Red Hat / Fedora :: FC11 X86_64 Install Freeze ?
Oct 1, 2009
Fedora 11 (64 bit) installation on a clean system hangs at various points. The farthest it's gotten is just over half of the 1035 packages tagged for installation (cd 2 of 6 was the last prompted). At that point, the screen goes black except for a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Keyboard is dead (e.g. cap/num lock is unresponsive).
Other attempts have stalled at other spots, such as creating the file system - system became unresponsive, no mouse movement, etc.; or installing brasero-libs when it simply stopped installing, mouse/keybd were OK, CD would not respond or eject.
These situations persist when using basic video mode, along with acpi=off and ide=nodma. Below is a description of the hardware in use.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Kentsfield Q6700 2.66 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 300 GB Seagate IDE ST3300831A as master, single cabled with CD-ROM as slave connected to the sole IDE motherboard port
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

I was on version 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 and it asked me to update so I did. When I restarted I chose this version to install and after a brief loading screen it goes to a black screen with a cursor prompt and pretty much stays there. So I go back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 which boots up just fine. But after a while I get some updates that won't install because it says that Packages are not compatible:Install - Linux Kernal 2.6.30.5-43.fc11(x86_64)
ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:

You may or may not of heard of this project. But I have made an RPM to install this software. This software was developed by Rohan Anil and his project is on [URL]..This will install the module and try (still a few bugs here) and set up GDM.(Removed from FC12 onward in case program stops working) You can find it here.[URL]...Or you can set up my repo with this[URL]..and install using. yum install pam-face-authentication-gdm or using add remove software utility.Setup notes:
Make sure you run qt-facetrainer to set up your face. If you can not see the camera window on login you may need to set SELinux to permissive.
Check /etc/pam.d/gdm-password
Make sure that ..
auth sufficient/lib/security/pam_face_authentication.soenableX
is before
auth substack password-auth
To set up su to use pam-face-authentication add at the top .

It starting working by itself
When the interface connects to the router, it seems to freeze the desktop
control alt backspace does not crash it to the run level 3, leaving a hard reboot as an option
Oh well time to stick a switch in the hall closet, lol.

kpackagekit warned me about a distribution upgrade to FC12in order to set things in motion i have to press the upgrade button is this action completely safe?since my FC11 is working like a charm, and i consider to upgrade to FC13, depending on the fact if i can build kernel drivers for kernel 2.6.32-,, that is still in the testing repo'smy idea is to upgrade all available packages from testing when fc11 is EOL, and i will see what happends after this upgrade, if my system crashes or whats so ever, i will install FC13.

I am trying to install fc11 on an intel mb with pentium4 and ati graphics
the install always hangs at the point where the sw packages have been selected
and the install is checking dependencies.
I have tried the regular install
the basic video install, and text install
with the same symptoms each time
the dvd drive lite is on and the hard disk activity lite is on and the system is frozen.
have to power off.
I have fc11 installed on another system (amd) and had install issues also but that was
with the preview.

After trying to do a upgrade to fc11 from fc10 it seems i am stuck between them. the grub loader only shows 1 fc11 kernel, but when i try yum update all the updates are fc10, Some libs are so.8 and some are so.7 namely libssl.so.8 and the missing deps are libssl.so.7.
is there a way to revert back to fc10 or force install of fc11.

New install from downloaded DVD. sound played after install. Installed rhymbox, which tried to install the various nonfree packages. I didn't have the keys installed so it failed miserably. From various websites I've used yum to install nonfree packages to support mp3. I now have both movieplayer and rhymbox which have no sound. Even more strangely, rhymbox 'slider' which follows the playtime remaining, simply doesn't move? Tried remove/re-install rhymbox to no avail.

I tried to upgrade to FC11 via download and DVD and in both cases the install hangs on bootstrap right after remounting the root filesystem in read/write mode.
Since it hangs in this manner, I have not been able to gather any logs...

FC11 i386 dvd iso image passes pgp verify. Burns fine and verifies fine under nero. Boots fine and verifies fine on my athlon system and installs just fine. Not one issue at all. 1374 pkgs install without issue. Take the same disc put it into my dell poweredge 2850 (dual xeon) and the disc fails to verify.
Even if I go ahead and try to install, it will boot and go through the menus. Then on package install at some point it will say one is corrupt and halts the install. Yet ubuntu 9.04 installs just fine on it. So I don't see how it could be the dvd player itself, though not 100% ruled out.

Was using preupgrade from FC11x64 to 12x64. Preupgrade caused alot of problems like /boot not enough diskspace. After some searching found the steps and preupgrade proceed happily but after reboot got kernel panic grrr.
Took 3 days to find another machine to download and burn the FC12x64 disk. So I booted via the FC12x64 disk and selected the 1st option to install/upgrade. I thought it is upgrade and so choose replace my existing linux system however it wiped out everything on the disk. I have some important data in my home directory. I think it is in LVM, not a partition like /dev/sda1. How can I recover them? Was using stock settings.

I installed FC11 from installation cds twice and I'm having a problem with Firefox freezing the system. The mouse cursor will move but nothing else is responsive, including mouse buttons and keyboard.I checked the media on every disc and they all check fine.I never had this problem with FC10. I tried upgrading Firefox -- with the necessary dependency upgrades too but without success.I tried to downgrade to FC10 Firefox and ran into a great big hassle with that.

By default, Fedora x86_64 only installs 64 bit libraries under /lib64 when OS installation! I think, it is not very good because there are so many 32 bit application software, without 32bit library, 32bit application can not run at all! Why Fedora not install both libraries by default, any concern?

