Fedora Installation :: How To Install Fedora 11 On External USB Drive With Anti-virus?

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place.What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.

I want to setup a Linux Fedora based Anti-Virus & Anti-Spam Server on my LAN. I have more than 60 Windows users with Proxy Squid running on LAN. Our Email server is hosted on the Internet. Because of virus/spam generate problem, emails are worst affected & the users have a lot of problem on Email, as the outlook gives error. It happens when a PC generates Spam & our IP gets blocked by the ISP for some time. Thats why I want to setup an Anti VIRUS/SPAM Firewall on my LAN (before the Squid), so these spams do not go past the Internet Gateway.Hope u guys understand my problem & suggest some useful links, software & documentations.

First you have to download avast anti virus software from avast website.now you will see avast web page called avast Linux home edition.you will see a Note: the program will not work with out a valid license key. Background is this: Laptop has an internal h/d (obviously) so I removed it from laptop. Then set Bios to boot from external h/d. Installed Fedora 11 on ext. h/d no swap partition as drive already has 4 partitions. Fedora ran lovely!! I then replaced internal hard drive but left bios to boot from external hard drive. Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again,same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. Any help very gratefully received. M/c has intel dual core processor, 3 gig of ram.

i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..

I want to make a anti-virus Linux to put on a USB drive for use with other computers that have viruses. The only problem is I have no idea how to do this. CLI-only should be fine (if there are any CLI anti-virus programs). So is there something I can get that's already made for this or should I get a regular distro and remove everything I don't want and install what I do? What tools should I get.? Also, a link to instructions on installing on a USB drive would be helpful (I also plan on putting some LiveUSB's on the same drive,

This might be a very stupid questions, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any antivirus software for Linux?I know that it normally is not something that is needed, but in the company where I work they have a policy saying that every OS must have a realtime anti virus program installed on the pc's with automatic updates.

I am brand new to Linux.I was wondering if there is an anti-virus software that runs under Linux (Ubuntu Live), that can scan Windows files and get rid of the viruses?I ask this as I had a trojan that was detected, but could not be deleted under Windows; I had to us Ubuntu live to delete it, which seemed to have worked.

I am running Windows XP in VirtualBox. I generally only use it for iTunes and some light browsing occassionally. Downloads only occur on iTunes, but it does have internet access. And my wife will still only use Windows, so if she uses this particular machine it is available to her, and she occassionally goes to facebook on this machine.
Should I install an anti-virus? Is it really necessary? I am pretty certain my Linux install would be unaffected even if a virus or other malware did occur in VirtualBox.

I tried to ask this question in the other thread but the admin was saying to me that my other thread here [URL]..( it was not very much the subject of the thread ) People that use Unix,Mac OSX or any Linux OS all none windows do you need anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky? And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.

Advised on another forum to install XP pro then Linux on HD. Decided to try it. Not that savy with computers and have a mini-laptop in addition to desktop that was attacked. Virus
cause most programs to fail. Disc was nearly full (250GB) so I'm buying a refurbed Seagate (500GB) and need to learn to back up files onto flash drive or something. Lost a lot of photos and emails that were good reference material. Heard a lot about Linux so I'm going to give it a try.

Installing in external drive at the point where to put the GRUB loader I have these choices :
1. Master Boot Record (MBR) at -dev/sda (internal HDD)
2. First Sector of boot partition - dev/sdc1 (external USB HDD)
How can I put MBR in sdc instead of sdc1?

As a completely new user of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, I will no doubt be asking some pretty basic questions, first. in Evolution Mail I am unable to get in or out it merely shows waiting, as Firefox is workingI am connected to the net (hard-wired to broadband wireless router), suspect I put dud info. in the initial set-up, but cannot find how to edit or re-enter these parameters.

My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?

i installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
