Fedora 12 works well on my Acer 5920g laptop. However, about 5 minutes after switch-on, the fan comes on. Especially since the sensor output shows the system is still very cool:

Once on, the fan almost never turns off. The system is not loaded at all, almost totally idle according to top.

I have just recently scrapped Grub and switched to LILO installed to the MBR. Here are my questions:Because I installed LILO to the MBR, should I reinstall it to my Slackware root partition (or somewhere else) prior to blowing out the XP partition where, I assume, the MBR is living? Once I repartition my disk for Slackware only and 'Clonezilla back' my root and home partitions, how do I boot into Slackware? Once I successfully boot into Slackware, what do I do with LILO so that my PC boots into Slackware for ever after?

there are really thousands of software to scour around, many of them don't even have rating, I want to know ubuntuforums users'.
I have ubuntu studio 10.10, and I had to reinstall because of video issues, so I just re did it to wipe it clean and start all over with the install. Before, I had the cool effect when I dragged the window from one screen to the next it stretch the window like it was springy, and snapped onto the next monitor.
I have downloaded, compiz and compiz config settings manager as well as emerald theme manager. I selected the 3d cube and wobbly windows, water fx and several other, but the 3d cube doesnt show up as such and the neat snap that I described that I had before, doesnt work either . Right now I have my XFX Radeon HD 5770 vid card prop driver disabled.
Any clues as to why as the website: [URL].. shows that beautiful cube fx in the center of the window, wont occur on my screen? And where did that cool fx go that when I drag the window over to the other screen it's just a basic drag and not the wobbly/stretchy thing?
How do people say a distro is cool .I don't find anything cool in slackware.I did teach me how to connect to internet and I learned some commands .Sorry if i were wrong and I welcome anyone to show the path of how to learn a linux inside out.

If I touch the case near the left speaker and along the top by the screen it is sometimes almost too hot to touch. It gets that hot that when I have shut the MBP down I don't close the lid as I am scared that the hot case will damage the screen when closed together!I'm scared I'm gonna cook the laptop or an egg on it.I've been reading some of the posts regarding this mentioning scripts and being able to alter the fan speeds to hopefully solve this problem. I'm still new to linux and I don't have a problem running or installing scripts but I need the confidence to do it knowing I am not going to cook the laptop.
1, Can someone point me in the right direction with regards to a linux app (gui if possible) that I can run that will show me fan speed and cpu temp also the graphics card temp if possible?
2, What script do I need to run to cool the laptop down?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
i need to install Cool'n'Quiet driver for my CPU? Or, do I need to enable the same from my BIOS? If I enable it in Bios, will my Windows installation will be affected although I'm not using it for general purpose. It's there only for games.

This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?
When booting the system ,"starting system logger : Failed" after that i login to the system as usual but the system logger cannot start,even i use the service syslog restart command,how can i solve such problem ,thanks a lot

How does one access a Virtual Box installed Fedora system? I'd like to be able to ssh into this system (locally) but I've no idea how to do this. There is an ip address of 10.0.2.15. Ping doesn't work (ping 10.0.2.15). Should I just go ahead and assign a 192. address to this box before I go any further? It would seem that at this point the system isn't actually a part of my local network and I don't imagine it would be unless it has a 192 address.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
I'm brand new to Fedora. I ran the live cd and installed Fedora. I then installed OpenSUSE and Mint. When Mint formated the hard drive, Fedora wasn't in the graphic, even though sda1 was ext4 and sda3 was lvm2. When Mint rebotted, Mint and OpenSUSE were on the menu, but Fedora wasn't.
