Oct 8, 2010I have a Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop with a resolution of 1024 X 768 and a Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 TE/6200 TE graphics adapter build in, on to which I want to add an external Dell E196FP monitor with a resolution of 1280 X 1024 pixels. I have installed the Nvidia VIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 173.14.22 driver and X server application, but when I go in to the application by "System" -> "Monitors" I get the following message: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?", to which I answer yes.
In here, I go to "X Server display configuration", and "Detect displays". Here both displays (the Dell and the build-in Toshiba) is shown, but I do not know what setting to chose under "Configure", where I have 3 options:Disabled Separate X screen TwinView I want the same screen image on both displays - almost like a projector, but I can for the life of me not get it to work.

Oct 17, 2009Not new to CentOS, which I've installed on a few servers. I'm trying to turn a very old laptop (11 years ?), Toshiba Tecra 540cdt (with the latest available BIOS), into a home server. It runs Windows 2000 fine, and was earlier running some Mandriva versions. I'm trying a multi-boot install, from CD1of6. It does boot from the CD, then shows:

Loading vmlinuz...
Loading initrd.img...
then reboots, and goes through the same cycle.
I switched the hard disk, same result. I have problems too if I try to install the latest Knoppix. An older Knoppix, 5.1 with kernel 2.6.19, will boot.

Apr 21, 2011It feels like it is a keyboard problem because the symptoms always show after pressing a key.
In most instances, a line I am typing in "gedit" at the correct place in the text is unexpectedly continued a few lines downward even though no arrow key has been pressed. In another instance, I click "new thread" in Linuxquestions, a new window opens asking for a title, after entering the title I click "Click Here to Find Similar Threads", a new smaller window opens on top of the existing one and shows the existing options but as soon as I select (click on) one of these options, the main Linuxquestions window disappears and there is no option of "going back" to it and no "back" button to click.
If the keyboard needs cleaning, how do I do that? I found a few cleaning hints about separate keyboards but nothing about laptops.
Ubuntu Installation :: On Clean Install Of 10.04 Thunderbird 3 Hangs On Laptop Toshiba Tecra S1?
May 16, 2010I have a problem with Thunderbird 3 on Ubuntu 10.04. When starting TB3 the 'mail account setup' box appears but can't type anything inthere... I can close the setup box... the main window is very unresponsive but cosing works also immediately. I fisrst did upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 having the problem. Thinking the upgrade might have gone wrong I did a complete fresh install on that laptop, even verified the CD with md5sum before installing. After the fresh and clean install the problem remains the same.
The machine having the problem is a Toshiba laptop Tecra S1 with 1GB of RAM. I do not experience any other problem with Ubuntu 10.04 on that machine, everything else runs like a charm, there also was no error during installation... I think this problem is related to the Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop because other machines I own don't have problems with TB3.

Jan 3, 2011I installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.
Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.

Mar 29, 2010I've been trying to get it to work on my laptop off and on for several years now, experimenting first with Redhat (version 6.1, I think) and now trying with Ubuntu 9.04. I've done a full install using the entire hard drive (no dual boot). So I'm trying it for real this time. I'm having a problem with my video drivers. The video is ok (not great) and I don't seem to have any options to adjust it.
When I go into system > preferences > display, I see monitor "unknown", set at 1024x768 with a 75 Hz refresh. If I click on "detect monitors" nothing happens. It says under system > administration > hardware drivers that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've got two options:

For the first part of boot, I have access, but then when it comes up into Ubuntu, the big monitor (a Dell 2500, I think, plugged into the stock Toshiba docking station via DVI) quits working, and all I have is a dim picture (dark, like something's sapping power from it) on the laptop display.....

May 12, 2011I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my brother's Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 and have spent all day trying to get the wireless to work.
the laptop does not have a physical wifi-switch (it should switch on-off with Fn+F8, which doesn't work), the drivers seem to be installed, but I cannot 'enable wireless', and I found that it is 'Hard blocked':
sudo rfkill list all :

but 'rfkill unblock all' does nothing.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Wireless Works On Live Cd Not After Install Intel 3945 Toshiba Satellite A105
Jul 3, 2011Wireless worked fine on live cd, but for some reason not after install. I think maybe the driver is not loading, but I am a pretty much still a noob, so my opinion isn't worth much. If it is the driver not loading, I don't know what to do to fix it. Here is my wireless output information.

