Red Hat / Fedora :: Bootable Backup On Existing Drive Holding Win 7

I have Fedora 12 installed on an external harddrive (USB) and have it configured the way I want. Inside my laptop I'm working on I have a Win 7 installation. My plan is to slowly migrate to Fedora and only use Win 7 when needed, so far so good..
I shrinked the partition on the internal drive holding using Win 7's built in tools and would like to clone my USB installation to the new partition I can now create, I work a lot with Macs in my line of work and there I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backups, works like a charm..
As far as I know CCC uses rsync which is available for Linux as well so I guess I could use that? I plan on editting the Win7 bootloader later on to make it possible to boot from the new Fedora partition.
How would I go about it? The internal drive is GUID (or is it GPT?) formatted and loosing the Win 7 installation isn't an option of course.. All I could find were commandlines to backup certain folders or entire drives but I only want to backup my partition onto a different partition..

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.
These dumps were to tape 000289.
*** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].
Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.
Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well
st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0).
scsi1 (0,3,0) : reservation conflict

I've searched extensively on Google and here and can't seem to find anything addressing what I'm trying to do. The motherboard of my notebook (Ubuntu 9.10) completely died earlier this week. I pulled the hard drive and got an external case for it. Is it possible to have it boot into my original Ubuntu via USB?
Trying to do so as-is comes up with multiple Grub errors (Invalid Environment block, file not found, etc.) and I've tried addressing these Grub errors separately with no luck, but I have a feeling I'm skipping a basic step somewhere to make a primary drive USB bootable without reformatting.

If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?
I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.

Is there any possibility to move my already installed ubuntu linux to the usb flash and make it bootable. So that it would boot on the other machine?I have an installed ubuntu karmic linux installed on my machine. I want to make it portable, to move it with all installed packages and tuned software to a usb-flash drive.

I would like to install F12 to a bootable USB device from a working Fedora partition other than the liveUSB-creator option. Is there a way to do that from a working Fedora machine without have to burn a DVD? Seems like there should be but I can't find a guide for it.

I have an existing Fedora 15 system installed from scratch.I've ordered a harddrive identical to my SDA and want to add it to my existing system as a RAID1 setup.I've googled around and cannot find recent clear instructions how to accomplish this. I don't want to reinstall everything from scratch. It should be possible to create the RAID1 using the existing data disk and then mirror everything up?

I want to be able to add a physical drive to an existing filesystem, and PRESTO! That filesystem has more storage and/or redundancy. When one of the physical drives eventually fail, no problem, Ive lost some redundancy, I just have to install a new drive before another one fails.Lets assume I have 4 physical drives.*What Is This Configuration? *[URL]...But I am unclear how to get a logical volume that is mirrored and linear.
The last time I tried software RAID 1 (dm-x) under lvm, it was very fragile. Systemd could not start it,and then an update to mdadm put a stake through its heart. So I know that does not work.

I downloaded the Fedora-15-i386-DVD.iso and want to install Fedora 15 from it. I don't want to use the LiveCD version since it doesn't have all the packages. So I follow the tutorial given here under the section titled "How to Make a bootable USB Drive to Install Fedora instead of using a physical DVD ". Everything finishes off well. However. when I boot my computer using the USB, it says "USB doesn't have operating system. Safely remove and reboot".
Now, what to do? I also didn't get the line the tutorial saying, "You should now have a bootable USB stick which will run an 15 install. When you boot the stick, you may also add askmethod to the boot line and select a hard drive install and select the drive as /dev/sdb1 (or your USB device drive) and the path should be / " What am I supposed to do?

I have an Intel Core2 Duo system that I want to upgrade from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14. I have downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 14, however, I do not want to burn a DVD for installation, and would like to be able to perform the upgrade from a USB flash drive. Where can I find information that will explain how to make a bootable flash drive that can install Fedora 14?

I'm really chuffed with the first bootable USB stick I created so easily with 10.04 desktop. I've added applications that I want, codecs etc and got the configuration just how I like it. Now I'd like to back up the entire stick, as I use it a lot and the stick will die eventually. I've not used Clonezilla, but I wondered if that would make a copy? It's a 4G stick, with all the remaining space allocated to the casper persistence file.

I would like to back up my current system to a bootable memory stick. (I do not want to create an image of the ubuntu installation disk.)
such a backup should not be a big problem---even after updating 350MB of ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I still have only about 3GB used. so, it should all fit easily onto a 4GB stick.
is there a GUI or script solution that will make a full bootable backup of a running ubuntu system (incl root, etc.)?

I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/

Here is what I would like to pursue: I would aim to create a USB drive which a system can boot from if needed. However, this system would not be the generic Lucid 10.04 iso, it would have specific packages that my current system has. Also, it would start up and run with my current system settings if possible.
I did look into Reconstructor, but it doesn't appear that that would have the capibility of changing the default settings to match my current system's settings. Also, it looked like there wasn't a way to upload a list of current packages of my system (I would have to manually select each package, taking quite a while). So is there any way to make a bootable USB matching my current system? Or is reconstructor the closest thing to that kind of customiz-ability?

