CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.3 Fails To Install On Toshiba Tecra

Not new to CentOS, which I've installed on a few servers. I'm trying to turn a very old laptop (11 years ?), Toshiba Tecra 540cdt (with the latest available BIOS), into a home server. It runs Windows 2000 fine, and was earlier running some Mandriva versions. I'm trying a multi-boot install, from CD1of6. It does boot from the CD, then shows:

Loading initrd.img...
then reboots, and goes through the same cycle.
I switched the hard disk, same result. I have problems too if I try to install the latest Knoppix. An older Knoppix, 5.1 with kernel 2.6.19, will boot.
I have a problem with Thunderbird 3 on Ubuntu 10.04. When starting TB3 the 'mail account setup' box appears but can't type anything inthere... I can close the setup box... the main window is very unresponsive but cosing works also immediately. I fisrst did upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 having the problem. Thinking the upgrade might have gone wrong I did a complete fresh install on that laptop, even verified the CD with md5sum before installing. After the fresh and clean install the problem remains the same.
The machine having the problem is a Toshiba laptop Tecra S1 with 1GB of RAM. I do not experience any other problem with Ubuntu 10.04 on that machine, everything else runs like a charm, there also was no error during installation... I think this problem is related to the Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop because other machines I own don't have problems with TB3.
I have a Toshiba A205 S5804 laptop that had Vista Home Premium installed. Tried to install Centos 5 (2.6.18-8-el5) and when I went through the install process, X Server failed to start so I had to go thorough the command line install. Once the install completed, it only booted to console.
The default resolution for this laptop is 1280X800 but I dont know if that is why or not. if anyone has a clue about my issue, please let me know.. I really dont want to install windows.
I am using TOSHIBA Tecra A8 notebook and i have install Ubuntu 10.04. However sound is not working. Is there any sound drivers for TOSHIBA Tecra A8 and it's version is : PTA83E-01D023AR.
I have a Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop with a resolution of 1024 X 768 and a Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 TE/6200 TE graphics adapter build in, on to which I want to add an external Dell E196FP monitor with a resolution of 1280 X 1024 pixels. I have installed the Nvidia VIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 173.14.22 driver and X server application, but when I go in to the application by "System" -> "Monitors" I get the following message: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?", to which I answer yes.
In here, I go to "X Server display configuration", and "Detect displays". Here both displays (the Dell and the build-in Toshiba) is shown, but I do not know what setting to chose under "Configure", where I have 3 options:Disabled Separate X screen TwinView I want the same screen image on both displays - almost like a projector, but I can for the life of me not get it to work.
It feels like it is a keyboard problem because the symptoms always show after pressing a key.
In most instances, a line I am typing in "gedit" at the correct place in the text is unexpectedly continued a few lines downward even though no arrow key has been pressed. In another instance, I click "new thread" in Linuxquestions, a new window opens asking for a title, after entering the title I click "Click Here to Find Similar Threads", a new smaller window opens on top of the existing one and shows the existing options but as soon as I select (click on) one of these options, the main Linuxquestions window disappears and there is no option of "going back" to it and no "back" button to click.
If the keyboard needs cleaning, how do I do that? I found a few cleaning hints about separate keyboards but nothing about laptops.
I installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.
Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.
I've been trying to get it to work on my laptop off and on for several years now, experimenting first with Redhat (version 6.1, I think) and now trying with Ubuntu 9.04. I've done a full install using the entire hard drive (no dual boot). So I'm trying it for real this time. I'm having a problem with my video drivers. The video is ok (not great) and I don't seem to have any options to adjust it.
When I go into system > preferences > display, I see monitor "unknown", set at 1024x768 with a 75 Hz refresh. If I click on "detect monitors" nothing happens. It says under system > administration > hardware drivers that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've got two options:

For the first part of boot, I have access, but then when it comes up into Ubuntu, the big monitor (a Dell 2500, I think, plugged into the stock Toshiba docking station via DVI) quits working, and all I have is a dim picture (dark, like something's sapping power from it) on the laptop display.....
I am trying to run though the qmailrocks setup on a centos 5.5 and I am running into an issue when trying to telnet to port 25:
telnet localhost 25 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1). Escape character is '^]'. Connection closed by foreign host.
Everything else seems to be working (telnet to 110), and I turned off the firewall entirely, but I still cannot telnet to port 25. I also get a blank error within squirrelmail when attempting to send mail out (ERROR:Message not sent. Server replied: ). I apologize for not going directly to the qmailrocks forum, but they are currently closed down (due to lack of funds). I also am a newbie, so I apologize for the lack of needed information. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know what information you would need.
I have a Toshiba laptop with dual boot W7 & Ubuntu 11.4. Evolution Mail Program was installed and running perfect. My mistake was to try to import my e-mail contacts address book backup for evolution,ever since I cannot start it as it shows a notification that it is still migrating my files. I have uninstall and install the same program but unfortunately the issue remains and I can no more start my evolution email application.

