Fedora :: Cannot Boot Into 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.x86_64?

Sep 9, 2009

I was on version 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 and it asked me to update so I did. When I restarted I chose this version to install and after a brief loading screen it goes to a black screen with a cursor prompt and pretty much stays there. So I go back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 which boots up just fine. But after a while I get some updates that won't install because it says that Packages are not compatible:Install - Linux Kernal 2.6.30.5-43.fc11(x86_64)

ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:

Red Hat / Fedora :: FC11 X86_64 Install Freeze ?

Oct 1, 2009

Fedora 11 (64 bit) installation on a clean system hangs at various points. The farthest it's gotten is just over half of the 1035 packages tagged for installation (cd 2 of 6 was the last prompted). At that point, the screen goes black except for a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Keyboard is dead (e.g. cap/num lock is unresponsive).

Other attempts have stalled at other spots, such as creating the file system - system became unresponsive, no mouse movement, etc.; or installing brasero-libs when it simply stopped installing, mouse/keybd were OK, CD would not respond or eject.

These situations persist when using basic video mode, along with acpi=off and ide=nodma. Below is a description of the hardware in use.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Kentsfield Q6700 2.66 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 300 GB Seagate IDE ST3300831A as master, single cabled with CD-ROM as slave connected to the sole IDE motherboard port
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

Fedora :: FC11 - Preupgrade - FC14 - Boot - 200MB

Jan 14, 2011

I'm planing to upgrade from FC11 to FC14 using a preupgrade. I've read about some ways to overcome the problem of my /boot partition being only 200MB in size while the newer versions require 500MB. The option of "filling the free space on the boot partition to be less than 100MB to cause preupgrade to download the loader" appeals to me. But what I don't understand is: is the 500MB requirement of the new versions is transient during the install or a permanent requirement? If I do this trick of first filling up the free space on /boot then freeing it up before the reboot, what will be the permanent disk space requirement of FC14?

Are there any safe (and prefarably simple) ways to increase the size of the /boot partition after decreasing the size of other partition? Here is the output of "df" relevant to the /dev/sda disk:

Fedora Security :: FC11, SELinux, And Initrd No-boot Scenario And Resolution?

Jul 16, 2009

So, I had fun with this one the past week. I had an FC11 system running just fine. Then one day it would not boot - it was hung somewhere inside the init script of the initrd image. CTRL-ALT-DEL would reboot the system. Using grub editor, I could temporarily delete the initrd line and boot into the system OK. But what was going on?

mkinitrd was of no help to me. I even did a yum update, which got a new kernel, which also generated a new initrd - no joy. I extracted the initrd file system and edited the init script. I eventually hit on this tidbit: If I commented out this line:

daemonize --ignore-missing /bin/plymouthd and rebuild the initrd image - the system would finally at least tell me what the problem was: mount failed for selinuxfs on /selinux. No such file or directory.

So, I examine the root (the real root, not the initrd temporary root) - and sure enough, no /selinux. I make one and reboot. The system goes into a "targeted policy relabel" operation, reboots, and I am back in business - even with my original, unmodified, initrd.

I have no idea what happened to my /selinux directory, but I think the initrd "init" script needs to check for this directory's existance, and make it if necessary. Or at least report that it isn't there. In FC11 right now the system just HANGS without this directory being present, without any clue as to what the problem is!

Fedora :: 13 Kernel 2.6.34.7-63 X86_64 Causes Boot Failure?

Dec 7, 2010

I have just updated my kernel and immediately struck trouble. The kernel update is marked as security update.
When booting I get a multiple warnings " deprecated config file /etc/modprobe...", then "no root device found" followed by "boot has failed, sleeping forever"!Clearly something is amiss with this update, so figured the best thing might be to remove it and wait on a fix, but attempting to remove the kernel via the package manager would cause a whole lot of other packages to be removed as well.Instead, I edited grub.conf, commenting out all the kernel-2.6.34.7-63 lines, so that the default is now the previous kernel (2.6.34.7-61).

Fedora :: Kernel 2.6.31.6-145.f12.x86_64 Update Wont Boot?

Dec 1, 2009

I tried to update my f12 today. In the list it showed an update for kernel-2.6.31.6-145.fc12.x86_64 It all seemed to go OK but when I restated my computer it spit up an error and wouldn't boot"Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31.6-145.f12.x86_64/modules.dep: No such file or directory"Luckily the old kernel still works.

I do have the disk encryption set, could this be related to that? Updated my laptop today with the xx.6-145.f12.PAE kernel and now it's borked to. Same problems.12/07/2009OK today's kernel update seemedto fix the problems and now all is well, execpt for my inkscape not working problem. But I put ubuntu 9.10 in a VBox and it works. So for now that's my work around.

Fedora :: Finding Lost /boot Partition On F12 X86_64

Dec 8, 2009

During attempted repair of damaged USB stick with fdisk and parted, an error appears to have changed the partition holding the /boot partition. At one point I possibly typed sda1 instead of sdb1 and appear to have lost my /boot partition.

This is on a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 228CA Portable running only Fedora (No multiboot).

I am able to reach most of the programs and data on the machine with the rescue mode from the F12 x86_64 DVD, chroot /mnt/sysimage command - so the main part of the system is still available. But when the machine starts up all I get is the 'grub:' prompt. In rescue mode I can cd /boot but there is nothing to list, and certainly there is no /boot/grub. fdisk /dev/sda1 p reports 255 heads 63 sectors/tracks 25 Cylinders Units=cylinders of 16065 x 512 = 8225280 Bytes Disk Identifier 0x0000000 - and then nothing under the headings Device, Boot, Start End etc...

Previously /boot was on /dev/sda1 a 194 m patition, with 39m used and 146m available (according to logwatch mail),

My questions:
Are there any commands in the grub program that would help my recovery - I doubt it, because grub is in place and running but I am not sure. Could I using fdisk recover the sda1 partition and it's contents? If so - how? If no, could I use the F12x86_64 to update and hence recover the /boot drive and retain the the LVM volumes both programs and content? If no, is my only option to reload F12 from the start, then rsync in my backup /home directory?

Since there had been a fair amount of customization done on the previous F11 which had been preupgraded to F12 I would prefer any option that would retain the customizations ...

Fedora Installation :: FC11 X64 Dell T5400 Dual Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 Fails To Graphically Boot

Sep 4, 2009

I'm running into this issue after installing Fedora Core 11 off DVD. Anaconda install the first part of the installation, then after reboot it goes into run level 3 (I think, where you have to login as root) I noticed that it said xserver failed to load before it actually boots Anaconda.

Maybe I should pull a graphic's card? I have logged in as root after the base install and did a lspci, and you can see the two Nvidia Quadro FX1700's and you can tell it is an intel board with the Intel Corp 6311ESB/6321ESB PCI Express ports. Also you can navigate through the linux directories via ls \. I tried YUM to find/install the graphics drivers but it says something about metadata not being configured. I checked the IP address with ifconfig and had to manually assign an ip.
