I have a HIS 4670 display card with my asus p5kpl-am board running fedora 12 after installing the driver downloaded from the official site, fedora cant boot into the login screen.so i uninstalled the driver in single user mode then everyhing back to normal.does anyone knows wht was going on?
View 3 RepliesI just installed Fedora 12 earlier today using preupgrade. Everything seems to work alright, but I do have a couple of problems. I've had this happen twice already, but when I'm booting up, my machine will freeze once the Fedora logo is shown right before I get into the login screen. Another problem I've had is when I do boot into KDE I'll see an ! icon next to the clock telling me that there has been a crash in the kernel.
Edit: Update- It only hangs when I reboot. If I restart in windows and try to boot fedora, it hangs, if I restart in Fedora, it will hang after the restart. The only way I can boot Fedora is from a cold boot
Edit: I seemed to have fixed the problem after searching Google for 20 minutes. I just ran this command as root.. #chcon -t system_dbusd_exec_t /bin/dbus-daemon
Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot
HDD: Main: 250GB SATA Western Digital

The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View Relatedi am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

Back then I changed the background to full black for both the preboot screen and login screen.Now after upgrading it changed it to the purple color screen. I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
This happens on boot on Fedora 15. Plymouth Boot Screen just stays there and I can't login. Searching around suggested kmod-nvidia to cause this (one moth ago ofc), but here I am with Intel Graphics and the default drivers.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been running openSUSE 11.2 within a VM using VirtualBox 3.1.2 with Vista x64 as the host OS for quite some time now with good results. Yesterday I went to reboot the VM and VBox made some comment about 3D not working and needing to install the VBox guest additions (which were already installed). After rebooting and seeing the openSUSE splash screen, I now get a solid purplish display with no activity. I've tried running "sax2 -r", re-installing guest additions, running the repair CD, and other things but this problem has not gone away. Aside from reloading the OS, does anyone have ideas on how I might fix this?

I have my router set to wake my server up every monday at 10:00amI want to then have this script run when the computer hits the login screen.... However I only want it to run on that specific day.how would i have it do this. It needs to just rsync to my users home directory.My thoughts: have the script check the day and if it is the right day it executes.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi start up the computer, it loads, it arrives to a screen that says the laptops name, and a bar at the bottum. I can interact with this bar, it is blank and has a picture of a little man with a circle. Clicking on this does nothing, another says shutdown and reset, again clicking on it does nothing. I think the error occured when the computer got unplugged while updating.now before we get into all this GRUB and fancy stuff. I am completely new to linux. I installed this using a cd made from an iso image downloaded from the site. I did not use a windows loader. I don't even have windows anymore. I have all my personal information and data on here and would like it to be restored.I googled it and it says to go to recovery mode using GRUB, don't know how and don't know what grub is.:confus ed:

View 1 Replies View Related10.10 32 bit on a pc with a GForce 9600 GT VGA and P5KPL-SE mainboard.Sometimes, while booting, after the letters on the screen message " booting from hd1..." get thinner, everything stops and I dont get the purple login screen. After switcihng pc off and rebooting, usually, everything is OK. I used proprietary nvidia driver version current and after switching to version 173 (considering that it might had to do with the driver), maybe it somewhat improved things but the problem persists. IT is not that terrible to reboot except for that I use this pc at work and switching it off sometimes starts the disk check for errors utility which lasts long since disk is 1 TBI tried to read dmesg but am not familiar with the terms I show and gave up

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).
In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)
I have used the below command to do that successfully for the previous version of ububunt, but this time I failed to do that with Ubuntu 9.10. I know I can do that manually by "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" command. I try to change the name of /etc/init.d/gdm files, but the problem still exist.m"sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove"

The boot background splash screen comes up very fast, but then it is about a 1 minute wait until the login prompt appears. Then once I enter my login credentials, GNOME loads up ASAP. It wasn't this slow before I reinstalled. Anyone know why this could be? Everything works.

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
How can I boot Debian 6 directly into the desktop without bringing up the login screen or login password?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?
