Ubuntu :: Xubuntu 9.10 Will Not Restart After Using The "Suspend" Button

I recently converted an ageing Toshiba 2410-303 laptop (Intel 1.7 GHz, 512 MB, 28 GB HD) from Windows XP to Xubuntu. Everything was running fine & dandy until yesterday I had the (unfortunate it seems) idea to use the "Suspend" button at the end of a working session (until that day I had only used "shut down" or "restart" (the anglosaxon words may be different since I run a dutch language version)). Anyway, my laptop immediately went into the standby/suspend modus and several hours later I was unable to resume normal operation with the usual mouse movement or enter key. Nothing happened.
I've tried the following:
- press the power button for 2 sec, result: the ventilator starts up, I hear the HD spinning and the power led starts blinking orange (the Toshiba manual tells me this means the laptop is in standby) and I hear a regular system beep. But ... Xubuntu does not start at all. If I continue pressing the power button, the laptop shuts down completely.
- I removed the battery temporarily, reinserted it and repeated the above procedure but still ... no luck.
I cannot open the cd tray, so reinstalling is not an option either.
I have tried various other key combinations such as ctrl+alt+del etc. but to no avail. It seems that I'm stuck with a useless laptop now.
I'm reasonably convinced my laptop is not dead yet but it cannot be approached for the time being.
I updated Xubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.Everything seems to work fine but the Quit button (upper rigth corner) doesn't show the Hibernat and Suspend anymore. how to add them ?
xubuntu and tried to set up my old pc, the problem is that when i modify my samba file and want to restart using /etc/init.d/samba restart the file wasnt there
The old way of doing this in gconf-editor (gnome power settings) is now invalid. Here is the new way of doing this! First install devicekit-power:
#aptitude install devicekit-power EDIT (aptitude install upower) installed by default on Lucid
Then edit the power policy: #sudo gedit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.upower.policy
Under the following headings perform the following changes: <description>Suspend the system</description> Change the following entries: Quote: <allow_inactive>no</allow_inactive> <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
I have a dell zino inspiron media pc with Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I am able to shutdown using the power button on machine i.e. System->Preferences->Power Management option 'when power button is pressed': choose 'Shutdown'.But for option 'when suspend button is pressed', I only get 'Suspend' or 'Hibernate' in the drop-down. Where is my 'Shutdown' option?I really want to be able to shutdown my machine from my wireless keyboard!
I have a problem with the suspend button (fn+f5) on my hp pavilion dv2000 laptop. It is working but only after an intervention. So, every I boot up my system the short-cut/button is not functioning. In order to make it work I have to open the Power Management Preferences and close them. I don't even need to change anything there. Now the button will be working just fine until the next restart. It's pretty annoying to visit the Power Management after each restart, isn't it. Any ideas how could I fix this?
When I close the lid on my Dell Latitude e6510 running Fedora 14/Gnome, the machine seems to suspend correctly. When I reopen the lid or otherwise try to awaken it, I get a text screen showing:

I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 so i am new to linux operating systems.In the top right hand corner where the shutdown button is with the options to restart, mine is not there.Could someone please tell me how to get back this button or another way that I restart so I can access my windows boot?

I'm using a lenovo t530 laptop with debian testing. my suspend button combination (fn / f4) suddenly stopped working, from recent updates? How to get a terminal readout from what's happening when i push these buttons.
I upgraded to 13.1 and found the restart, shutdown buttons do not work. I have to resort to the terminal commands init 6, or poweroff. I then tried to install flash plugin. I modified the slackbuild script as per normal. Then issued the following command which seemed to succeed. But when I try to play utube movie it says flash is not installed. Do I need to rebuild the system?

I have been running Ubuntu with no problems for a while now. Earlier today, I began to download some updates. When I came back to the computer, there was a prompt to restart, but also an error message. I didn't catch the error message until I had clicked the restart button. Now, when I try to access Ubuntu from the dual-boot menu (I run Vista as well), I keep getting the following error message.

I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.
What happened to the "Do nothing" option for "When the suspend button is pressed" in Lynx? It would also be useful to have a "Do nothing" option for "When the power button is pressed".
I was using debian lenny 5.0.5. Yesterday, I did a general update of the system and today it doesn't work. Debian just doesn't start, the screen looks black, the keyboard gives me no response, and I need restart with the "reset" button, how I can fix it?
I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work.What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system.So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.
If I suspend this toshiba satellite, and the battery is or gets low it will wake from suspend to tell me that it will need to suspend due to a critical low battery. Which is pretty dumb. I've experimented with this by plugging and unplugging the ac adapter.
1. is it possible to schedule this command in the same manner as shutdown ? eg sudo shutdown -h 60
2. is it possible to schedule the laptop to come out of suspend ?
3. i have a usb sound card (xfi go). when waking from suspend, the internal sound card is selected. i have to manually select the external sound card & for whatever reason, also unmute it too

While searching the net I found how to complete disable the functionality of the middle mouse button but I need this button for many other uses.I want to disable only it's paste action.
I know how to make another button act as the middle button but how can I map several mouse buttons to the middle button? xmodmap complains if I repeat button numbers in the pointer option.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).
i was so happy using the window buttons applet in gnome panel. it was working fine in maximize window , now suddenly i find the close button has vanished i tried to remove and re install, changed theme and all the jugglery within my limits... have absolutely no idea what went wrong, any clue ? to get back the "CLOSE" button ? its funny with just the minimize and restore button visible in maximised mode... its the close button i use most in maximise mode
i have installed dhcp,there i declared the subnet and network,i used command include "/etc/dhcpd.conf.jutu1"; to start and other files, but it show me this error when i want to restart the DHCP, if you need more information contact me, i have configured this file too jutu1, but it don't let me to restart dhcp from /etc/init.d/dhcpd restart, this show me this message
Just got Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm liking it a lot, but my computer refuses to go into hibernate or suspend. I have a Dell M1530 but I don't really think it's a dell hardware issue because it's not just when I close the screen, it's also when I click suspend or hibernate from the menu.
