Does something like this exist?[URL]..I don't like much the default alt+tab application switcher. I would like to delete the bottom panel and leave only the upper menu. I would like an alt+tab app switcher similar to that one, icons instead preview of windows plus icons, and when there are windows group show them in the arrow. Then colors, for example blue for the window where you are and yellow if the window wants to highlight due a change or something.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Linux (Arch Linux with KDE) and Mac, and one of the things I really miss in Linux is OS X's application switcher: one keyboard shortcut (by default Cmd-Tab) switches between applications, and a different one (by default Cmd-`) switches between windows of the application you're currently using. For instance, to switch from Firefox to Terminal I would use Cmd-Tab, and to switch between multiple Terminal windows I'd use Cmd-`.
In KDE, at least, the default behavior is simply to switch between any open windows when you use Alt-Tab. Can anyone recommend an application switcher that would provide Mac-like functionality? Or perhaps a window manager that would do so?
Is there a way to restore only the application switcher from metacity when using compiz?I generally like compiz on, but there is not an application switcher within compiz that provides the usability of the standard metacity switcher. They are fine when you have only a few windows open, but if you are running many apps (some of them with multiple windows) it becomes quite hard to identify the app you want.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAny of you ever heard of OS/2 WARP? My dad is a longtime user, as was I until I got my Mac (and now my netbook with Ubuntu). In any case, the OS is a tad...obsolete and my dad at some point wishes to try Ubuntu. In his current setup, he has a "Window List" that can be activated using a keyboard shortcut. It's a popup (not in a menu bar or "panel") that can be moved around and resized. From that you can use your keyboard to navigate to the program or window that you want. For instance, if I want to get to Firefox, I press Ctrl+Escape (to activate the Window List) and then I hit "F" as many times as needed to highlight "Firefox". Then I just hit "Enter" and I'm there. Anything similar out there for Ubuntu (it is preferable if the solution has text as well as icons or else can have the icons removed leaving only the text)
In addition, both him and I would be interested in some program for launching/switching to programs using keyboard shortcuts. On the Mac, I use Quicksilver for this, where it actually Launches the program if it's not open, and switches to it if it is. However, Gnome Do unfortunately lacks this functionality and I have no way to do it off the top of my head.
i'm using a 64 bit system. i'm running cube deformation with cylinder.i am unable to make my cube caps transparent.i've deleted the original cap settings.i have also attempted to log out and in again to see if it would change.also.....my mouse is not changing to it's new pointer when i'm active in compiz.when compiz is off my mouse change is set, when it is on it stays as the white pointer unless i'm on firefox.

I am also looking for a video editor, any suggestions?
there are really thousands of software to scour around, many of them don't even have rating, I want to know ubuntuforums users'.
I have ubuntu studio 10.10, and I had to reinstall because of video issues, so I just re did it to wipe it clean and start all over with the install. Before, I had the cool effect when I dragged the window from one screen to the next it stretch the window like it was springy, and snapped onto the next monitor.
I have downloaded, compiz and compiz config settings manager as well as emerald theme manager. I selected the 3d cube and wobbly windows, water fx and several other, but the 3d cube doesnt show up as such and the neat snap that I described that I had before, doesnt work either . Right now I have my XFX Radeon HD 5770 vid card prop driver disabled.
Any clues as to why as the website: [URL].. shows that beautiful cube fx in the center of the window, wont occur on my screen? And where did that cool fx go that when I drag the window over to the other screen it's just a basic drag and not the wobbly/stretchy thing?
My MBP 5,3 running 64bit 9.10 gets rather hot during use. If I touch the case near the left speaker and along the top by the screen it is sometimes almost too hot to touch. It gets that hot that when I have shut the MBP down I don't close the lid as I am scared that the hot case will damage the screen when closed together!I'm scared I'm gonna cook the laptop or an egg on it.I've been reading some of the posts regarding this mentioning scripts and being able to alter the fan speeds to hopefully solve this problem. I'm still new to linux and I don't have a problem running or installing scripts but I need the confidence to do it knowing I am not going to cook the laptop.
1, Can someone point me in the right direction with regards to a linux app (gui if possible) that I can run that will show me fan speed and cpu temp also the graphics card temp if possible?
2, What script do I need to run to cool the laptop down?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
i need to install Cool'n'Quiet driver for my CPU? Or, do I need to enable the same from my BIOS? If I enable it in Bios, will my Windows installation will be affected although I'm not using it for general purpose. It's there only for games.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYou know, the really simplistic one where all you have is your files, folders, menu and a bar at the bottom with your normal filename/size/other jazz and the handy navigation button thingy? I really liked it, I swear when I went from Ubuntu to Fedora back in the F10 days I thought that was one of the coolest things.

