I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 so i am new to linux operating systems.In the top right hand corner where the shutdown button is with the options to restart, mine is not there.Could someone please tell me how to get back this button or another way that I restart so I can access my windows boot?
View 3 RepliesI upgraded to 13.1 and found the restart, shutdown buttons do not work. I have to resort to the terminal commands init 6, or poweroff. I then tried to install flash plugin. I modified the slackbuild script as per normal. Then issued the following command which seemed to succeed. But when I try to play utube movie it says flash is not installed. Do I need to rebuild the system?

looking for a command that shutdown/reboot my ubuntu just same as process that happened when I press shutdown buttonIn fact I need to close all programs that are running and then PC shutdown (that happened when I press shutdown button).

When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

if i go logoff the shutdown button is at the bottom but doesnt work.
I can shutdown in the terminal tho.
How can i fix this (put the buttons back)?
My problem is I can't shutdown directly from kde, I can only log out to gdm. How can I fix this?

I moved things around a bit and I added a top panel to make my lubuntu be more what I'm use to with gnome but I deleted the bottom panel and now I can't find a way to add a shutdown button to the panel..

A few days ago I updated to 8.04.4 on both and since then when I click on the red Shutdown button and then click on 'Shutdown' it just logs me out. Anyone have this happen to them after the update? Any ideas on how to fix it?I am not physically pushing the power button on the PC's. so unfortunately going to Gnome Top Panel Menu > System > Preferences > Power Management > General Tab Actions will not work to correct this issue

My problem is that I cannot shutdown or restart my machine. And I have no idea why it happened.
I have just installed 11.04 on my Acer Z5610 and it won't shutdown or even restart noramally. I have to force shutdown every time. I installed the ati graphics drivers but still no change. What could be wrong?I have reinstalled 4 times, using usb and cd.

But this PC have a problem, if once I shut it down I cant restart it again, but the next day it works properly. I tried in various operating systems like Windows XP service pack 2, pack 1, Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate 32bit and I have checked several times the BIOS settings properly but the problem is still the same.

I am about to put a server in a data center for the first time.I have got Wake on Lan/Network working on the server, however I have noticed that if the server is shutdown from the front button, it is unabled to be awoken via WOL.Is there a centos solution to this, or is this a BIOS issue, or something else? For some strange reason, the lockscreen... shutdown button has suddenly disappeared from the top right of my wife's desktop - it's a circle with a short vertical line at the top. I've found a Shut Down button via 'Add to Panel', but it doesn't have quite the same functionality, e.g. it doesn't support switching to another user. Any idea how to get the lost button back?

technically, this is UNR with lxde installed after extended UNR use. i like being able to hit my power button in gnome, and getting a message asking what you want to do, or cancel if needed. well, in lxde, the shutdown button brings up a similar message. could i map the power button to show that popup in lxde?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.
It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.
I installed 10.04 on my old Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. After using it for about an hour, I was suddenly had no option to shutdown or restart the system when logged in on the main and only account. The 'Shut Down' applet on my bar was greyed out and the shutdown option was missing from the system menu.
I removed the 'Shut Down" applet and was unable to re-add it afterwards (wasn't a selection when adding to panel). If I log off, selecting shutdown or restart from the login screen does nothing.
'Sudo shutdown now' will shut it down, though it won't power the system off; it just hangs on an all-white screen.
I saw other posts suggesting Open Office Quickstart was the culprit, though I am not running this.