The problem is openwebmail has a dependency on perl-Compress-Zlib that conflicts with perl-IO-Compress that is needed by amavisd and clamav. The error message looks like that:

I wanna install adobe flash player with yum but it fails to download, I think there may be something wrong with the repositories. Totally, could you give me a step by step instruction for installing the flash player.. i have already tried downloading it from adobe web site for linux and rpm (yum) but i couldn't install it. i also had NOKEY letter in the result
I have a problem installing CentOS 5.5 over lan. I set up a dhcp3 server and it works, client got an ip. I set up a tftpd-hpa server and it works, client can boot the install image of CentOS 5.5 I set up an apache server and it seems to be impossible... In the installation marathon I clicked through the menu to the choice of the web server where my installation files are available. I enter the ip 192.168.138.1 and the path CentOS-5.5 and CentOS tells me "Unable to retrieve http://192.168.138.1//CentOS-5.5/images/stage2.img" . Thats right because the two slashes are not right. Where the hell come the two slashes from???
I have installed Centos 5.3 64 bit version and run yum update so the system is up to date. However, I have noticed the kernel version that is installed is:

and when attempting to install from ATrpm.net the nvidia driver I get this message:
yum install nvidia-graphics169.07 nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-`uname -r` ... Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5 is needed by package 1:nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5-169.07-94.el5.x86_64 (atrpms)
Now, yum says the kernel is up to date so how can I get the nvidia driver rpms to install? The entries in /boot are:
vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5
I have checked to make sure that the update repo is enabled. There were quite a few updates applied after the initial installation and the initial kernel was updated as the yum log indicates and also the entries in /boot.
I'm in a hurry to get the wireless to work on my Toshiba A205. Link to system data: [URL]. Didn't have to use anything like ndiswrapper on ubuntu, so thinking its an easy todo here - just need a little prod or two in right direction. In the meantime I'll take a look at the data myself and see if I ain't smarter than I think.
My work reponsibilities now include a new server running Centos 5.2 on a Dual Xeon Dell server machine with Raid 1 on 2 160Gb disks, but I have no experience of Linux, let alone Centos.I figured I'd download an image and load it on a spare machine just so I could get used to the OS and try things out without risking my live server. My only available spare at present is a Toshiba laptop from 2000 (it was top of the range at the time, but probably looks bad compared to my pocket smartphone now).My questions are:
a) Is it feasible to load Centos on this old donkey of a laptop? Would I struggle to find the right drivers, etc., or is it all contained in the distribution?
b) Assuming it runs, would the differences between the two implementations significantly affect my learning experience?
c) Assuming the two are similar enough to make the laptop a useful reference/staging/learning tool, where do I start? I've already downloaded an ISO image for LiveCD (i386) and burned it to a CD but the CD doesn't seem to have anything I recognise. Windows (both Vista and XP) treats it like any data CD and shows no autorun behaviour with it.
I had FC11 installed on a Toshiba Tecra A4 and when I upgraded via dvd, the system "hangs" after finishing the last gray bar(the bar flickers a lot at the last), keyboard ctrl-alt-del will reboot. I had used noapic and acpi=off before, but does not help now. Intel graphics, at first a flash about address collision.
I have a slight problem with setting of a stylus in my Tecra m7. It works fine when screen is in default position, but when I rotate the screen to vertical (left/CCW) touchpad and stylus input does not change so when I move it up it it goes right ^^'

I already tried few .sh's from this forum archives but it didn't seem to work. I disabled driver for graphic card, because recommended version showed only violet screen when starting system and older version does not support rotation. I use Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.
I have a Toshiba Portege M205-S810 tablet. This computer has a usb cd-rw/dvd-rom drive only. I have a 160 gb HD with 2 partitions. The first contains Windows 7 (I can't remove this, it has all my school stuff), and the second partition is empty.
I downloaded the KDE LiveCD version of 11.2, and the MD5 was correct. I burned the image to a cd via imgburn, and the write was verified.
I want to install OpenSUSE 11.2 onto the 2nd partition. I restart my computer, get into the BIOS, and enable boot from cd-rom. I restart again, the drive spins a bit, and then the windows 7 start screen appears. I'm not sure why this is happening, and would appreciate getting this installed on my 2nd partition.
I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The computer has already Windows 7 installed on the C drive whereas there's a D hidden drive with a copy of the recovery image. I'm having trouble to install openSuSE 11.3 as follows: I boot the system with the DVD in its drive. After the welcome screen the process stops using the typical GUI interface and runs a less graphical one. It is at this point where a window pops up with a request:
"Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive" I press OK but the window keeps popping up. Frustrated I hit Back and a red window comes up with the message: "No repository found." I cannot go any further than this point. It's obvious that the system does not seem to be able to detect the DVD.

I have dell B130 with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and I like it. I recently purchased a new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6033. I've been trying for about 24 hours to get Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on this computer, but to no avail. I've seen some people say that they get error messages. When the cd loads up, it comes to the main page (run ubuntu off disk, install ubuntu, check for errors, etc.) Anyway, when I click to run it off the disk, the scren goes blank. The CD spins, but nothing happens from then on. I've tried a 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04, but the same thing happens. Just for experimentation, I tried xPud on it, and xpud works fine.
