I would like to build an oem style install partions that is bootable with menu to choose if I want to run install or boot already installed system. I would like to include current source packages on the same dive so if I don't have internet access at time of install, can can still install what I need.I know with Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can get this but how can I do this with Debian?

The hybrid image on the stick does not occupy all the storage space, so it may be worth considering using the free space to hold firmware files or packages or any other files of your choice. This could be useful if you have only one stick or just want to keep everything you need on one device. Create a second, FAT partition on the stick, mount the partition and copy or unpack the firmware onto it.
I want to put non free firmware packages on the stick but when I try to create a FAT partition in the free space using Disk Utility I get the following error;

I formatted the drive to clear it, created a new FAT partition and copied the Debian.iso to it again. When I tried again to create a partition in the free space the same error occurred.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on my 1 tb my passport drive and am having loads of trouble. i am unsure how to format the frees space for the boot loader and main drive. Also what partitions are specific for ubuntu to function. This drive is formatted with masterboot partition and contains two other partitions for media and backup. The computer it will be mainly used on is a macbook pro with refit installed on it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Debian onto an IBM ThinkPad 240X. The 240X will only boot from either an internal IDE hard-drive, or an external floppy-drive. For now, I have decided to ignore the option of using the floppy drive. I have other computers to support the process, an IBM ThinkPad T43p (Pentium M) as well as my primary laptop, a ThinkPad X200s (Core2 Duo). I have tried installing the hard-drive to be used into the T43p, then booting the Debian NetInstall from a USB thumb-drive, installing as usual, then transferring the hard-drive into the 240X. This does not completely work; GRUB and LILO will load, but the computer freezes very early (almost immediately) in the boot process.
Please note, I am trying this on a CF card. The 240X has an IDE-CF adapter, and my X200s has a USB-CF reader.So, I want to try to load the actual Debian Net Install on the 240X. Ideally, it will happen something like this; I will partition the hard-drive into these 2 partitions:
sda1: the Debian Net Installer
sda2: an empty partition waiting to have Debian installed onto it URL...
but the part I do not understand is how to get GRUB or LILO installed onto the CF card. I am wary of running commands such as "grub-install" as I do not want to mess up my GRUB install on the computers this command would be run from. If I run a command such as this, I would want it to ingore everything about the computer it is being run from, and only modify files or install onto the CF card. I would not want it to acknowledge the computer it is being run from as far as available installs, architecture, etc.
Can you install a live cd onto hard drive? I'm in a live environment now and don't see an install option.

Debian 8 installer does not detect the hard drive during installation
I've recently tried to installed Debian 8. The problem is that the partition menu gives me these 3 options:
1. Configure iSCSI volumes
2. Undo changes to partitions
3. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk
There are no options for defining partitions or any hard drive during installation. After searching the internet i found that the problem because the solid state disk SSD cache. How I install a Debian 8 with computer which has a hard disk drive and a solid state disk cache.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI noticed that when using the "daily built images" from Squeeze via Netinst, during the disk partitioner, I am un-able to make the /boot partition bootable.or some reason I can't enable the 'boot' flag on several different ISO attempts and differenthardware vendors. The only thing I can see is that this is an issue with the netinst ISO image from the daily built images. Has anyone seen this or is this a known issue / bug? I don't want to file a bug report if possible but I searched and couldn't find anything on this. I doubt I am the only one who's experienced this so far.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410
I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

How can i copy my G4L bootable CD into a partition, so thar i can boot from it, and not use the CD anymore?The idea is based in the fact that i am so lazy ... that opening/closing the CD is getting on my nerves

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

System was working reliably. Moved components into a new case. Now system will not boot. Either gives error that the disk is not bootable or displays the motherboard configuration screen.
I am able to boot Debian with a USB drive and have attempted fixes in "rescue mode".
I confirmed that the system is booting to EFI mode.
I have tried re-installing the grub-efi package and re-creating the Grub config file with update-grub.
When re-installing Grub I receive "Discarding improperly nested partition ..." warnings but the installation succeeds. I have searched this warning message and the forums seem to say that it can be ignored.
I have tried re-setting the motherboard NVRAM using the jumper block.
The computer shows "debian" as a boot choice in addition to the usual raw drive model listing. However, neither of the choices will boot successfully.
I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy karmic ubuntu studio will no longer boot. I believe I may have intermittent hard drive issues. I've backed up all my important files so I'm not extremely worried; however, I would like to try to get my setup bootable once more. I've reinstalled grub, and on trying to boot, I get the grub kernel selection. Regardless of what I choose, the system won't boot. I believe grub is alright, but something else is not. What else could I try to make it boot again? I've mounted the drive, chrooted to it, updated and upgraded, but it still won't boot. I may be doing that wrong, or there may be something else I need to do.

My current installation has a layout like this.
The rest is in '/' integrated.
Does it make sense to give more folders a own partition? And if so, how much should you apply to each folder?
There are 2 users on the computer and there is nothing special or big installed.
I have currently 2 more harddrives which host music/picture & movie data's.
The reason for my question is just that i want to save my data in case of one folder failing.
I'm running 10.04 LTS (64 bit) During a recent attempt at dual booting Windows 7, the Windows installer made a boot partition on the wrong drive, formatting the drive, and therefore destroying all my data.
The original partition was NTFS, and the new (unwanted partition) is NTFS.
Is there something in Linux I can do to recover the data that was there, or am I going to have to install Windows on yet another drive and use some Windows tools?
The data on this drive is extraordinarily important, containing ten years of digital photos, my source codes, and musical compositions (protools sessions etc).
I've been using ubuntu about a year, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. Today I was trying to install ubuntu on my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive. I don't have a usb stick, so I attempted to partition my external hard drive. I stupidly clicked "erase disk" on startup disk creator and erased the entire drive instead of the partition. I want to get back the files I had on this external. I searched and managed to find that people had been successful with testdisk. when I choose to analyse, it only finds the partition I created for the live cd.
When I choose advanced, I can find my older partition (FAT32) but when I choose to undelete I get:

Sectors are identical.
A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access. Any data; even if the partition is not bootable. I searched but I couldn't find anyone receiving this error message or how to deal with it. So I tried using photorec. Photorec is recovering all of my documents currently but without the filenames and file structure, it's more or less worthless.
I have an hp laptop with 2 hdd slots, both are sata. it came with a 320gb hdd with vista ultimate 64. i added another 320gb hard drive to my laptop and installed kubuntu on the second hard drive. Since vista was my primary hard drive, parts of grub were installed on it i.e. stage 1.5. And the rest was installed on the kubuntu hard drive. Because of that neither os would boot independently of one another.
I eventually got tired of kubuntu and in wanted to uninstall it. I formatted that disk. Now vista gave me grub errors, like I knew it would.I was going to fix the vista boot sector and mbr by running bootrec.exe off of the vista disc. But since I have an hp laptop, hp doesnt provide a recovery disc with just vista, it is an install of the factory image of the os plus software and therefore doesnt have the utilities I need to fix my problem.I ended up navigating to some sort of command line in the windows recovery environment and tried running it there, but no luck.
I tried navigating in the hp recovery environment, and accidently had vista start to reinstall itself on the drive, and actually I did that 3-4 times, each of which I stopped the recovery early on, within 30 seconds, but it had managed to mess up my partition table. I was wondering if there is some utilities in linux/ windows that will help me restore the partitions back the way they should be? I have done a data recovery with get data back for ntfs, and was pretty successful getting some stuff back, figures since the mft was screwed up.
So first of all I want to make an exact clone of the hard drive. Something like dd but just make an image file for now. Since there are no partitions on the drive I dont think I can use partimage, or drive image xml and I wonder if clonezilla will work. And I dont know how to test it without have to reload the image and wiping the drive in the process. I have imaged the drive with get data back but it does me no good cause I cannot restore that image back to the drive, or at least dont think I can.
Second I would like to see if I can recover the partition table , or mft that was over written. Here is a list of programs I can use for imaging or recovering. [URL]Third, since I have 2 320gb hard drives, one that is corrupted, and one that I took kubuntu off of and loaded vista with the recovery disks. Can I take the mbr, and partition table, or boot sector off of the working vista and move it to the broken 320 and fix it that way?

Recently I built a web server for my clients to host in house. After talking with the web developer they informed me that i needed a CentOS computer with Drupal for them to design the website. This is my first Linux install and after spending hours upon hours configuring the server with FTP, SSH, and configuring our DD-WRT router with proper port forwarding we turned it over to the web designers to start work on the website.
A month goes by and the website is almost done, at this point we go to make a full backup of the hard drive. Due to a hardware problem it fried the circuit board of the hard drive. After attempting to recover the files myself we opted to send it to a HD data recovery facility to recover the information. We have received back a DVD containing the 2GB's worth of data from the CentOS hard drive. It contained 2 folders one for each of the partitions. I can view and see all the files on my windows machine and it appears that all of the data was recovered successfully. I harbored some hope that i could simply reinstall CentOS with the same account information and then just drop the recovered files on top of the new installation and have it start working.
I then reinstalled CentOS on another hard drive in the same computer and used the same credentials for installation. After i successfully booting into CentOS i turned off the machine and connected the hard drive it to my Windows bench machine. After booting into Windows i was unable to browse the hard drive. After doing more research and installing Ext2fsd i was able to see the 2 partitions CentOS had just created, but only able to access the Boot partition. After more research i discovered the default installation of CentOS creates a Raw file type for the 2nd partition and that is why i am having issues reading it inside of Windows.
I then downloaded a copy of Knoppix to see if this would allow me to write the old files over the new ones. After booting up the CD i could only browse to the /boot drive(and im not even sure if this is Knoppix's Virtual /boot or my CentOS /boot).
My question is what would be the best steps to recovery for my scenario? Can the files be placed to the drive and have everything restored? Is the only way to recovery thru reinstalling all applications and reconfiguring from scratch? How difficult is Drupal DB to recover in this type of scenario?
Should the first bootable partition start from sector 1 on a hard disk? or Can it be created anywhere on the disk? I am using fdisk to create the bootable partition.

I need to know how to remove Ubuntu and restore my hard drive without loosing my windows files (which are on a separate partition), I know i have to delete the ubuntu partition but what i am unclear of is what to do after that to restore windows as the primary boot.
Is there any performance degradation or complications that arise from having Linux installed on a separate, physical hard disk from Windows in a dual-boot setup? I have a computer that I'd like to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows but the current hard drive is quite fragmented and the Windows partitioner won't allow me to make a partition large enough to comfortably run Linux+several gigabytes of media that need to be stored. The rig, however, may have room for another internal drive, so I thought that having a separate physical disk reserved completely to Linux would be an easy solution. The tech guy at the local computer store suggested there might be difficulties with this configuration because one drive needs to be the "master" and the other a "slave", resulting in boot complications.

I have a very specific issue that I am having trouble resolving. I have an old laptop and a new laptop with a smaller HDD. I want to copy the windows partition from the new lappy to the old bigger HDD so I have room for Ubuntu. All of my files are on a Maverick install on the old lappy. How can I get all my files and windows to the old HDD and into the new laptop. I am a little stuck on this one because of my limited options.
