Red Hat / Fedora :: Starting System Logger: Failed After Login To The System
Nov 17, 2010
When booting the system ,"starting system logger : Failed" after that i login to the system as usual but the system logger cannot start, even i use the service syslog restart command, how can i solve such problem ,thanks a lot
I'm having trouble starting Fedora 14 on my computer. The startup procedure freezes while starting system logger. Before this started happening, I had formatted one of my logical disk partitions which is supposed to be mounted under the /var directory. I think may be the cause of this problem. However, I don't know how to fix it, as I can't get into the Linux command line to do a umount. I don't have a CD with which to repair the system, so is there any way to fix this problem without one?
My co-worker install CentOS with /var (ext3) is 1TB:
Code:
I do the following tasks to move sdb1 to VolGroup00:
After that I moved /var back to / folder and reboot but the system hangs at "Starting system logger". Uninstall and re-install sysklogd package don't make any change. What I don't understand is I can start syslogd from command line:
went through the tutorial on FedoraSolved for securing ssh. I installed denyhosts with yum and then tried to run it with the command line command"sudo /etc/init.d/denyhosts start" but I got the message"Job Failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details [FAILED]"and in the application "services" in the applications menu,t shows an exclamation warning and says that "This unit has failed"
I have a problem after upgrade from F13 to F14. I used the DVD i386 Iso on my Netbook MSI Wind U100 but it's don't start. It's load the services and it's stuck in the Fedora logo. I boot into Runlevel 1 to see the logs but there is no error. Then I run init 5 and it's stuck after the service ATD load. I don't want to do a clean install.
I want to set up a web server, and I want to set up NTP so to always keep the clock in sync. I have installed a very basic system (No GUI or X components), to keep it slim and thereby a little less prone to security problems. However, does anybody know what the Synchronize system clock before starting option in system-config-date actually does in terms of changing config files or permissions? I'd like to know so I can do it manually via the commandline.
I've followed this guide [URL] after rebooting the system hang at: starting ati external events daemon [OK] This line start blinking for a while, then nothing happen. I am using a radeon hd 4225. (I'm booting with acpi=off).
Wondering if any know of a program that I can use to make an exact image of my fedora 13 operating system and transfer it to my new hard drive. I want to upgrade the hard drive and reinstall the exact system from the original drive to my new one, without starting from scratch. Just wondering if there's a program for Fedora 13 like Norton Ghost.
I hace two fedora 12 systems running currently and both are giving this error upon update..
Error Type: <class 'yum.Errors.RepoError'> Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in <module>
I had F10. Today the system suggested to upgrade to F11. In the middle of upgrade (during the installation of files) my computer had frozen for a 10-15 min. I rebooted it. Nothing is working now. I can not boot F10 and upgrade F11 does not want to continue.
After I login as root, it displays the MOTD and shuts down. During the bootup process it says that Runlevel is set to 0. I checked through init and inittab, the runlevel was still 3. I didn't think this would be it because I'm already logging in, but I figured I'd try. I went through rc.sysinit, rc.local, shadow and profile and I cannot find a reason for it.
I'm using Fedora 9 and I recently transferred my hard drive to a new laptop. Everything went smoothly except the wireless, which promptly broke. I played around with the network service and the NetworkManager service and chkconfig stuff and system-config-network, until I finally got it to work. Now I have wireless, but every time I shut down, I get some error-like messages:
"ipw2200: Failed to send SYSTEM_CONFIG: Already sending a command." repeating every second for about 3 or 4 seconds before it finally does shut down.
These also appear in dmesg, usually about 20 in a row, thus my concern. My wireless device's interface is eth3. How to get rid of this message while still keeping wireless connectivity.
When I try to mount the disk from my client machine I get the error: Code: [tim@localhost ~]$ sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.10:/media/cavern /media/cavern mount.nfs mount system call failed
Thinking the problem might be due to iptables I tried the following command as recommended by a book I found on google: Code: sudo iptables -A INPUT -i wlan0 -f -j ACCEPT didn't help so tried disabling the firewall - still getting the error Both machines are running FC11 - should i be using nfs4?
i'm working on a brand new supermicro workstation with Fedora 9 installed. I've installed only matlab r2009b. PROBLEM: every time I login the system shuts down automatically in a few minutes.
I was trying to update software and it told me to log out and login again. When I tried to login it told that there is a problem and I need to log out and to login again and it kept repeating the message and fedora is not working at all and before that it wasn't working right it kept suspending without reason and each time I turn the laptop off from the power button.
I upgraded my Fedora Core distribution from 12 to 14. Everything worked fine, except for SQUID which refused to upgrade. I then went to rescue and installed SQUID using yum and then restarted the upgrade. It did finally upgrade the system and then asked for a reboot. Well, when I selected the new kernel option in the GRUB options, since I also have Winduhs, it gave a kernel panic. I tried booting into the older kernel and it worked. Now I see the users that are there in the system in the Graphical GUI login greeter screen. But none of the users get authenticated. I used the rescue option and removed graphical login and changed boot level to 3. I also enabled the root user. In the rescue mode, if I do a startx, everything works fine.
