Fedora :: ATI Catalyst Changed Boot Screen?
Aug 9, 2011
I installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my laptop and I guess they are working since World of Warcraft and other graphic dependent programs are working, but the problem is my boot up screen is really ugly now. Instead of the Fedora drop filling up I get a bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up. This happens only after installing the Catalyst drivers how do I change it back to the drop? This is the only issue I'm having.
Fedora 15 x64 is my operating system.

I recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?
Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.
If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

I just did a fresh install of natty, installed a few programs along with the ati catalyst control center.
I am having serious login issues, here is what I do:
I am at the login screen right from start-up, type in username and passward and hit enter, screen goes blank, it appears I am logging in, ubuntu plays a sound and puts me back at the login screen. I do not get an "Authentication Failed" error like I would expect. Unable to login as myself or as root.
However, I am able to login if I select the "safe mode," I am not able to login under the normal mode or the ubuntu classic modes.
I suspect that this issue has to do with the ati proprietary drivers, after playing with the settings for a while in safe mode I am now able to login to the normal natty mode without any apparent issues.
Here is what I changed in ati catalyst control center to boot into natty mode:
I disabled the Xinerama and Tear Free options.
Under the 3D settings, I selected the "override application setting" for all the 3D settings I could.
I believe I still have some display issues as I am unable to drag windows from one display to another, my mouse is able to move just fine across displays though.
I also found that enabling Xinerama prevented me from logging into the ubuntu and ubuntu classic modes, but I was able to login to the ubuntu with no effects mode.

I installed the new 9.12 cat drivers in the usual way (init 3; rpm -e the old drivers; generate new rpm; rpm -i new drivers; init 5), but instead of starting like I expected, I got a blank screen and what appeared to be a hard lock (keyboard lights don't toggle, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and Ctrl + Alt + F1 don't do anything).
I switched back to radeonhd, but I'd like to get the proprietary drivers working if possible.
The usual listings
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] lsmod | grep fgl
fglrx 2323096 0
[nathan@ebisu ~] modprobe -l | grep fgl
extra/fglrx.ko
Looks like the driver loaded OK...
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] dmesg | grep fgl

On a Karmic desktop with a Radeon 2600 hd video card, my screen goes black for a couple of seconds when opening an avi (divx or mjpeg). The video starts playing immediatly but I only see a black screen. Using Movie Player, its a black screen window, using vlc or gmplayer or mplayer ,the all screen goes black. It does not happen if I use the ati open source driver (but then flash full screen crashes...). I just installed the latest ati catalyst (10.2) and the problem remains.....

Just install xubuntu today and I saw the beautiful "xubuntu" loading screen image when the computer boots up. I also see this screen when the laptop shuts down. However after installing the proprietary Catalyst drivers for my laptop, that boot image was replaced with just a plain text "XUBUNTU 11.04" and a few lines of text. It looks ugly everytime I boot the laptop.

I have been learning about Ubuntu since 8.10. I have my two computers running dual boot (W7 + 8.04 & Vista + 9.10).
Sorry if this is a noob question, but I have noticed that each time there's a new kernel (now I have 2.6.31.16-generic), the grub OS selection screen adds 2 lines:
- One for the new kernel
- One for the new kernel - recovery mode
So, since I installed Karmic (2.6.31.14) Ubuntu Update has added 4 rows and shows code...
What is the rationale behinf this?
Why would I want to boot using the previous kernel versions?
In my laptop, it's GRUB 2. How can I eliminate the unused options?

That's a picture of my ubuntu 9.1 64bit login screen. The background image I changed myself months after this problem started, so I'm sure that has nothing to do with it. What I DID do that caused this problem was follow the openoffice dark theme fix on this page:[URL]
BACKGROUND: I installed a dark theme that made the openoffice word page black, so I had to find a fix for it on the page above. I'm not using the theme anymore, but it was "Slickness black" on gnomelooks.
In case someone didn't see a problem with the orginal login screen, the section where you click the username and enter your password should look like this:
Also incase anyone was going to ask, my login DID look like the second picture at one point (before the openoffice fix) I just removed openoffice completely and reinstalled it so that isn't the solution.