I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I've got sidux installed onto a 150GB sata drive & a 1TB sata drive for music/emails etc all formatted as ext3. When I boot into the KDE Fedora 12 (live CD) I find that I can't access that 1TB drive. No point installing Fedora 12, if I've lost the best part of a TB.

I have an issue that my BACKUP drive is listed twice. (internal FAT) I am running F12 32b. I have it listed in FSTAB so it will automount & set the permissions. I did this in the earlier versions I upgraded from. I would like to either get rid of the other entry or, if easier, make it auto & set permissions but I don't know where it is.

I am running Live 12 on my CD rom drive of my dying laptop. I have a major Windows registry error on that system and am working to recover my files. I have successfully moved a couple of folders from the laptop to my Seagate Free Agent Drive as a test.What I would like to know is, is there a way to copy my files and folders without literally dragging and dropping each one? We're talking 140 G of folders....sigh.

I have a cron backup scheme in which I rsync, then tar, then copy files on my internal hard drives to an external (USB) drive. When it works, it works. But I often get a "Permission Denied" message for all of these tasks. how the external drive is auto-mounted so I edited the etc/fstab so that the owner of the cron job is also the owner of the external drive (I think. Unfortunately, I'm not at that machine right now (it's at work), I can't give the exact fstab line (I will post it as an update to this thread next time I am at the machine).) BUT, I still get times when the cron backup runs fine and other times I get the Permission Denied. This is a shared machine that is dual-booted, so what I *think* is going on is that when the machine is rebooted to Fedora, but nobody logs in, I get a Permission Denied for the cron backup. It seems like on days when someone has logged in as the main user and left without logging out that the cron backup runs fine.

I'm currently learning to use rsync to backup my music collection. I have a Firefox tab open to the rsync manual page(s) and have been reading man rsync and running experimental rsync operations.I've been doing this for the last 3-4 hours. I've used rsync for this purpose in the past with disastrous results. What was and is once again (due to a month and a half of file pruning) a 9000 file music collection had mysteriously grown to over 25,000 music files and 80GB of data! This was likely due to the fact that I didn't really know what I was doing with rsync and had never spent too much time learning about all the parameters, what their functions are and how they may relate to my goal.Here are the particulars:
* Source drive is a 500GB disk, /media/sata500/music/.
* Destination drive is a 250GB USB disk, /media/FreeAgent/music, connected to the same computer that houses the 500GB disk.
* I want to copy or backup files from /media/sata500/music to /media/FreeAgent/music.
* I do not want to create ANY duplicates of files that exist.
* I only want to add files to the destination drive if they are new on the source drive, like if I rip a CD and add the contents to the source. I want them copied over next time I run rsync.
Here's the rsync command in it's most recently used form, and probably very immature at this point.

This appears to have copied all files and folders and I'm satisfied that my goal has been met with some success. To convince myself of this I ran the command and then once it was complete I added 2 new songs putting them in their respective folders on the source drive and ran the same command again. Two files transferred. Exactly what I want.Both folders now house 20,931 files and use 40.6GB. Identical as far as I can tell.What I'm concerned about are time stamps and play count data, etc. Anything that changes the original file. I don't want this data to cause a file to be transferred as I'm afraid that the new file will be created along side the old file of the same name thereby starting this whole music collection expansion thing all over again. I've invested a lot of time and effort to get it pruned down to where there are virtually no duplicates and albums are correct in that they contain the proper songs in the proper order.

I recently ran across a client that wanted me to set up a new IDE Drive in his existing Red Hat Server. I reluctantly agreed to try. I am completely uneducated in Linux and could use some input. The server itself appears to be set up in text mode as all that I see is text after the initial boot up screen goes away. It, at present is set up in an old dell machine on a 3 Gig drive and all he wants is to be able to add a secondary drive to extend storage capacity. My boyfriend has an old IBM Thinkpad that he said I can use to install Ubuntu on and use it as a 2nd computer. Here's the problem, the computer doesn't have a CD drive, but does have USB. I've been trying to get a bootable USB drive created, but with no luck.
The USB drive is 2GB. Which Ubuntu would fit on here? The Thinkpad has a 20GB hard drive, and about 512MB memory. The processor I think is a Pentium III. I've even tried installing Ubuntu through the wubi.exe file, but it won't load. The current OS is a Japanese Windows 98. Do I need a bigger flash drive? The netbook remix version? or something else?

I made a bootable Ubuntu installation within my USB stick but now I want to delete it.
First I tried deleting all hidden and no-hidden files and folders but obviously I need to reset the MBR or something.
In System->Administration->Disk Utility I formatted the drive having now a blank device (FAT), but still the Ubuntu image is mounted.
Then I clicked on 'Edit Partition' and uncheck the Bootable checkbox but it returns an error (whether mounted or unmounted the drive is).
