I am trying to install Fedora 11 from a DVD. Not the live DVD, the full DVD and it hangs constantly. I had to wait 10 minutes for it to Find Storage Devices, 10 minutes to input a root password and now I am waiting for the drive shares to be setup. It's already been 10 minutes. I verified the disk and everything was fine. Why is this taking so long?
View 4 RepliesI'm attempting to install F12 64 bit. I currently have F10 running on this system. I'd like to do a clean install. I'm using the DVD. I boot the computer with the DVD in. I choose the first option (Install or upgrade). It starts the boot process and then it hangs. [URL]
After asking at #Fedora I was given the advice to boot with `intel_iommu=off`. That gets me slightly further in the process. It gets to the point where anaconda is starting. Then all heck breaks loose. It appears the monitor loses the signal from the computer (power light turns red just like if the computer was off). The caps lock and the scroll lock lights on the keyboard blink about once a second. The DVD drive continues to spin for about a minute and then stops. Since I have no display, I have no idea what's going on.
I tried to run Fedora 13 from a live CD on my old HP Pavilion a375c desktop (512MB RAM,3GHZ CPU,160GB Hard drive). The installation CD boots, shows the Fedora hourglass, but hangs when the hourglass is filled. I have used the same CD on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and a Dell desktop with 512MB memory without any problem. So the problem seems to be on the HP side. I've also tried to boot with CDLinux and Ubuntu live CD on the HP machine. All have the same symptom - hangs at the end of the hourglass during boot. Anything I can do to pass this stage? View 8 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from FC12 to FC14 and now the system/case fan blows full speed constantly. I also moved from i386-PAE to am64.
The CPUs are cool, the machine is basically idle, and the fan noise is really annoying (and blowing cool air).
In FC12 the fan would auto-adjust with CPU load. This is not the case now.
I ran sensors-detect and it doesn't seem to find my fans:

I don't remember ever having to even run sensors-detect in FC12. I searched the board for a bit and didn't see any solutions. I'll attach the full output from sensors-detect.
New to linux. Trying it out on old laptop. First effort to get off MS OS. Toshiba satellite, celeron processor. Probably around 5 years old. Not sure about the rest of the specifics. Downloaded fedora 11, i386 version for DVD. Performed the media check at the beginning of the install (passed). 3 attempts to install so far. Begins without issue. Gets to installing file 841 of 1091 and just hangs. First time it was file # 831. Have let it sit for as long as 7 hours before shutting off power. Do I need to start with earlier version? Would like to confirm before I spend a bunch of time on downloads and burning disks.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.
2 things happen as I boot:
1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen
boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as
1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install
1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)
Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?
New Compaq 610. All good so far but the fan seems to be on continually. Checked load cycle count and seems to be okay so far.
Any ideas? It wasn't doing this before and don't remember doing anything to make it happen but I have been tweaking a bit while setting up the machine.

i have a problem when using the yum gui it hangs at 1/3 of the process meter and wont budge no matter how long i leave it , using terminall everything works fine and fast but i would like if the gui is fixed its alot easier when searching for a suitable software
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu in my PC alongside winXP. I downloaded the ISO and mounted it using a virtual image software (PowerISO used in winXP). I installed Ubuntu using wubi in a 20GB partition. During installation it asked me how much space should I give, I gave it 11gb. Everything went fine. I rebooted but now the computer hangs during startup. I went to verbose mode to see what the error is and found out that everything is ok. The last line that apears is "Setting sensors limit [OK]" and then nothing happens. I have tried every option (safe graphic mode/ demo mode etc etc) but the computer hangs.

The installation proceeds smoothly until the 3'rd CD and then hangs at the FONTCONFIG UPDATE stage. The hung process is apparently rescan-scsi-bus which reaches this stage

It is not possible to kill this process even with "kill -9". I have to kill the parent process which is Slack setup, so the installation is incomplete. There is another recent thread on this issue [URL] but it did not resolve my problem. How to correct or bypass this difficulty (maybe another kernel? I use the default).
I'm currently trying to install ubuntu but the installation process hangs on the second page of the installation (right after select language) I am booting from a usb. NO other OS is installed and I'm currently in "try it now" mode.

I have a PXE server which installed DHCP TFTP AND NFS service. and set them up followed by [URL].
The boot process hanged here:

What I did try to work around is,
1. Set portfast to all the ports connected the PXE server and client.
2. Edit pxelinux.cfg/default, try different setting in "ip=" (I did not find any menu in the internet which explain to to configure this file).
Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.