I've been using Ubuntu for about two years now, then suddenly today (after my PC accidently lost power) the screen resolution changed to 800x600 (it is, in fact, a widescreen monitor, and this resolution looked 'zoomed in'). The only two resolutions detected with xrandr were in the 4:3 ratio (800x600 and something worse). I followed some instructions, trying to reset the resolution to 1024x576.
I got as far as
$ xrandr --newmode "1024x576" ...
then,
$xrandr --addmode default 1024x576
but when I
$xrandr --output default --mode 1024x576
I a message to the effect of 'your screen can only support 800x600 or less'. Ah-ha, I thought, you stupid machine; this screen has had a greater resolution for over a year.
And so, from System->Preferences->Monitor, I forced the computer to switch to this new resolution. When prompted, I reset.
My current problem is that when I turn the computer on, the monitor displays a floating 'Input Not Supported' sign. I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd, and now all 'xrandr' and 'cvt' commands return:
Can't Open Display
My first priority is to get the computer back to it's less-broken 800x600 state;
EDIT: I'm running Ubuntu 10.04

I have installed 2D Unity 11.04 on an old desktop PC. This afternoon I tried a newly burnt Fedora 15 disk just to see if Gnome 3 would run (no luck, better graphics needed, started in Fallback Mode). Anyway I tried the live Fedora disk out for a while then ejected it and rebooted to restart Natty. I was surprised to see the Grub screen now has an earth/space theme background with Debian logos. What happened to the default purple background? Natty booted as normal and I have not installed Fedora to the hard drive.

I tried adjusting the resolution in Ubuntu so that it would fit better on my screen. The first one I tried worked ok, but when I tried a higher resolution the screen went black. Now I can't see anything on the screen so I can't change the resolution back to where it was. If I hit esc when booting up, is there anything I can do that will change it back to the default?

I changed may graphic card, earlier I used NVIDIA FX5500 with nvidia driver, now I was trying to use ATI Radeon 7500, but there are problems with graphic configuration. At first attempt server started but after I changed a screen resolution the monitor went blank. I restarted a computer but after the X server started immediately the monitor wnet blank. I found that for completely for me unknown reasons Xorg was trying to use an NVIDIA glx module with radeon driver. I removed this nvidia driver, I expected ubuntu would be able automatically to set up a proper configuration, but instead of ubuntu complained about a missing driver. I also tried manually to set up some basic config using Xorg -configure but after that the Xorg server was stuck.

I have been using ubuntu 10.04 64 bits for about 3 month. Today I change my keyboard layout, so I want to test if everything is ok so I reboot my computer. When I try to reboot everything is as usual but the problem is that after grub. Nothing only a black screen no matter what i do. I doubt the keyboard layout change something but who knows. I run AMD phenom 940 X 4, 4 gig ram, Ati radeon HD 4870.

While I was away from my computer a friend changed my keyboard layout to a random layout thinking he could revert it via mouse actions only. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, my screen was locked. Now I cannot unlock my session to get back in to the KDE session to restore the correct keyboard layout.
However, I can log in to a console. In the console (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-F1), the keyboard layout is unchanged, so I can edit any text files and make any other changes required. How can I change the KDE keyboard layout from a console? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04. There is no .kderc file in my home directory. And Xorg.conf doesn't contain the settings either. I'm not sure where else to look.

I've recently installed a Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, but it currently doesn't have support from any open source drivers (including MESA's experimental DRI drivers). The only other option would be ATI's Catalyst drivers, but 9.12 doesn't support Xorg 7.5 at the moment (the drivers disable Xorg; leaving a terminal only setup).
The question I've got is that is it possible to downgrade Xorg to 7.4 as a temp workaround and if so, how easy would it be to revert back to 7.5 afterwards.

I just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.

I tried to use Start-Up Manager to changed back to Ubuntu but Xubuntu xsplash screen ( one with the fire flies ) still comes up. Is their any way to change this back to the Ubuntu Splash Screen without the Xubuntu screne coming up at all ??
