedora 9 to a CD and install it on this PC before i removed the drive to use as an external drive. "Dont know where the CD went"
I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!
Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!
Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.
I wish to use my laptop to create a system for my Soekris 4801. I don't want to take the server down for the lengthy install ( took 6 hours last time, Fedora 5 ). I want to create the image on a USB drive for the 586 Soekris server on my 686 HP laptop. Then scp the image to the Soekris and reboot and configure the server.

So then I checked to see if I had rpmfusion-nonfree, and I do. I really have no idea what to do, I have spent hours trying to get this work. I want to be able to open any media file, avi, wma, mp4, etc.'m using Fedora 15.
I downloaded Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso and placed it on a 16GB USB drive using the Windows LiveUSB creator which had downloaded when I first download Fedora 11.The USB boots fine and I choose the language and the the keyboard layout. I tell it the image is on the USB drive it displays /images/install.img as the image.
However after going through all the steps up to choosing where I want it throws an error saying cannot find image #1 on the hard disk.Now if I boot again and instead of choosing the USB drive I hit F2 and then choose the USB drive then /Images then the install.img and press O.K. it says it isn't and just cycles around the choose drive/image.
I have downloaded Fedora-15-x86_64-DVD.iso and try to install as usual:copy the isolinux directory from the image and boot with grub，but the installer doesn't let me select the media and connects and downloads from network directory. After waiting a long time,it reports the network not available, and ask me to select repo from NFS, DVD or http/ftp, still no local hard driver. Is this a new feature of F15?

I figured out how to get the icon on the top panel, but that is naturally started as my user gsm.
Is there an easy way of migrating the whole mailbox and subfolders form the root install to the gsm user?
Or is it easier to start from scratch?
I recently started trying fedora 10 out on live cd (in my case usb ) and loving it. I want to install it, should I get the dvd image, or would it be okay for me to just install off live cd (usb) and install whatever I want through the package manager later... Why/why not? Also on live usb, I can't find the package manager under applications.

The uderscore is flashing and i can type stuff in but have no idea what to type in to find the kernel image, or why it cant find the kernel image.
I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

