Ubuntu :: System Crashing 10.04 \ Running Again Is To Press The On/off Button Until The System Powers Off And Restart?
Sep 6, 2010
I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

Booted up system and it stated please insert system disk press any key.So it sounds like my startup got corrupted? I running centos 4.5 on it (old yes) Is there a repair I can perform by a disk? Would it matter if I chose i386 or x86? I cant remeber which version was installed on it.

My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

What would be the advantage of running a 64bit system over a 32bit system? I only have 3GB of ram but plan on kickin another 1GIG into it. But i wanna try 64bit Linux(probably slackware) on it. But first im just wondering what the advantages are people have seen who have used both 32/64bit linux. Speed? Smoothness? And also what are major disadvantages such as compatibility, configuration, etc.

I'm trying to do exactly this: [URL] the first time i did it, I made it and everything was fine, except I didn't know what "installation size" meant in wubi, so as I selected 3GB, the rest of the partition was left empty and I didn't have enough space for ubuntu. Then I formatted the partition again and reinstalled ubuntu. Since then while it's booting, I get the message Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter. I tried reinstalling many times, but I still get this message..

Today, I was downloading some stuff from online. I left for a few minutes and came back to find that someone had hit my loose power cord, causing the computer to restart. When I completed the reboot (It always says "Insert system disk and press enter" after checking CD drives), and had it load OpenSuSE 11.3 Failsafe (Regular won't work for me), it loaded into Teal (BASH, Command Prompt, Kommand, whatever you want to call it). At first, I thought maybe I screwed up and told it to load into that. But, I tried again, and it did the same. I tried using Non-Failsafe, and got the same results. I am able to edit, add, or remove programs from the Linux partition, though.

I bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.

Yesterday I installed AssaultCube from the repositories. I started the game and, after 2 or 3 minutes, it crashed my system. A hard reboot was the only choice I had. Those crashes continued happening every single time I tried to play the game. Very dissapointed I decided to uninstall it and download it from its website. What guess what?? I continues crashing my system.I'm tired of hard rebooting my laptop (for obvious reasons),I've read that Compiz could be causing this problem, but stopping it didn't prevent my system from crashing after a few minutes of playing the game.I never got to play for more of 2 or 3 minutes.Code:compiz stopThis is how I'm stopping compiz.

My system keeps crashing...it freezes and I have to do a hard reset. I don't know why or what to do about it. It usually happens when I have mencoder encoding video from a capture card. I just did a clean install of Lucid because Karmic (with stock kernel) did the same thing...to no avail.Getting the same message in /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/messages:Quote:Jun 22 12:50:11 golem kernel: [76000.385090] npviewer.bin[5063]: segfault at ee99c054 ip 00000000f6183033 sp 00000000ffe605c0 error 4 in libflashplayer.so[f5de4000+b04000]It's not always npviewer.bin...in the past it's been mencoder or something else.I have a brand new Core i5 750 system with 4GB memory and 7200rpm SATA HDD

I am using ubuntu 10.4 on a Sony vaio and I never had troubles with the previous versions.just in those days something strange is happening. With no apparent reason, few applications running, the system will just freeze...sometimes I would be able to open a further application, some other things not. I have tried everything (in my knowledge)after which I simply use Alt F2, call the terminal and reboot (the only operation that the system will allow me to do.I have found no pattern of behaviour but his has happened with the following application running
Firefox, Openoffice and Rhythmbox
Firefox and Torrent
now Firefox alone (yes it might be firefox...but still, if I am not wrong it happened also when firefox was shut and I was working on openoffice)now I have logged on into xfce environment to write this message (and I am using Midori as browser)..

kernel 2.6.35-23-generic
64 bit amd turion dual core
toshiba satellite about 6 months old
4gig ram (oddly only 3.1gig shows up :/)
ubuntu 10.10
ATI GPU
how to get it and i will get it
alright the problem is every now and then my system locks up and i try things like ctrl+alt+Fn and ctrl+alt+del and ctrl+alt+backspace but nothing works exsept when hold down the power button for a hard reset and occasionally somthing else happens that can only be comppared to a BSOD in windows but with out the blue screen it just goes to a screen with vertical grey stripes for 2 seconds ish then reboots
so i dont have the slightest idea of what it could be tho i think it could be something to do with the graphics chip maybe?
its happened quite a few times both in 10.04 and 10.10
if you want system logs i can attach them when ever

I've been running 10.04 on an old tower for a few weeks now. I've updated the software with no problems. Yesterday I let Update Manager go ahead with installing some updates. Now, the computer will crash while unattended. The screen stays off, and the machine doesn't respond to pings. I've found nothing of use in the syslog. The display going to sleep isn't the trigger, as it will turn off and come back before the issue presents. It seems to occur after 15 minutes or so of idle activity. Also, after an update a couple weeks ago, linux-headers and linux-image won't install cleanly. I'm going to try disabling power saving features to see if it continues occurring.

I've got a system that has given me problems since day one. It's my oldest kids computer and she seems to open about twenty tabs in Firefox. The computer will freeze and she'll manually hold down the switch to reset. I've instructed her to please stop shutting it down manually but kids never listen. So anyway the thing reboots into initramfs. Seems unable to do anything with the hard disk. Now heres where I run into problems. In the past I've removed the drive and put it into one of my other Ubuntu boxes then ran fsck. fsck always recovers the journel quickly and I pop it back in and all is well.First question or situation if you will. I have tried left and right to get fsck to work from the livecd. If I let the livecd boot up and open a terminal fsck /dev/sda1 comes back with device or resource busy. Apparently the livecd get stuck automounting and causes problems.
I'm really tired of putting this thing in another box. I tried downloading knoppix but it wouldn't burn off for some reason. I've tried booting into rescue mode, but that seems to be missing from the livecd these days? Can I boot into single user mode somehow? Kill off some process that is causing the resource to be busy? I'm thinking once I maybe flagged the drive as dirty and had it clean itself on reboot.. will the livecd pick up on that?ok.. so thats the first situation.. second is upon recently fsck doesn't fix the problem. The drive recovers just fine, but after using the computer for a short while the drive will somehow magically mount as read only.. and then programs will freeze and shutting down is hard to do.

