Fedora :: Changes In Boot Up Screen
Jan 18, 2010
After the last upgrades I've noticed that when booting up Fedora 12 the blue screen with the ball that fills up and then turns into the Fedora logo has magically changed into the old boot up of the growing line at the bottom of the page the fianlly says Fedora 12 in the lower right hand corner. What's with that? What would make it change? Also when shutting down it says in times roman font "Shutting Down." What caused the change?

I installed Ubuntu with a partition that was too small for any practical use, so I installed it again, thinking it would simply overwrite the other one as Windows would do. Obviously not. Now I have two Ubunto installations, neither of which work. I get a White Screen after the Ubuntu thing that shows its progress. If I try to boot from the CD, the Ubuntu thing works again, then I get a completely garbled screen which is totally unreadable and unuseable. I should also mention that I originally installed with a 19" square flatscreen from HP, but have upgraded to an Acer H233H. Since I have no clue what to do whatsover Ubuntu is just taking up space. I'd like to be able to use it, and I'd like to be able to get rid of one or other of the installations.

I downloaded a bunch of updates with PackageKit, afterwards I had to restart. Now when I did, all I would get is a blank screen, no blinking prompt line or anything. I did a cold boot and the same thing happened. So, I tried it a third time and all is fine. I'm running FC11 and I'm glad everything is back to normal, but what might have caused this in the first place?

Just download F12 and was thinking of installing. But, I was hoping someone could tell me if the start up screen actually works now? I recall it just being a blue bar at the bottom.
Is Plymouth ( I think that is what it is called) working yet? Or do I still have to modify files in order to get it to work?
I realize the above is no reason NOT to install F12, but I am curious anywho I still need more Linux XP points.

fedora 13.I have ran fedora for a little while now and its quite good, a lot more stable than I was led to believe and add/remove tool has a great variety. So today I was booting up and decided to "type" as fedora was booting. The long and the short of this is that fedora stops at this well the bar fills just before nvidia screen/login dialog pops up and freezes there.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

I just installed Fedora 12 earlier today using preupgrade. Everything seems to work alright, but I do have a couple of problems. I've had this happen twice already, but when I'm booting up, my machine will freeze once the Fedora logo is shown right before I get into the login screen. Another problem I've had is when I do boot into KDE I'll see an ! icon next to the clock telling me that there has been a crash in the kernel.
Edit: Update- It only hangs when I reboot. If I restart in windows and try to boot fedora, it hangs, if I restart in Fedora, it will hang after the restart. The only way I can boot Fedora is from a cold boot
Edit: I seemed to have fixed the problem after searching Google for 20 minutes. I just ran this command as root.. #chcon -t system_dbusd_exec_t /bin/dbus-daemon

I have a big LCD screen.I make it 90 degrees retated to play games .But I want to know :if I can get rotation in boot up? I'm using Fedora 12 in KDE. My screen display driver is Intel . I think can write something into /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make it,or write into KDE's init script /usr/bin/startkde ( if there is a command like"rotate 90",then I can write it here).

I just installed the latest updates for Fedora 14, and a restart was necessary so I did. Then, it didn't reboot! It hung when the cursive Fedora "f" was there for about 15 minutes. I had guessed that maybe it was doing an automatic fsck disk check, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I couldn't change to tty2 etc while this was happening and for all I knew, the system was frozen. Is there a way to see the load progress (the text) while booting?
FYI, after 1 extremely slow but eventually successful boot, everything is back to normal with rapid boot times.

I'm a bit of a Linux novice but have taken the plunge and got a old Dell machine set up with Fedora 13, it works fine for the most part. If I can get it to boot. Whenever I start it up the tri-color boot bars go across the screen but seem to freeze at various times. Sometimes right as its getting started, other times it will go all the way across but never actually do anything. I can sometimes get it to work if I get into GRUB and try a different kernel version. Is there anyway to pull up a more informative boot screen or some other way of figuring out whats causing the freeze instead of just watching the progress bar?

I installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my laptop and I guess they are working since World of Warcraft and other graphic dependent programs are working, but the problem is my boot up screen is really ugly now. Instead of the Fedora drop filling up I get a bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up. This happens only after installing the Catalyst drivers how do I change it back to the drop? This is the only issue I'm having.
Fedora 15 x64 is my operating system.

Is there any method to allow multiple users to login to the main server - something like is allowed in windows ?
I am aware of how to telnet/ssh into the machine, but there are some engineering programs which need to be run on the head node (for some display issue problems on the ssh windows), which locks up the head node for another user who might need to log into the machine for their own work.
where I can set it up to permit multiple users to work at the head node without logging off, and instead allow "switch user" or something of the kind ?

I know there's a way to do this, I've seen them in countless installation how-tos, but for the life of me I can't seem to make it work.On my personal machine I have win xp pro & fedora 11-kde dual booted on my #1 320gb hdd.I have win 7 enterprise on the #2 320gb hdd. But I can not get it to work. Have tried using the shift & prt scr keys to make a copy & then pasting it into a text editor on linux or wordpad in windows, but it doesn't take

I am using FC10. how do I change the resolution of the "Boot Up" screen? My monitor is 1024x768 capable but my boot screen is 1280x1024. I don't get anything until it finally loads X Windows. When my machine is booting up I cannot see the screen because my monitor can't handle it. When I hook it up to my other monitor (1280x1024 capable) I can see the boot up screen. I'd like to be able to see the boot screen in case there are any errors I need to se. How do I change it?

After a recent "yum update", my laptop screen locks up during graphical boot. I use rhgb on the kernel line. The container on the screen fills up with charge and then the screen locks. I have to use the power button to reboot. If I press ESC when the boot splash appears (i.e., boot in text mode), it works.
If I set plymouth to "details" mode using
$ plymouth-set-default-theme details --rebuild-initrd
It boots up correctly. This is equivalent to a text boot screen. I doubt whether it is a video driver problem. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and it is working. I also reinstalled plymouth and plymouth-themes-*.

Tried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.

I'm a bit of a nube with Linux. Have had it installed and Acer Veriton for a while but after last yum update it now hangs on the blue screen with the F bubble in the middle. I can login remotely OK but am not sure what to look for. It seems to be something X11 related but I'm not sure. I would post the relevant logs but am not sure which ones are associated with this problem.

It appears that I have really messed up my machine. I was trying to get matlab working on FC 11 and I ran into libc.so.6 issues, so I put an older file libc.2.3.1.so in /lib/tls/ directory and created a symbolic link libc.so.6 to see if the application would work. Unfortunately at the same time the system did some updates and the system hung, so I ended up rebooting, but now it gets stuck at boot screen (after grub) with a kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init.I just need a way to get to the directror /lib/tls and delete the link and the older .so file I threw in there. How do I get this accomplished. I cannot get even to a shell from the boot screen.

I have tried this with many different configurations, however, I believe that the scroll bar that shows the progress of the boot is preventing it from changing successfully. I don't know how to switch it off. X is not installed. No gui, only tui.

Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.

I have installed Fedora 11 and have been using it for about a 4 months now. Everything has been working just fine until this morning when I booted up the computer and it hung at the blue screen with the F bubble in the middle. I waited about 10 minutes without any change to the system. I held down the power button to power off and tried starting the computer again with the same result.
