I was using debian lenny 5.0.5. Yesterday, I did a general update of the system and today it doesn't work. Debian just doesn't start, the screen looks black, the keyboard gives me no response, and I need restart with the "reset" button, how I can fix it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am working as system administrator for the past 5 years, but only on Windows XP systems, I recently moved to Linux, frankly speaking a few days ago, and i got many problems with it. may be as i am a beginner. My Problem started with Ubuntu 9.04 amd 64 and now with 10.04 beta.
The main problem I installed the wine (I am aware that wine is not compatible with all softwares of microsoft) and Installed microsoft office 2007 and it installed successfully but after installation when I launched Microsoft Excel it got hanged (only the Microsoft excel) and loading logo stood on top of all applications, then I decided to restart and pressed the restart button from menu on the right top. but there was no further response, then I pressed the reset button after waiting for 3-4 minutes to get rid of that logo of Microsoft in the center of my screen.
Now, when the Ubuntu was booting, Text arrives and disappears fast saying dev/file system has errors the logo of Ubuntu 10.04 and dots of loading at the bottom arrived and text written in the bottom of that "on of the drives needs to be checked, please wait it may take some time" Press 'C' to cancel disk check up. Now, its checking for a long time maybe for 30 minutes and the bottom text disappears and the loading Ubuntu 10.04 logo still remains and nothing happening after that.
I Pressed alt+crtl+del 2 times, it restarts saying that saving some alsa process, then again the same thing after restart. If I press C, it displays in the bottom of Ubuntu 10.04 logo "/File system has errors" and the loading screen remains like that. Now what is the solution and what are the precautions to be taken while using Ubuntu, as I was interested in introducing Ubuntu to marketing managers of offices, who wonder on the Internet all the time finding stuff and getting attacked by viruses. If this type of problems continue in Ubuntu, it will not be safer to use it, as if it wont boot during sudden power failures, that could result in a big problem.

Basically, when I do a reboot or shutdown and then the system tries to start I get a blank screen thus I have to hit the reset button and then I'm showed a grub menu (not sure why I have it set to autoboot) and then I can boot properly.
In my KUBUNTU 9.04 every time i set my desktop(wallpaper) it is reset to default after restart.

I use a dial up broadband so i have to dial usin PPPoe top connect to internet. so when I'm using wireless modem I have to first make sure that the wifi is established and then run PPPoe. i configured the wireless eth1 thru iwconfig with difficulty as it getting the SSID and the key phrase updated to the settings only when i run the command twice.
Ok got connected to the internet and yes my work i dopne i shutdown or restart my system for somereason and here the problem starts , all the configuration done to the iwconfig eth1 is gone again my eth1 is a default one with no SSID. and i thought the problem is da hardware switch ,but NO it was not my eth1 is always ON

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Ubuntu to 9.10 and tried to log in, it worked that is until it freezes up and the only way out is to hit the restart button.
Note: I CAN log in with Failsafe Gnome.
I upgraded to 13.1 and found the restart, shutdown buttons do not work. I have to resort to the terminal commands init 6, or poweroff. I then tried to install flash plugin. I modified the slackbuild script as per normal. Then issued the following command which seemed to succeed. But when I try to play utube movie it says flash is not installed. Do I need to rebuild the system?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu with no problems for a while now. Earlier today, I began to download some updates. When I came back to the computer, there was a prompt to restart, but also an error message. I didn't catch the error message until I had clicked the restart button. Now, when I try to access Ubuntu from the dual-boot menu (I run Vista as well), I keep getting the following error message.
[3.190034] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block (8,2).I tried safe mode, and I got the same error message. Vista runs normally.
Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently converted an ageing Toshiba 2410-303 laptop (Intel 1.7 GHz, 512 MB, 28 GB HD) from Windows XP to Xubuntu. Everything was running fine & dandy until yesterday I had the (unfortunate it seems) idea to use the "Suspend" button at the end of a working session (until that day I had only used "shut down" or "restart" (the anglosaxon words may be different since I run a dutch language version)). Anyway, my laptop immediately went into the standby/suspend modus and several hours later I was unable to resume normal operation with the usual mouse movement or enter key. Nothing happened.
I've tried the following:
- press the power button for 2 sec, result: the ventilator starts up, I hear the HD spinning and the power led starts blinking orange (the Toshiba manual tells me this means the laptop is in standby) and I hear a regular system beep. But ... Xubuntu does not start at all. If I continue pressing the power button, the laptop shuts down completely.
- I removed the battery temporarily, reinserted it and repeated the above procedure but still ... no luck.
I cannot open the cd tray, so reinstalling is not an option either.
I have tried various other key combinations such as ctrl+alt+del etc. but to no avail. It seems that I'm stuck with a useless laptop now.
I'm reasonably convinced my laptop is not dead yet but it cannot be approached for the time being.
I'm unable to reset using either the reset option in gnome shell or the command using a terminal. When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware

I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.

I'm running Debian server 5.0.6 and the latest stable version of Apache. I am hosting a website and it will stop responding after an unknown amount of time. In order to make the website work again I have to run /etc/init.d/networking restart. The server is running a static IP address and is not resetting when the website goes down. I don't know where to start looking.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a strage problem with openssh-server on debian lenny. I've done setup of sshd and basically everything works fine. I can check the fingerprint of the ssh-keys on the server and it matches with the fingerprint shown on the client for the first connection. so the key is stored in the known-hosts-file on the client.
The problem occurs after a "connection reset by peer" (i guess when the connected client goes to sleep or a timeout occures)!
After such a reset, when I try to connect to the server, the banner "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" appears and the shown fingerprint of the server-key is totally wrong (it differs from the one on the server, BUT it is everytime when this problem occurs the same fingerprint). If I nevertheless remove the correct key from the known-host-file and accept the new key, I still can't login (permission denied).
To fix this situation temporarily I just need to restart the networking on the server. After the network-restart I get (again) the correct fingerprint of the server-key and can login without problems. Until the next connection reset.
After a recent Debian 8 update, I notice a new problem with the Gnome-Terminal. When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?