Ubuntu Networking :: Toshiba NB505 Wireless Won't Connect
Feb 14, 2011getting the wireless chipset (Realtek 8176) to work, but finally got the WLAN to show up. Now, it seems as though it will recognize my WLAN and SSID, ask for my WPA password, but never connect. I connect fine over wired ethernet. It will not connect wirelessly to an unsecured network either. I previously had Jolicloud installed on my netbook, and my wireless worked out of the box with no setup, but I really didn't like the lack of application support with Jolicloud. I ended up in dependency hell just trying to update Banshee for use with my iPod.

May 2, 2011I recently bought a Toshiba Portege R835 and wanted to install Ubuntu on it. I wasn't too surprised that the wireless wasn't working, but what does bother me is that Ubuntu doesn't even recognize that I have a wireless card. I haven't installed Ubuntu you (10.04) because of this, however I am able to get online through a wired connection.

Nov 28, 2010I've been having a lot of trouble connecting to my Wireless Router. It worked fine when I had XP on it, so it's not the actual inbuilt WLAN. I put in the correct password, it's MAC address is registered on the router, yet it will constantly query me for a password despite it being put in correctly. I've tried searching the forums for any similar issues, and their concurrent fixes.

Feb 1, 2011I have a toshiba a15 s127. it didn't have a wireless card so i ordered one and installed it myself. however, my computer is not seeing the wireless card and i don't know what driver i need because the card itself didn't come to me in a box, so i am not sure what brand it is. All i know is that it is an original part.
On another note, when i go to network settings and try to config my wireless settings, i do not know what number to put in the BSSID field. (thinking i use the wireless card's MAC address, but ?) and don't know if i use the wireless card's MAC adress or the wireless router's MAC address or the Modem's MAC address in the actual field for the MAC address. ( i know, i know, i sound totally clueless--well, i am!) {note: the wired network works fine.}
How do i get my computer to see the wireless card and how do i configure my computer once it does see the card?

I have installed the proper realtek driver and done modprobe for the device to no avail. In Additional drivers nothing shows except for my ATI drivers.

Ubuntu Networking :: Random Wireless Disconnects - 9.1/Toshiba/Intel 3945abg?
Feb 22, 2010I have my laptop dual booted between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I randomly lose connection to the wireless network. It always works fine when I first boot into Ubuntu but after a while my wireless connection will go down. The signal strength meter will go to zero bars and the black popup message will appear that my wireless connection has disconnected. At first, if I just wait a bit, the connection will come back. However, after about 4 or 5 times of doing this it will then ask me for my password, and inputting the password does not reconnect me to the AP. I am finally forced to reboot. Then it works OK for a while again and the cycle repeats.
It works fine in Windows7 all day, every day. I have the Release Candidate of Windows7 so it's going to expire soon. I would really prefer to make Ubuntu my everyday OS on this laptop rather than pay for a Windows7 license but I cannot tolerate a flaky wireless connection.
I had 8.1 on this laptop at one point and I never had any problems with the wireless then, that I can remember. I had no Ubuntu for a while but then I came back with the 9.1 and was loving it until the wireless problem reared it's ugly head.

Jan 25, 2011I cant seem to understand what happens to my wifi networking, i just installed ubuntu 10.10 today (completely erasing windows) on my toshiba satellite m645. Seems like my wireless card (the specs say its intel 802.11a/g/n wireless LAN) will only randomly detect the available networks or will connect only for a few seconds just after i just turned it on, then it will disconnect.

May 30, 2011I am a linux newbie trying to get the wifi setup on my Toshiba Portege R835. It is running an Intel WiMAX/Wifi Link 6050 Series (rev 5f) wifi card, and I am running ubuntu 10.04. From the ui under wireless networks it says "device not ready"
I tried running ifconfig and it only shows lo, but if I do ifconfig -a it shows me a wireless card listed under wlan0. I tried running sudo ifconfig wlan0 up But it gave me an error: SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory I also looked in lib/firmware and do in fact have iwlwifi-6050-5.ucode listed in there. Unfortunately, I am really not sure how to attack the problem from here.
I should also mention that the wired connections also do not work, so anything I need to download has to be downloaded from a windows boot and burned to a CD to transfer (making the problem much more difficult to solve!)