This program is for updating the microcode on Intel processors belonging to the IA32 family - PentiumPro upwards (x86-64 included). It depends on the Linux kernel driver. The website urbanmyth.org/microcode (mentioned by yum info microcode_ctl) clearly indicates that Intel has taken over this microcodecode distribution, and suggests that it is no longer valid for AMD processors.
I found a reference to a kernel configuration flag CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD (as a plausible subsititute for CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL) that possibly belongs in a script in /etc/init.d - but the above context leads me to suspect this is not true any more. In any event, those flags are not mentioned anywhere in my init.d scripts - in fact nowhere in the entire /etc tree. My microcode file exists, and is dated March 23. How do I get it installed? Or is this completely unrelated to my hanging boot problem, as suggested by the "platform microcode" line in the dmesg output? If so, where should I be looking?
I bought a new issue of Linux Format magazine and saw it had a bootable disk with Fedora installer/live DVD on it which I was eager to try out "The worlds most advanced Linux distro" I put the DVD in my computer and rebooted it. I selected 'install or upgrade'. It started to load (blasting white text at me). I skipped the media test but then the screen was black and reacted to no mouse moving or keyboard pressing. Not even the OFF button, so I pressed RESET and selected 'install with basic video driver' this time it worked. It didn't fill my whole screen like many 'basic video drivers' but they don't cut off much so I was willing to forgive Fedora using one it was proberly only for the install anyway I could download a new one after. I have a Radeon HD 4200 (extreamly crap) intergrated into the north bridge. I can't afford an expensive graphics card. I build it myself so I can tell you what parts it's got if needed. Anyway I progressed through the setup without problems until I got to the partitionor which defaulted to 'Replace existing Linux system' this would delete Ubuntu an maybe Windows 7. I changed it to custom layout or something like that. It started a partitioner and I remembered I wanted to give ubuntu 30GB more room so I resized it. I created a new 50 GB logical partition and select it as the '/' partition, plenty more space for future Linux distributions. Here's the real problem. Soon after I hit install it said some repositorys require a network connection. It had only one option 'eth0' my motherboard has built in Ethernet but I connect to the net with a wifi card I do not have a cable long enough to reach this computer on the other side of the room. So how was I suppost to continue the setup? I pressed okay hoping it would give up and let me continue the setup but it didn't it said they was an error connecting to the Internet therefore setup could not continue. With only one option: 'Exit Installer'. GRRRR. Interestingly enough after I clicked it the disk drive's light kept flashing but the screen went black forcing me to reboot. View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.
Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.

I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.
I have just completed a dual boot installation of FC10. The install was done from CD's I downloaded from the Fedora website. The installation (seemed to have) went fine, and the machine still boots into XP if selected from the menu. The Fedora installation does not complete the boot process. I have three bars that move across the bottom of the screen, and the Fedora 10 graphic tuns white, and then the system hangs. I have let it sit at this screen for as long as 30 minutes. The screen will blank occasionally, but returns to the same place if I hit a key on the keyboard.
I have it installed on an old HP E800 netserver, running dual P3-866mHz processors, 2GB ram, a ATI Radeon 7000 video card, and three 36GB SCSI drives, non-raid. I know FC10 will run on this machine, as I have a friend running it on another E800 without any problems. This machine does have on-board video that is disabled only by plugging a different video card in (Phoenix BIOS).
I have found two problems with the DVD (checksum and media test are both OK).
1. On the Install boot loader (grub) page , if you change the name of the install from Fedora to something else, anaconda crashes, lol.
2. Worse, the installer hangs just after that .

and the install is checking dependencies.

the basic video install, and text install

I tried to upgrade to FC11 via download and DVD and in both cases the install hangs on bootstrap right after remounting the root filesystem in read/write mode.
Since it hangs in this manner, I have not been able to gather any logs...
Im trying to install fedora 11 from the live CD and when i get into the CD meny where it says "boot" and "press tab for boot options" i press enter. then a bunch lines flash across the screen with a lot of error messages. then the fedora loading bar at the bottom loads. hangs for about 1 minute at the very end. then the GMD screen appears. But the GMD screen is all out of place and its patchy as if my graphics card was causing some kind of error
View 1 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.
View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalling new Intel server S5000VSA (Sapello) motherboard with RAID 1. Downloaded F10 32 bit DVD and run install. Everything works fine and select Samba and all that. Install completes but on reboot get a blank screen.
I know with Windows one has to load the RAID driver off the Intel driver CD, so guess that is the problem. But how do I do this in Fedora? Question: How do I get to select the Intel RAID driver in the install process? There does not seem to be any place to stop and make this selection. I tried selecting the Red Hat and Suze installs on the Intel configuration assistant but it then reboots and that is it. In Windows it would ask to insert the Intel driver CD but that does not happen. So I am stuck. I loaded Fedora some 3 year ago and like it but then it was not on a RAID setup. I created a VMWare install on my desktop and did the same install options and it works. So the DVD seems fine.
After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.
I have a requirement where I want to extract the full name of the process running in my box. I tired various options of ps. The wide option gave me the full command but that contains command, the interpreter and also the arguments passed.
