I have inherited a Compaq Armada 1592DMT that has Debian GNU/Linux (tiny) on its hard drive. After bootup there is a dialog box asking for login & password. Two things I have no way of answering. So how do I recover them? I do not have the faintest idea how Debian Linux works, nor how to Bash Grubs, I'm just an old Windows button pusher.

I am using Debian Linux. I completely forgot the username and password to log on. I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?

I have a fileserver running debian 6 and I would like to be able to remote control it over VNC. I have enabled Remote Desktop in Gnome and it works, however I have to be logged into Gnome for it to work. Gnome doesn't enable vino before a user is logged in for some reason. This presents a problem as there is no keyboard or mouse connected letalone a screen.
I looked up the issue on google and found this: [URL] Long story short, I have to edit /etc/gdm/Init/Default and insert "/usr/lib/vino/vino-server &" just before 'exit 0' at the end of the file, and change "KillInitClients" to "false" in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I edited the first one as it says, but I can't find gdm.conf anywhere. I did however find a 'daemon.conf' in the /etc/gdm directory, and added the line there.
When I try to connect after doing the above, my vnc viewer (client) just disappears - no errors, message, sound - nothing. It doesn't even ask for a password. I checked the comments in the link, and the second to last comment suggests it's because of some negotiating-issue which should be an easy fix:
Turned out I had to enable connections to vino not related to my user account. To do this run sudo vino-preferences and duplicate the settings instructed here

I have been running Lenny with the non-free nVidia drivers for a while now, but decided to run testing RC2.When I was done my monitor had a solid blue-gray background and the mouse pointer, but none of the GUI parts displayed (blank). After a couple of checks I went back to the gdm logon screen and opened 'sessions' to _not_ find Gnome as one of the choices. So I logged into Gnome(failsafe) and got my full GUI.Console (F1) and xterm also work fine.Trying to get my Gnome Desktop back. GDM is working and I have the session choice for TWM, but with Gnome(failsafe) working I haven't tried it yet to see if it works.

I've been a Linux user for 11 years. I'm not new to the ways of live cd's. I am unable to get past the logon screen in Debian Live.
I have tried "live" for the user name without a password - and with root as a password. NOTHING I've tried works.
Anybody got an idea?

I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server. What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

I have a Debian etch system I haven't fired up for about a year because the mobo went bad.I had one user setup, I hammered it with all my normal passwords and finally got a prompt that said 'Access Denied'So my understanding is that I figured out my PW, but for some reason this user doesn't have access anymore. Is there a workaround for this? I am just trying to retrieve some files from the drive I don't have a problem formatting it.
Also I tried hooking it up to a windows machine:I loaded Ext2 IFS, it recognizes the drive, but says it can't load it - something to do with the headers being closed out improperly, and basically said I would have to boot it in linux then try it in windows.I tried this after I got to the linux logon prompt (the bootloader had scanned the drive because it hadn't been scanned for x amount of days), this didn't help Ext IFS read the drive.

This afternoon, I tried to change the password, for the windows access via Samba, but I goofed.
While logged in with a Putty session, I typed code...
It asked me for the new password after the first line, then again after the second line as expected.
In retrospect I probably should not have typed the first line.
Now, however, I can't log in via putty. When I attempt to, it asks for my password, but neither the new nor old password works.
I DO have access to the Samba shares from other windows machines using the new password so that is OK.
It is a non GUI 10.04 server with one user, mark.
Help, please, how do I fix it?
Ideally, I guess I want the old password for the log in, but the new password for Samba shares.

I have succesfully set up authentication manually in Ubuntu so users can log on with Windows Active Directory accounts and have their network drives mapped automatically using pam_mount.
Please note due to the setup I can't make any changes to the Windows 2k3 server.
If a user wants their password reset I can change it to a generic password. When they next log on to a Windows computer with the generic password it will automatically ask them to change it to something else.
Is there anyway to get this to work with Ubuntu 10.10? At the moment when logging onto Ubuntu with an account that is in this state the message Please change your password appears, it then proceds to log on without prompting to change the password and natually it won't map the drives etc.

I mean it asked yesterday and then again today. Is there anyway to reset the key ring passwords and start from scratch.Apparently to many things use key ring so it can't be removed.

I should create a sqeeze image and install it on other computers.Udev should detect network card (NIC) module and load it automatically at startup. How I understand /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules runs when udev starts, then writes to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.The problem is, udev searches for this NIC on other hardware and the network cannot start.I can solve this problem easily using a startup script to delete /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file.

I'm running Jessie 64bit, and after installing the latest image and fully updating it, I get screen freezes using gnome, most oftenly when i press the start button to access gnome app grid. System becomes unusable and I have to hard reset. Just in case, I installed linux firmware from nonfree repos, but the issue persists. I don't use any exotic hardware:
Code: Select all00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 06)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller (rev 06)

00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI (rev 04)
[Code] ....
I'd say it's related to graphics, but I don't know how to get around it...

I'm running Debian server 5.0.6 and the latest stable version of Apache. I am hosting a website and it will stop responding after an unknown amount of time. In order to make the website work again I have to run /etc/init.d/networking restart. The server is running a static IP address and is not resetting when the website goes down. I don't know where to start looking.

I've got a strage problem with openssh-server on debian lenny. I've done setup of sshd and basically everything works fine. I can check the fingerprint of the ssh-keys on the server and it matches with the fingerprint shown on the client for the first connection. so the key is stored in the known-hosts-file on the client.
The problem occurs after a "connection reset by peer" (i guess when the connected client goes to sleep or a timeout occures)!
After such a reset, when I try to connect to the server, the banner "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" appears and the shown fingerprint of the server-key is totally wrong (it differs from the one on the server, BUT it is everytime when this problem occurs the same fingerprint). If I nevertheless remove the correct key from the known-host-file and accept the new key, I still can't login (permission denied).
To fix this situation temporarily I just need to restart the networking on the server. After the network-restart I get (again) the correct fingerprint of the server-key and can login without problems. Until the next connection reset.

After a recent Debian 8 update, I notice a new problem with the Gnome-Terminal. When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?

Starting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.
So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.
A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.
Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?
If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?
The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.
