After a recent Debian 8 update, I notice a new problem with the Gnome-Terminal. When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?
View 3 RepliesI'm unable to reset using either the reset option in gnome shell or the command using a terminal. When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

I have a 'special script' in my .bashrc file, which I want to be performed only at Login. When I open a terminal (through a gnome launcher <gnome-terminal> as the command) it unfortunately sources .bashrc.
Hence the opening of the terminal runs the 'special script' again.
How can I instruct .bashrc not to do something except when and only when I am logging in? I found a segment of code which is supposed to do what I want but I am not sure of how it works.

If I'm using gnome-terminal in a working directory whose path includes symlinks and I open a new tab, the symlinks will be expanded to their destinations in the working directory of the new tab.
Is there any way to preserve the symlinks when opening a new tab?
When I was running it before, that was Debian as well, I was able to make my gnome-terminal window decorations completely transparent and/or gone - so the terminal appeared to be typing directly on the desktop.
The method I used before to accomplish this was pretty straightforward, these options could be found in the actual terminal's interface and menu options.
However, now, I get the following result:

I updated my Jessie system today. Nothing crucial in the apt-get list as far as I can see, perhaps it's unrelated. Anyway, now I cannot open the terminal any longer. Launching `gnome-terminal` shows the app name in the menu bar, a spinning wheel, and then after a few seconds nothing. It doesn't appear in the list of processes, either. I can still log into the text shell via ctrl-alt-F1.
I also added `LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"` to `/etc/environment` to get rid of the American date format. Could it be the cause? I just tried to launch the terminal from the JVM. I get this output:

This problem has lasted for several months, but I can't find anything like bug report in debian related website.
Basically my problem is after genome-terminal (version 3.4.1.1) is launched, I want to change profile setting such as font, color, etc. However, when I click the button `Edit > Profiles > Edit`, nothing happens (no dialogue pop up). `Edit > Profiles > New` And `Edit > Profiles > Delete` function correctly.
Under wheezy, I could set gnome-terminal profile to partial transparency, i.e., to display the desktop wallpaper behind the text. (E.g., a picture of my girlfriend.) But after upgrade to Jessie, this option completely disappeared, and now I can only pick a solid color. Do I need to flip a setting or something to get this back? Am running default Gnome desktop (not fallback mode) though I think I only have 2D acceleration.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.
This problem showed after fresh installation of Debian Testing (image is dated at 1 march 2010). When I want remove cd I click button on device but the icon is still at the desktop and in the nautilus too (in the left sidebar). I have to remove it manualy from nautilus or desktop ( option: eject ). This problem shows with packages like gnome-mount or gnome-volume-manager ot without them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am runnig Jessie with the default GNOME. Every thing has been perfectly smooth, but for the audio line in. First you should now the same hardware was working well with Wheezy. Then the hardware card is RealTek ALC887-VD and I am using the analogic part (both for in and out lines).
Below I will write some command results, but first, it seems important to describe the problem. I can hear the audio line in. If I blow in a mic, I definitelly hear the sound of it in the output. With alsamixer I can toggle the line in level and it works fine. By the way, with pavucontrol, it is the same I have access to the line in. but when I look in the Gnome setting for the sound, input, no card is available, then no volume setting is available.
--> as a result, I can't record the sound from the mic. it is sent directly to the output without been taken into account in the system. So no comment on video making, no skype …
On the web, the problem is always "no sound with this card" "No sound after upgrade to Jessie"… but Card is working fine but no seen on a upper level…

Ever since that gnome-terminal doesn't recognize the shortcuts keys like <ctrl>r or <ctrl>c and I get my other language charecters instead. thats happen with any keyboard layout I swith to. Furthermore, <alt><ctrl>+F1...F9 doesn't work either.
View 5 Replies View RelatedStarting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.
So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.
A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.
Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?
If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?
The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a relatively new Debian user, having come from Ubuntu. I recently bought a Dell micro-server to function as my Kodi media player. I installed an nVidia GeForce 210 to output to my Pioneer home theatre amplifier. The amp takes all my inputs (eg. Satellite set-top decoder, PS3, Kodi etc) and outputs to the TV. I installed XFCE as my desktop environment so that I could still interact with it via VNC.
Everything is working great except for one exceptionally annoying problem! Every day, I find that I am having to VNC into the desktop, load up nVidia X Settings, and change my screen resolution from Auto to 1920x1080 because it has lost the display configuration and the screen is blank. I presume this happens when the amplifier switches from one input to the next. It doesn't matter if I save the configuration to my X11.conf file or not - it still resets itself.
Before, this setup would run for months without any intervention (Same amplifier + HP microserver + Ubuntu + LXDE + ATI video card), so I'm pretty confident that the issue is either Debian, XFCE, or the nVidia card.

Not long ago I installed the Linux version of the Real Player (bad, bad me,I know) on my Debian Lenny system. Now Kmail will only open mp3 files attached to incoming mail with the Real Player.Outside of Kmail I have VLC set as my default player for mp3 files and that works fine but Kmail isn't respecting my system choices and I can't find any means, or reference to, changing the default media player in Kmail.This is so incredibly frustrating that it's almost like being stuck with a Windows system again.As a full-time Linux user I've lost my sense of martyred patience.

Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.
Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.
