View 2 Replies View RelatedHere's the scenario: Changing themes in ubuntu used to be a pretty straight forward process that almost anyone could do with basic tools. basically you downloaded the sound you wanted and went to system/preferences/sound and changed the event you wanted to change to the new sound. Ubuntu 9.10 comes along and throws a major wrench in the works. Sure sound preferences is still there, but there's no way to select a specific sound event to change. in fact the only thing you can do is select a sound theme or choose an event sound. there is no way to change the selected theme. The only way i've come across to change a theme is manually. I'll use the starcraft theme available on [URL]. First off download the file and save it on your desktop. Next it needs to be extracted to a specific location. For systemwide use "/usr/share/sounds" as root and for local user only use "/home/username/.local/share/sounds" username being your home folder. I'm not going to go into specifics on how to extract files where there's plenty of info readily available on how to do that. Once you've extracted the sound theme you can go to system/preferences/sound and click on the dropdown menu and select starcraft and that will change the system sounds. now say for instance that you want to make your own custom sound theme. if you look in the starcraft folder you'll see a sound folder and an index.theme file. the sound folder contains all the sounds for the theme and the index.theme references those files. use gedit to open index.theme
you'll see:
[Sound Theme]
Name=StarCraft
Directories=stereo
[stereo]
OutputProfile=stereo
[Code].....
That's essentially where i'm at. my question is for the other events that i can't figure out. is there a way to list events that can be associated with sounds things like minimize maximize ect.
I have some sounds I'll like to use for events. Fedora comes with built-in sound themes. Can one create his? How?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?
I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons.Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another?Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.

Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.

View 1 Replies View RelatedCan anyone recommend a really cool music player (like real player equivalent of Linux) and super cool DvD player?
I am also looking for a video editor, any suggestions?
there are really thousands of software to scour around, many of them don't even have rating, I want to know ubuntuforums users'.
I have ubuntu studio 10.10, and I had to reinstall because of video issues, so I just re did it to wipe it clean and start all over with the install. Before, I had the cool effect when I dragged the window from one screen to the next it stretch the window like it was springy, and snapped onto the next monitor.
I have downloaded, compiz and compiz config settings manager as well as emerald theme manager. I selected the 3d cube and wobbly windows, water fx and several other, but the 3d cube doesnt show up as such and the neat snap that I described that I had before, doesnt work either . Right now I have my XFX Radeon HD 5770 vid card prop driver disabled.
Any clues as to why as the website: [URL].. shows that beautiful cube fx in the center of the window, wont occur on my screen? And where did that cool fx go that when I drag the window over to the other screen it's just a basic drag and not the wobbly/stretchy thing?
My MBP 5,3 running 64bit 9.10 gets rather hot during use. If I touch the case near the left speaker and along the top by the screen it is sometimes almost too hot to touch. It gets that hot that when I have shut the MBP down I don't close the lid as I am scared that the hot case will damage the screen when closed together!I'm scared I'm gonna cook the laptop or an egg on it.I've been reading some of the posts regarding this mentioning scripts and being able to alter the fan speeds to hopefully solve this problem. I'm still new to linux and I don't have a problem running or installing scripts but I need the confidence to do it knowing I am not going to cook the laptop.
1, Can someone point me in the right direction with regards to a linux app (gui if possible) that I can run that will show me fan speed and cpu temp also the graphics card temp if possible?
2, What script do I need to run to cool the laptop down?
Is that built in? all i can find it the slide thing like in windows
also, whats the best way right now to get expose?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
i need to install Cool'n'Quiet driver for my CPU? Or, do I need to enable the same from my BIOS? If I enable it in Bios, will my Windows installation will be affected although I'm not using it for general purpose. It's there only for games.

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with Gigabyte GA-k8n51gmf-9 with AMD 64. what is the advantage of Cool'n'Quiet driver.
You know, the really simplistic one where all you have is your files, folders, menu and a bar at the bottom with your normal filename/size/other jazz and the handy navigation button thingy? I really liked it, I swear when I went from Ubuntu to Fedora back in the F10 days I thought that was one of the coolest things.