I logged off rebooted the system. When I login, I see the version is shown as Fedora Core 14, but the kernel was still the older one with Core 12. I again went to rescue and checked out GRUB and saw that it had no initrd for the new kernel. I created a initrd image with the mkinitrd command and then added it to grub. I again rebooted. This time it shows the correct kernel, but still the system does not allow any of the users to login. All the Logins fail. I have tried going to rescue and going to the system using 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' and doing a startx for Graphical. Everything works, but only with the Rescue mode in the DVD. The normal boot/login sequence does not work.
Incidentally when I do a 'yum distro-sync', I get something like this :
---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-9.20080819.fc12 set to be downgraded ---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-11.20100428.fc14 set to be erased ---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-1.fc12 set to be downgraded ---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-2.fc14 set to be erased ---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-25.fc12 set to be downgraded ---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-29.fc14 set to be erased
It still seems to believe its a Fedora Core 12 system. Another information is that when I leave rescue mode and do a normal boot without installation media, it starts doing some SELinux relabelling and reboots. Any pointers on how I can get the system working. I am able to work with the rescue mode way, with any user, as it does not ask for any password. I can even do startx and work on the GUI. All my data is also there. I just am unable to get the user authenticated using normal boot/login. I have tried using passwd -d username, but it gives an error : passwd: libuser initialization error: could not open configuration file `/tmp/libuser.ElY0r9': No such file or directory In fact, I am now in rescue mode only when I am writing and sending this.
When booting Fedora 11, my system hangs for a very long time on starting udev. Sometimes I get an I/O error. However, my hardware is fine. I do eventually get in to the system.
My fedora 11 (2.6.30-102) spends a long time while initializing services on

Auth is LDAP.
There's a 3.5 years old bug in redhat bugs database, that's still not resolved, regarding dbus trying to use ldap auth, before ldap service is started.Workaround is to change ldap config to soft binding.
3.5 years for a bug that affect enterprise users - are you there redhat?
i,m using Fedora11 since some time.... to day i hav updated my system but after updation, im unable to login my system through Gnome, but i can login by KDE as usual. now there is another problem i can,t login system throgh root account although i can access root account through terminal
For a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.
I took little real threat by the offense.
(1) my system does not allow root to login and
(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.
fast forward
Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.
Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?
I've trouble with booting up xubuntu koala: When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).
Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.
The question - before searching and reading - was "how is it done? (see subject)"The question now is - "am I interpreting it correctly?"It seems that basically 3 things need to be done:place a copy of the startup script in /etc/init.d;in rc?.d, define symbolic links to the startup script run chkconfig or insserv to activate the script.
I have a HP mini 5101 wit OpenSuse 11.2. Unfortunately, I wanted to have a newer version 11.3, but I upgraded in a wrong way and the system not started any more, failed in start-up level 5 and ran the Kernel. I tried to find the solution, searched on google, but I think made it worse (personal feeling): made some changes in xconfig. Of course, the problem remained. Then I decided to make a system recovery. Everything was OK, until the last step, when the system prepared the first login. I saw this message for a few seconds:
Code: *** Starting Yast2 *** basename: missing operand Try 'basename --help' for more information SPP: could not open file: at /usr/share/sax/modules/SPPParse.pm line 61 When I switch on my netbook, during the loading everything seems ok, after loading I see the background but no login window, nothing. I don't know what's the problem. I started the system recovery again and again. In few times I saw this on screen for a second, then return the background: [Code]...
I just recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu + KDE and I can't for the life of me find a suitable 'msconfig' replacement. My issue in particular is with the 'krunner' process which I want to replace with 'synapse', but I just can't seem to find where to disable 'krunner' from starting up with the system. The 'Autostart' module in 'System settings' shows nothing. Also 'Pidgin' and 'Cairo-dock' start with the system and I can't find where this information is located. I'd like two things: a way to easily manage applications and services running when the system starts up, and a way to prevent the 'krunner' process from starting up again.
I'm unhappy with Microsoft, and Apple has slowly lost its appeal due to unsolvable problems with my iMac G5. Are there any especially good books or hints about how to start for
1. buying a system with Linux on it 2. Using either an iMac or another machine that I can install Linux on it 3. low cost ways of getting Linux systems
i try to write a script to start and stop jboss service from remote systems. starting and stopping jboss service is working fine on local system. when i try to start jboss service from remote system . i not able to start jboss service.
I'm hoping someone can help me out.I made configurations changes to/etc/pam.d/system-auth and /etc/pam.d/login. When these files are configured the way they are, I can't login and/or I can't login in the GUI interface and a terminal. Contents of /etc/pam.d/login