Not really sure I'd call myself a newbie with Linux, I've been using a few different distros for a little over a year now.. maybe longer.Though, I'm not very good with terminal just yet. I don't know all the code stuff.I put this system together about 6 months ago. It's comprised of about 50/50 new and used parts. Everything should be listed in my signature file. All was running just fine when the build was complete. But now it seems every day its getting slower, crashes almost every 30 mins.. USB 2.0 runs very slow and lags to the point it just stops altogether.
I really wish that I could test on Windows, or any other OS for that matter. But I'm down to my last hard drive, a very slow (4k RPM?) tiny (40GB) Maxtor IDE. I don't even want to waste any more of my time trying to install/reinstall any OS to the thing. Don't think my mobo allows for booting from USB flash drives, and still yet with it running USB so slow what would be the point?I've tried Ubuntu 10.04 and was very satisfied... except that it won't allow any usage of my Azio PCI wireless N card. The light goes on and it flashes as if its trying to connect, but it won't connect to any secure connection.
So here I am back to 9.10 and wondering if my hdd and/or RAM could be causing some sort of problem? Is RAM being a bottle neck? It's DDR333 but CPU clocks it320 because of something to do with the 800FSB and whatever stupid Intel chipset is on mobo. Can someone please give me a suggestion as to where to start? I have no other computer and really need it for school and work. I have no money for new system or even any more parts. It's getting me so peed that I'm about ready to take a 4 pound sledge to it

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10x64, Athlon II x4, 4 gigs of ram, ATI Radeon HD 4770 with fglrx drivers (downloaded from the ATI website and installed as per the Ubuntu community wiki). I did a clean install of Ubuntu when I put in the ATI card. I've been having a lot of problems with my system locking up entirely due to video problems. The mouse won't work, ctrl-f1 or f2 don't do anything, no keyboard commands work, in fact, except for doing alt+prscr+REISUB in order to restart. At first this was happening seemingly at random whenever I watched videos. In another thread, I was able to narrow this down to Compiz, and I solved it by completely removing Compiz. It very rarely happens while watching video files or DVDs now (though it has happened).
In General, 3D gaming seems to work working fine with wine. I can play WoW and Civ4 with no lockups. However, Left4Dead always locks up the system the moment the map loads. This has also happened with OpenArena. I'm not so concerned about Wine apps (and I know this isn't the place to ask about them). What I'm concerned about is why this is locking up my entire system rather than, say, just crashing the game. figure out why video seems to be taking down my entire system?

I was installing "wine" last night and since I knew it was going to take a while I closed the lid of the laptop and turned it upside down on the floor. (I always turn the laptop upside down when not using it otherwise might overheat)When I woke up this morning roughly 8 hours after I went to sleep the machine was turned off.Using the "last -x | grep shutdown | head -1" it stated that it went down at roughly 6 hours from when I went to sleep. The program I was installing got finished installing but I never set up an auto-shutdown program or anything of the sort.If this isn't a problem with linux then its a problem with my bios. If its a problem with my bios I will just have to live with it because my bios is locked. /var/log/messages says this:
Code:
alexslaptop logger: ACPI event unhandled: battery BAT1 00000080 00000001

I've got a fun one for you. What makes absolutely any attempt to view a flash video crash Ubuntu 10.10, both in firefox and chromium? Lately, firefox began doing this. I switch to chromium, same thing. Also, the system completely locks up after about 30 minutes online if I can get the thing to work at all. When this happens, the rounded edges of all windows disappear, the menus become unresponsive, and any attempt to open the system monitor to end the offending process results in an "Unable to fork new process, system resource unvailable" something like that.
My entire online routine goes like this: open terminal, su to admin account to enable ufw (which will not run at boot no matter what I try), su to normal, limited account, open web browser, things explode (or work for 15 minutes before freezing completely.)

I recently had my laptop which ran windows xp, wiped and ubuntu installed in its place. I was told of all the grand benefits of ubuntu so I thought yeesss. Everything was running beautifully, everything was heavenly, until i encountered "a flash website ". This was strange because ..... worked fine.
Anyway ever since I encountered that site Ubuntu crashes on startup. I log in then crash. Its strange because sometimes it takes a while to crash e.g. when trying to open any application, or sometimes its instant.
1. How i diagnose this problem so it can be fixed, remember it may have to be before the log in.
2. Is there someway I can do a system restore to its original settings or something?

I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).
I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?

Whenever I navigate into a folder containing video files, my entire system freezes/crashes. The keyboard, video, and the entire system become entirely unresponsive.
I can recreate the problem every single time by simply opening a nautilus window, then going into a directory containing 1 or more video files (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.). It doesn't seem to matter whether I stay in the folder, or quickly navigate away either. Seconds later, the system freezes entirely, to the point where my capslock key does not even toggle the capslock indicator.
I first noticed the problem when I installed 10.10 months ago on my Acer AspireOne D250. I had recently upgraded to ubuntu natty beta hoping the problem might have been fixed.