Installing f10 on an x86_64 platform from CD or netinst. I can't seem to find a way to have it install i386 compatible (32-bit) software at the same time. Is there a repo that has to be enabled? In f8 i think it was just a box to click somewhere.

I installed Fedora 10 x86_64 from DVD this weekend. Once the install was completed and I booted into the new install, I ran the Software Update expecting to find and download security updates. However, to my surprise no updates were found! The install DVD was downloaded and burnt to DVD about two weeks ago. Did the installer fetch and install the F10 updates? Or did I mess up my install and/or configuration of F10? I remember when I installed F9 there were a lot of updates found right after the install.

For the last couple of days I've been trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 without success on my new machine, specs below. Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz MSI X58 Pro 7200 SATA Drive (can't remember the make) 6GB RAM So first off I tried install the 32bit live cd and that worked without any problems and installed fine. Only problem is I need access to the full 6GB of RAM so I really need to switch to the 64bit version.
I downloaded the full x86_64 install DVD and burnt it off. Rebooted and began the installation. It was going fine until it started installing the packages. The install seemed to freeze, although the mouse would still move. I left this for 10 minutes just incase it kick started again, but there was no HD activity or DVD activity so I gave up and rebooted to try again. The next time I started the install I had problems with it freezing while partitioning. I was beginning to think something was up with my hard drive or the drivers for the hard drives controller weren't working correctly (could still be the case).
After about 20 attempts with it freezing at various points I gave up and decided to try the x86_64 live cd. This booted with no problems so I started the install from the desktop. First thing I noticed was a kernel error pop up after I started the drive partitioning. Something about dereferencing a pointer in the kernel (0x20) (sorry no additional info at the moment, if needed please ask). This got me thinking the kernels not playing nice with my setup. However, it let me continue and copied the live image onto the hard drive. Then it started going through the post installation steps and this is where I got another kernel error (again I can get this if needed) and the window froze and all activity seemed to stop again. Has anyone got any ideas what could be causing these problems. I've also tried a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 version I had lying around and this had similar problems (although this does use anaconda as the installer too).

First thing after a clean F11 x86_64 install and "sudo yum install gsynaptics" says:
GConf2-2.26.2-1.fc11.x86_64 from installed has depsolving problems
--> GConf2 conflicts with GConf2-dbus
From the verbose output:
gpointing-device-settings-1.3.1-5.fc11.i586 requires: libgconf-2.so.4
--> Processing Dependency: libgconf-2.so.4 for package: gpointing-device-settings-1.3.1-5.fc11.i586

How do I resolve the conflict and get gsynaptics installed?

I'm trying to get skype to work on my new system. It seems to install, but trying to run it I get an error message naming a missing dependency. Searching for this with yum whatprovides and installing the result worked in one case, but for the next one, yum install <package containing missing item> returns a few errors of the form:
package <name-version>.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than <package-version>.fc12.i686) is already installed Is there any way around this? I'd like to get skype working, but am having no luck at the moment. I'd prefer not to remove the .x86_64 packages if I can avoid it in case that breaks something else.

Epson R285, good as gold on FC14, and intially onFC15. Entering the cups admin tool, localhost:631, the printer is set up, the correct drivers are slected, paper size OK.
Cant get it to print a test page, its wants the password for CUPS and wont accept root, but root login can change all other params.
On the gnome printer applet , you can unlock it, add printer select local, and it goes away and finds the Epson R285, click on "add" it queries the printer and immediately drops back to the original printer applet. Without adding a printer. I haven't succeeded with network printing, the firewall is open on port 631, yet any attempt to find it from another computer fails. The gnome printer appet which interfaced with Gnome 2.x was nice, you could select everything needed. Not with this thing.

We (2 persons) are experiencing a total freeze on first boot after installing fc10 from the 6 CD distro set, and yes, we used the same discs but ran the validate check on each. One machine is a rather ancient Acer G7500G which had previously been running FC3 happily; the other is a very new Dell Notebook (now running FC9 happily). The freeze occurs after the progress bar turns all white. Pressing escape shows that the volume group(s) have been found and are now "active", but that's all she wrote.
The systems can be mounted in repair mode and I notice that there is no "functions" file in /etc/rc.d/init.d but this may be normal for FC10.
The Del owner have officially given up, but before I throw FC10 out and go to 9 also, I though the question was worth asking: has anyone installed FC10 from the CD distro as opposed to the DVD distro successfully?

Target hardware is a Sager NP8170 laptop which uses an Intel core i7 CPU and the HM67 chipset. This laptop uses UEFI instead of BIOS. The laptop is configured to boot from the USB ports before booting from the optical drive and then the hard drive. The software I am trying to install is Fedora 15 x86_64. I want to perform the install using a USB drive. I do not want to use DVD media.
how to create minimal boot media as detailed here: [URL] Using dd, efidisk.img has been transferred to a 256MB USB disk. efidisk.img is about 103MB so it fits. I figured this USB drive would boot and take me to a command prompt of some sort but nothing happens. I see activity on the USB drive (flashing light) but then it stops and the laptop boots from the hard drive which currently has Windows on it.
There is $&*# for information on installing to a UEFI system. I don't even know if this efidisk.img USB drive is supposed to present me with a command prompt and from there I can kick off the Fedora installer from another, larger USB drive or the network or whatever. I really don't want to go back to optical media. Also, I burned the F15 x86_64 ISO to a DVD and that DVD does boot. I did not think the stock Fedora DVD version would boot on a UEFI system.