How do people say a distro is cool .I don't find anything cool in slackware.I did teach me how to connect to internet and I learned some commands .Sorry if i were wrong and I welcome anyone to show the path of how to learn a linux inside out.

Maverick 10.10
I believe these are bugs or omissions.
When using the Workspace switcher you can no longer drag an application from one screen (workspace) to another. I like to use 8 different screens to avoid clutter.
You also were allowed on the Preferences menu to change the default name of the workspace from "workspace 1" to just "1".
Before Maverick you could hover the mouse over a workspace and the name would appear. Now the only things that appears is workspace 1 without regard for whatever workspace you are on.
To me an omission of a necessary or important feature is a Bug. If this was done by design than it is a design bug.
I notice that by default there is only 4 workspaces available on Natty Narwhal. Can I get more as I could with 10.10?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty sure I saw this described on this board, with a screenshot, but I simply can't find anything about it: A window switcher (probably a compiz plugin) that displays a 3D view of all windows lying flat on a receding surface, with the selected one flipping up upright.
I assumed it was built in to compiz, but when I went to look it was not any one of the ones I can find in ccsm - must be a separate package. And by then I had closed the post.
I have accidentally deleted the Panel in KDE. What is the window / task switcher called and how do I add it to the panel,

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Natty(unity as desktop) since the beta now and it is really growing on me except for the workspaces. Is there a way to see what workspace I am on? *When typing I usually switch with ctrl-alt-"left/right/up/down" but after some work i don't always know what desktop i am one so switching is usually trial and error jumping from desktop to desktop or pressing super-s to get an overview. Seeing which desktop I'm on (maybe in the unity workspace button) would help with that.
*When just using the mouse I used to click on the workspace launcher and I would be on the desktop of my choice in one click but now I need to click on the switcher, identify where I am and where I need to go and it breaks the flow of fast switching, its no advantage anymore compared to just opening all programs on 1 workspace and using super-w I guess there are upcoming changes on the switcher as unity is still in its infancy so is there a way to put the old switcher in the top panel again?
I recently fixed a problem i had with Ubuntu which was the missing title bars but as soon as i enabled them on Compiz, my Desktop switcher app will not work. I've tried removing it and re-applying it but this does not solve the problem. Its there, in all its glory, but i cant click any of the other desktops it seems unresponsive when im left-clicking it but it responds and works fine showing blips of what it is or even adding or deleting rows and columns is optional.I know this happened immediatly following the compiz change so it has something to do with that and i think it might only have 1 desktop that it knows of because i can highlight desktop 4 and it still says 1, but im probably wrong.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing awn on the right (or left) I cannot get the shiny switcher to allow me to have the desktops in a column - they always stay as a row- I say always - they did show once, but never again. Anyone got any idea as to why? MY search skills appear to be sadly lacking on this one. Tried removing the configs and starting again - no difference.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using the Shift Switcher on Compiz to switch windows. Also i don't use any taskbar to show what apps are open or not. Minimized windows are simply "invisible" as it were. When switching, minimized windows are represented by their icons. Instead i would like to see them as a thumbnail (as with maximized windows). Can i make Compiz do that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been tweeking my gnome setup a lot lately...I have a 14 inch screen on my laptop and decided I didn't need title bars anymore....so I added a bunch new hot keys andinstead of eliminating the title bare, which kills the borders too, I changed the width to a minimum. If I use the window switcher, I can only see the window if that window is not minimized. All one can see is an icon telling you what program that window is using if that window is minimized. It looks great if the window is open on the desktop. Are there any work arounds anyone know s of or better compiz setups I could use ?