I'm trying to install Fedora 12 on my EeePC 901 from a 8GB USB stick. However I get the error each time after clicking Next on the boot loader setup screen. Code: Missing ISO 9660 Image The installer has tried to mount image #1, but cannot find it on the hard drive. Please copy this image to the drive and click Retry. Click Exit to abort the installation. I tried this with the DVD as well as the net install image. I tried setting up the USB stick with unetbootin and semi-manually [1]. I still get the same error.
I've set up the first 4GB SSD (sda1) as / ext4 partition and the second 16GB SSD (sdb1) as an encrypted /home partition. sdc1 is the USB stick and sdd1 is a 16GB SD card in the card reader. They are not used in the installation. I realize, that the 4GB / partition will probably be too small etc, but I'm just trying to get the installer to go the package selection page.
I'm interested in trying out Fedora but would use it on my current Netbook (an ASUS eeePC 1000HE). I currently have Mandriva on it though which I don't want to stop using.Can I install it on a Flash Drive? If so, would it be in a sense a LiveDVD type of installation or could I actually do an install on the Flash Drive to use it as a Hard Drive? If so, what would the minimum flash drive size be?
Also, if I use the Flash Drive as a hard drive would it still have to use the internal hard drive or can all 3 partitions (swap, root, and home), be on the flash drive? Would it be possible to run it on more than one machine since I also have an Acer Aspire One?
I would like to install F12 to a bootable USB device from a working Fedora partition other than the liveUSB-creator option. Is there a way to do that from a working Fedora machine without have to burn a DVD? Seems like there should be but I can't find a guide for it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a mivvy l310 netbook. Before I had FC12 on it and I couldn't upgrade (not enough space on /boot, tried all commands and it didn't worked) to FC13. So I said I would do a fresh install for FC13. I used live CD FC 13 iso to make the usb drive (16gb) bootable.It boots, all goes ok, untill the installation is in progress of copying files to my HDD (at this point my HDD is empty, since it was formated). At about half of the progress bar of copying the installation files to HDD it stops with: ""There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media."" I can't go further and install it. I tried making the usb drive on FC13 (finished successfully, on another laptop with liveusb creator) and also on SUSE and it behaves the same.
I also tried second method (described in a thread around here, it worked for me in the past for FC11), by just making the usb drive bootable, using commands in the terminal (here my FC13 kernel, on another laptop crashes, for some commands) and when I try to install I get only: "missing operating system, sleeping forever". For this method, it does not boot at all, so I guess the usb drive is not properly setup. I don't know what else to try. I tried normal dvd iso, live cd, tried making the usb using commands, using live cd, with commands on suse, on FC13 etc...
LE: I found in messages log that I have: zlib_inflate error fc13
LE LE: what's more weird is that I downloaded the same live image of FC13 and burned it on a CD and managed to install it on my other laptop and it worked.
Later update: I tried now with the DVD iso for FC13 and now I get: operating system not found
I downloaded the 32 bit Fedora 14 and burned the image to DVD. I didn't want to try to install it on the HDD because the last time I tried to install a distro that used Grub and not Grub2, the only OS I could get into from the boot screen was that OS that I installed with Grub.
I went ahead with the install in hopes that it would see my 4G flash drive, sdc was present so that is where I installed it. I mounted / in sdc1 and the bootloader in sdc. Everything seemed to install, install finished and said I could reboot. On reboot it tried to boot from the USB but just sat there, it never did boot.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran the install from the Fedora12 DVD, downloaded via Bit Torrent, so integrity should be OK. The install shell does not see my 3rd harddrive, which is where I want to install. I burned the KDE live version of Fedora12 to run the checks suggested by marcrblevins. The results are below. Fdisk clearly sees sdc, where I want to put Fedora.I tried installing from the live CD, but the install shell was identical to the one from the DVD, so I'm pretty sure they are both good copies. The CD install could not read the 3rd harddisk, either. Ubuntu versions 9.04 and 9.10 installed to this partition without problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and burned the Fedora-13-x86_64-dvd iso to install on my shiny new box (MSI NF980-G65 MB, AMD Phenom II x4 945 CPU, 8GB Corsair DDR3 memory, generic ATAPI DVD drive, 2 500GB SATA drives, 2 1.5TB SATA drives). I boot from the DVD and and take the default install/upgrade option on the menu. I've tried with the default boot options and with about a dozen different options, all give the the same thing.
Looking console 3, shows the following:
ERROR loader: removing ddmode.conf failed
ERROR loader: got to setupCdrom without a CD device
It can't find the CD/DVD drive that it booted from. The install on console 1 is prompting for a driver to load. Do I need to download a driver for a generic ATAPI/IDE CD/DVD drive?
I'm trying to install Fedora 13 (Desktop Edition) on a new hard drive (the previous one working on Vista is dead now). I have downloaded Fedora and put it on a USB external drive for installing, but my computer doesn't seem to detect it (all I got is a blinking "_" on black screen).

1. I ran the live disk, it works.

3. I complete the installition and reboot.
4. The live disk ran again, where is the OS installed on hard drive? or it was not installed at all?

I want to connect hard drives to USB ports and boot them by changing the boot drive in BIOS and using the boot setup. I have an old 250 GB hard drive with Windows XP and another old 60 GB hard drive with Linux Fedora 10 or 11. On my old computer Windows XP was on the C250 GB hard drive and Fedora was on the secondary 60 GB hard drive using GRUB. tried connecting my old 250 GB Windows XP hard drive through an IDE to USB enclosure to a USB port restarted my computer, changed the first boot drive in BIOS to USB. I saved and exited BIOS. I then pressed F12. This caused a popup of a display showing all the USB ports. I was able to recognise my 250 GB hard drive. I selected it. I got a message "GRUB loading, please wait". I then got a message, "Error 17".

I boot OK and start the install process and choose "Basic Devices" but it does not appear to detect my only hard drive (SSD). All it detects is the USB memory stick that I booted from.
I have Windows 7 on my disk. There is about 50GB free space which I planned to use for Fedora.
