Aug 12, 2010I have a server with 14 IP's on eth0. I'm using virtual interfaces to handle the IP's, but the iptables don't seem to work on the virtual interface. It blocks ports that I want open. I'm not that great with iptables, I use what I have because it works for me, but as far as tweaking it, I'm pretty lost.

Apr 15, 2010So I know Linux has iptables, I'm rather new to linux, and I'm wondering, are the stock settings with Ubuntu/Kubuntu safe? Is there anything I need to do make them more secure? I tried adding rules myself for some things but ended up just not being able to do anything so I had to reset back to stock with iptables -F. Should I be safe running as-is?

Mar 19, 2010I've started a new job and have inherited a couple of RHEL4 64-bit servers. The firewall on them is currently disabled. I'm struggling to get them up and running as iptables is not the most user-friendly application. This lead me to downloading and trying a GUI front-end: Guarddog. Great app! But it doesn't have the default behavior I'm looking for. Here is what I need:
Default behavior: Firewall should be wide open, allowing ALL ports/IP's/TCP/UDP in and out of the server.
Blacklist: Oracle TCP port 1521 needs to be blocked in/out of the server.
This will help get us passed our company's security vulnerability scan. (We aren't able to patch/upgrade Oracle at this time because we'd lose vedor support with a legacy app). I will use these settings as a starting point, and then once I learn more and get more comfortable with iptables (or a GUI app) then I can fine tune things to make them more secure. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) once I get a script I just copy it into /etc/rc.firewall and it will load when iptables starts.

But I hired a VPS from other country so the only mean I can manage it is via SSH. If I setup the default rule to DROP first, I afraid that I can no longer connect via SSH to tell iptables allow SSH
So my question is:
- Does the IP tables take effect immediately after I input a rule?
- Is there any mean to run this as a batch job (create a script and run all these rules one time).
- My VPS has a web control panel which have a terminal via web. Is this a native terminal or just a connection via port 80 or 22?

Jul 16, 2009So, I had fun with this one the past week. I had an FC11 system running just fine. Then one day it would not boot - it was hung somewhere inside the init script of the initrd image. CTRL-ALT-DEL would reboot the system. Using grub editor, I could temporarily delete the initrd line and boot into the system OK. But what was going on?
mkinitrd was of no help to me. I even did a yum update, which got a new kernel, which also generated a new initrd - no joy. I extracted the initrd file system and edited the init script. I eventually hit on this tidbit: If I commented out this line:
daemonize --ignore-missing /bin/plymouthd and rebuild the initrd image - the system would finally at least tell me what the problem was: mount failed for selinuxfs on /selinux. No such file or directory.
So, I examine the root (the real root, not the initrd temporary root) - and sure enough, no /selinux. I make one and reboot. The system goes into a "targeted policy relabel" operation, reboots, and I am back in business - even with my original, unmodified, initrd.
I have no idea what happened to my /selinux directory, but I think the initrd "init" script needs to check for this directory's existance, and make it if necessary. Or at least report that it isn't there. In FC11 right now the system just HANGS without this directory being present, without any clue as to what the problem is!

Oct 29, 2010my iptables Policy is Drop..my server ports is open just for httpd,ssh .Is there any rule which can allow all connection from a specific program for ex. i want to scan an ip Address ports.as you know nmap connect to every known port to see if that is open or not so, if i want to allow nmap to connect, i need to include all ports for that, or i can allow connection from localhost to outside in all ports .my server is very secure . i dont want other programs (probably a backdoor) use those ports to connect outside i want to know is there any ability in iptables which can rule connections by name of program like "Allow any Connection from /usr/bin/nmap to everywhere " ?

Then I wanted to secure my server with iptables, and I have so far made this script:

I can reach the dns server with ping. When trying Nslookup it says that it got SERVFAIL from 127.0.0.1 trying next server, and then it times out.
