I'm getting a HDD Lock screen or Disk Controller Failure at boot up. (Compaq Armada) The HDD stops the system dead. The controller failure will allow me to boot Fedora or Puppy from the CD drive.

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).
I just upgraded via preupgrade-cli (from FC10), rebooted, the upgrade process completed, then the system rebooted and I just see a blinking white cursor now.I was able to boot up from a live cd of FC11, but I'm not sure how I can repair the system.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 12 earlier today using preupgrade. Everything seems to work alright, but I do have a couple of problems. I've had this happen twice already, but when I'm booting up, my machine will freeze once the Fedora logo is shown right before I get into the login screen. Another problem I've had is when I do boot into KDE I'll see an ! icon next to the clock telling me that there has been a crash in the kernel.
Edit: Update- It only hangs when I reboot. If I restart in windows and try to boot fedora, it hangs, if I restart in Fedora, it will hang after the restart. The only way I can boot Fedora is from a cold boot
Edit: I seemed to have fixed the problem after searching Google for 20 minutes. I just ran this command as root.. #chcon -t system_dbusd_exec_t /bin/dbus-daemon
I've run the install to hard drive program three times over and each time I get "disk boot failure". I believe I've got Grub to install to the mbr but I am not sure.

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.
The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.
I had a RAID1 'device' build on two physical partitions on two drives. One of the disk controllers died and software RAID did the job - now I am working on the degraded array.
Now I want to put the old disk (sdb) back, and I am not sure what will happen. Both disks have 'raid auto' partitions. And sdb file structure from before of the failure. The raid code will find inconsistency between both partitions. What will it decide? Will it start coping from the currently running system (sda) all the data to the old one (sdb) at the boot time, as I wish?
I don't want to it to write from the old one to the new one, as some months passed and lots of changes happened to the data.
when i try to boot from the disk i burned, the screen show to lines of code, then pauses and never continues with any process.

I have searched around but I can't seem to find anything that works. There is only one hard drive in my computer and no other operating systems on it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 USB drives. I have had 9.04 running on one for some time. I used Disk Creator in 9.04 to 'create' the drive. I use it as a reference to verify how things went in 9.04 if I hit a problem with 9.10.
However, after some months, when I tried this USB drive it produced this 'Boot Failure'. I followed up by checking the other USB drive which had Lubuntu installed via USB Disk Creator and it produced the same result ie 'Boot Failure'.
The Machine bios is set in the correct order.
I have tried to 're-do' things via 'Disk Creator' in 9.10 and 9.04 with the same result. It is not likely that both USB drives have failed at the same time.
Is Grub2 at fault in some way?
After buying a new PC, I decided to "reorganize" my former PC as follows:Initially it has been a dual (SATA) disk dual boot PC- one disk for each OS, while XP was fully installed on a single NTFS partition. Using Gparted I shrunk the XP partition, and created some Linux partitions. I've verified that the XP partition (sda1) is bootable. Afterwards, I removed the other (former Linux) disk from the computer. While doing so, I had to temporarily disconnect cables from both drives. Finally, I fresh installed Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04 derivative), on my pre-prepared Linux partitions. Installation completed flawlessly, and during the install, I've noticed that GRUB2 has been installed on sda. Rebooted and got "Disk boot failure" error.
I've checked the BIOS and noticed that the (single) drive was not recognized.
I manually tested from the BIOS and located the drive as IDE3. Saving the new configuration (F10) and rebooting- the HD gain is not identified (the CMOS battery is fine- keeps time).
Booting a live CD I can see and access all above partitions.
I just bought a brand new hardrive (40gb western digital) IDE, 10 pin.I have gone through the installation and partioned the hardrive, when it gets to 100% it asks me to reboot.So i take the disk out, and then it says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER:So i press enter and i get the same message> How can i get Ubuntu to boot up?The computer is a 2003 Medion pc with 512mb of RAM And an AMD Athlon processor. Then I formatted the partition again and reinstalled ubuntu. Since then while it's booting, I get the message Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter. No system files could be read and a lot of error messages was displayed. In fact, it has done a few checks for disk error lately during boot up, but no further warnings given. I gave up recovering, and simply re-installed Ubntu 10.04. I was wondering if this could be related to a virus attack?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.
I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on my laptop. I don't restart the system unless there's an update that requires me to, preferring to use the Suspend feature instead. However, I noticed that after an uptime of a few days, the screen doesn't lock anymore. Neither the shortcut 'Ctrl+Alt+L', nor the terminal command 'gnome-screensaver-command --lock' seem to work. I'm sure restarting the system will enable me to lock again, but I don't think I should restart just to get this feature back.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there some other way to lock the screen?
I did some updates yesterday and now I cannot lock my screen via the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+L) or the panel.Using fedora 12 and gnome.Here is the Yum log for the updates...

Is it possible to move the boot and OS drive to another controller and still boot machine?
I moved the boot drive sdb1 to a different controller and I can figure out how to make the machine boot from it.
I changed the bios and get a brief boot indication, I then editted menu.lst in the grub folder and pointed it to the new device but still the machine won't boot.
Is there something I need to do, other than reinstall?
To change the GDM image all you really have to do is right click on the desktop and hit "Change Desktop Background" and select the picture you want and then hit the "Make Default" button and both will change naturally. (The lock screen and GDM Login background)Then just switch it back to your usual desktop wallpaper and go on about your day.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Gnome on Fedora 15 (currently in failback mode). I've installed the Fedora provided xscreensaver RPMs and ensured that xscreensaver is running when I login (not gnome-screensaver). The problem is, when I try to lock my screen using one of the multiple "lock screen" icons nothing happens. The following line does appear in my ~/.xsession-errors file when the icon is clicked.
** (gnome-panel:3548): WARNING **: Could not ask screensaver to lock: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnkn own: The name org.gnome.ScreenSaver was not provided by any .service files
This line appears regardless of whether or not the gnome-screensaver RPM is installed. I've tried with both gnome-screensaver installed and without it installed with the same result.
Running "xscreensaver-command -lock" from the command line does successfully lock the screen.
Also, the screen lock icons do work when gnome-screensaver is installed and is set as the default screensaver. Anyway, I just upgrade to Fedora 15 recently (I've used all previous version of Fedora) and this is the first time I've run into this problem.

I keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.
How do I stop this and diagnose this?
I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!

how I can get these two cards working together?
At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.
Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.
So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.
I just downloaded OpenOffice 3.2.1 from the openoffice.org weebsite. I followed the instructions precisely and everytime ended up in the same error message - 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)'. I am using Fedora 13.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have triple boot pc (xp, ubuntu, and fedora), installed in that order. xp and ubuntu seem to be stable. i have had to pull the power cord 3 or 4 times while booted in fedora. i noticed the last 2 times i can still move the mouse around, but can't get it to open anything. the keyboard is locked up, can't alt-f1 or f2 or anything to get console. can't get it to do anything, other than watch the mouse tail move around (weird).
i installed a new power supply (and at least i now have a power switch - the old one never had one), but that didn't fix the lock up problem. i haven't ran yum update since the fc10 live cd gnome install. was planning on doing that later.. not sure how long it will stay up to download all the 300 or so updates. right now the only thing open is a terminal (can't type in it).. what should i look at to fix this lock up problem?
