View 1 Replies View RelatedFedora 12 works well on my Acer 5920g laptop. However, about 5 minutes after switch-on, the fan comes on. Especially since the sensor output shows the system is still very cool:

Once on, the fan almost never turns off. The system is not loaded at all, almost totally idle according to top.
I'm trying to install new themes on ubuntu but it tells me that GTK + themes 'ubuntulooks'is not installed and won't load up the themes as it should. I went to package manager and installed it but still doesn't work. Themes to be installed, either overglossed or sickness-black. environment ubuntu 10.04.

However, I can't see to find my newly installed wallpapers. It says they're installed, but they don't show up under wallpapers. Has anyone seen this before?

My HP Mini 1000 had to be factory reset and that means no more Windows XP on the machine until I can figure out how to install it via USB flash. The machine comes with, from what I can figure out, a modified version of ubuntu.
What I wanted to do was to change away from this iphone-like default GUI but I cannot find any menu options to change the theme (System > Preferences > Theme) There is nothing like that anywhere on the computer as far as I can tell. Nothing. The OS help file even says to go to these menus, but they do not exist.
Does anyone have any knowledge that may be helpful here? Am I going to have to install a completely fresh OS? Surely there is a way to switch themes...
I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons. Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another? Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince of late "Appearance preference" behaves awkwardly . Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.
I just recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a new desktop and I have immediately begun to have issues. Within 10 minutes of installation, I had begun to look around to change the window 'theme' settings. I was scrolling through the themes and BOOM the system blanks out and forces me back to the login. At first I was thinking it was no big deal, but as it turns out, it will not let me back it.Basically, I use my credentials, it appears to login, it goes to a black screen with the cursor at the top left and then sends me back to login like nothing happened.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on a External HDD (320GB Samsung S2). Worked like a charm. Bit slow to boot up and load programs, but after a while, works great. I installed it on the external HDD for one purpose: Work anywhere with Ubuntu, no matter which computer I use. I was thinking that was impossible, but I've tested thru several platforms (3 Notebooks, 2 netbooks, all Intel and one AMD Desktop). All worked flawlessly (32 Bits PAE activated and no matter how many cores are active, just works), BUT the themes. For no apparent reason, themes works on the computer I've installed Ubuntu on the HDD. It has his own Internal HDD with Windows 7 and two NTFS partitions.
Themes are stuck to the default boring-white from Gnome. I can only change the window controls. Compiz works, Wireless works, video works, sound works, filesystem works, system works - themes fail. Feels like I've hit my feet's little finger on a chair. P.S.: Ext. HDD is partitioned like this: 300GB FAT32 (it's my pop's HDD, he wants it this way), 18GB EXT4, 2GB Swap.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu studio 10.10, and I had to reinstall because of video issues, so I just re did it to wipe it clean and start all over with the install. Before, I had the cool effect when I dragged the window from one screen to the next it stretch the window like it was springy, and snapped onto the next monitor.
I have downloaded, compiz and compiz config settings manager as well as emerald theme manager. I selected the 3d cube and wobbly windows, water fx and several other, but the 3d cube doesnt show up as such and the neat snap that I described that I had before, doesnt work either . Right now I have my XFX Radeon HD 5770 vid card prop driver disabled.
Any clues as to why as the website: [URL].. shows that beautiful cube fx in the center of the window, wont occur on my screen? And where did that cool fx go that when I drag the window over to the other screen it's just a basic drag and not the wobbly/stretchy thing?
I'm an internet marketer using Ubuntu. I ran into a problem when I was trying to cloak a website link using instructions for a Windows system. It has to do with changing a .txt document to a .php document and uploading it to a site.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy MBP 5,3 running 64bit 9.10 gets rather hot during use. If I touch the case near the left speaker and along the top by the screen it is sometimes almost too hot to touch. It gets that hot that when I have shut the MBP down I don't close the lid as I am scared that the hot case will damage the screen when closed together!I'm scared I'm gonna cook the laptop or an egg on it.I've been reading some of the posts regarding this mentioning scripts and being able to alter the fan speeds to hopefully solve this problem. I'm still new to linux and I don't have a problem running or installing scripts but I need the confidence to do it knowing I am not going to cook the laptop.
1, Can someone point me in the right direction with regards to a linux app (gui if possible) that I can run that will show me fan speed and cpu temp also the graphics card temp if possible?
2, What script do I need to run to cool the laptop down?
Is that built in? all i can find it the slide thing like in windows

View 4 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
i need to install Cool'n'Quiet driver for my CPU? Or, do I need to enable the same from my BIOS? If I enable it in Bios, will my Windows installation will be affected although I'm not using it for general purpose. It's there only for games.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYou know, the really simplistic one where all you have is your files, folders, menu and a bar at the bottom with your normal filename/size/other jazz and the handy navigation button thingy? I really liked it, I swear when I went from Ubuntu to Fedora back in the F10 days I thought that was one of the coolest things.

I tried hard so that I can stay away from version control but in almost good job specifications, I find version control as requirement. So I thought I had to start from somewhere. I always tried to read it but haven't got much luck with it. So I have few problems to ask. I am confused and I really want to know how can I use version control in my context and how will my working environment change with it.
I have Linux VPS Server. I use capnel/whm to create sites in php/joomla. So is version control a software or script which I can install on my linux box like ./configure. Or I have to install it on every site like any framework I use Dreamweaver to edit files via FTP. Now if I install version control then do I still use same method to edit files or then method gets chnaged What about the database like MySQL will it stays same or its also version controlled Will version control make my system slow and how much space it uses on my server.
