Debian Configuration :: 3D Games Graphics Won't Work

Aug 13, 2010

I've been having this problem for a long time now. It started suddenly and without apparent cause. 3D games won't work. At first I tried to play OpenArena, and it didn't work, the graphics went terribly slow and choppy, videos were not continious, but rather a succession of pictures of movement. I tried installing and re installing the game several times, but nothing... Now, I'm trying to run hedgewars (the re-make of worms) and it doesn't crash or anything, but the graphics are too slow and choppy again. This is the output from the terminal:

[Code]...

The 'there is no soundcard' message is scary... I have been having sound problems lately, where sounds just stops working in all applications, and only restarting the system will bring sound back. So as you can see my audio and video seem to be on the wrong track. But I don't know how to diagnose the disease... by the way. I installed hedgewars from squeeze though I have lenny. I added the squeeze line to sources.list.and then apt-get-ed it. Is that OK?

Debian Configuration :: Environment To Run Old Linux Games-template

Mar 20, 2016

I have some old linux based games and applications that require old libraries to run.But in the mists of time, I've lost the scripts on how to set up a sandbox environment to run them. Any template for that type of fiddle? I should be able to resource libraries contemporary to the games from my collection of old distros, but my web fu on this matter(jargon) is cracked. It would have to be easier that continually trying to fiddle the MS OS version to run under Wine/PlayOnLinux. I've got Myst II, Civilisation CTP and Railway Tycoon II, although I think the last app I ran was Word Perfect 8.

Debian Configuration :: Low Resolution Graphics

Jun 24, 2015

I installed a GIMP plugin (David's batch processor gimp) and a lot of packages got updated in the process.

The monitor resolution dropped significantly and going to applications -> system tools -> preferences -> settings -> display gives me the message 'could not get screen information' my webcam and microphone is not recognized anymore either ALT + TAB does not change between open windows. power off does not work. I have to shutdown the system using the command line.

The GUI has changed a lot as well. new color schemes (that I don't really like) file system manager has a completely new look too.

it is very strange. My GRUB screen is still in the old resolution. when the system boots up at some point the resolution changes to the lower resolution.

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA Video SUPER Bad Graphics During Games?

Jun 18, 2010

What is causing this graphic distortion?I dropped Vista because this problem would crash the video driver and pop a black screen for a few seconds over and over and over and over. Now that I installed ****ING Ubuntu it's doing this problem, but without the black screens and only messed up graphics show.So what the heck guys, is this a hardware or software problem? And this same type of graphic distortion appears in games like Combat Arms and Halo.I am so SICK of NVIDIA never ever in my whole entire life will I ever buy NVIDIA again! Luckily for nvidia I'm only 17 years old and have 40 years of life left to buy computers without nvidia in them. Until I save up dough for a new computer "without nvidia" I'll keep trying to fix this. P.S this nvidia chip is tied down to my motherboard.

Hardware :: Intel Graphics And Games - Black Screen

Mar 17, 2011

I use Intel HD Graphics and every time I run a game, it black-screens and I have to restart a thousand times before the game works and I can switch to windowed mode (restart once to do this).

lspci:
[alex@alex01 ~]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 18)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18)

00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller (rev 06) .....

I also use an HDMI cord (since computer has HDMI support) so this may be contributing to the problem. The same does not occur with my laptop, which runs Nvidia graphics and Ubuntu. I really want this to not happen so I can play my games instantly without restarting a million times. Some games have yet to work (AssaultCube mostly).

Debian Configuration :: Kernel Modesetting Breaks Graphics?

Aug 1, 2010

Enabling kernel modesetting on my computer breaks graphics, but Xorg.log and syslog don't tell me much, because they don't log any error.

The symptoms are the following: boot goes on normally, then the KDM login screen is corrupted. On the login screen there is a big square instead of the cursor, and that square does move as I move the mouse. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 I'll get a black screen instead of the terminal, and from there I cannot go back to virtual terminal 7 for login. The only thing I can do is to issue sys-requests for read-only remount and reboot.

Where could I start looking for the problem? What does it seem to be related to, Xorg, kernel, radeon driver?

Debian :: Getting Graphics Mode To Work

Aug 15, 2010

I decided to use Debian for my system at work, and while trying to set up the system this weekend I've run into a major problem trying to start X11. I'm not very experienced with Linux, so there is probably going to be some huge gaps in my knowledge as I've only used Ubuntu on my netbook with only a little terminal work, so bear with me. As background info I'm using a Radeon HD 4350 and an nForce 4 board with an Athlon XP 3200 ( I think). Yeah it's some ghetto hardware but it's good enough for what I need to do at work.

Anyway, I successfully install Debian using disc 1 here, and did the Advanced Installation. As a note, I installed Debian once using the standard install, but I was trying to run a few X commands that I only found out after reinstalling need to have X-server running, which it obviously isn't in single user mode. This shouldn't be an issue since I rewrote the partition table and am not using the drive for anything else. After the install finished and I restarted the computer, after the kernel loaded my screen shows wither "Not Support!" or "Input not supported." depending on which monitor I'm using. The first message comes from a cheap Japanese tv so the engrish is understandable, but from what I can tell it's the same error message for both. First guide I tried following was this one. I completed all the steps, and my xorg.conf is currently set at those values. For people who don't want to read through the whole thing:

Debian Configuration :: Graphics:No 3D. Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960?

Mar 1, 2010

I have a fairly new laptop, 2*1.8 Ghz, but when I try to run games more advanced than pac-man, it's about 1-0.5 frames / second. This doesn't seem right. I've goggled it, and found a few posts from 2008-2009, but nothing that actually helped. Does anyone have any idea, as to what might be wrong? If anyone has this card, I'd like to see what you have in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file...

Debian Configuration :: Installing Nvidia Graphics Card - Driver Error

Apr 28, 2010

I revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.

Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?

Debian Configuration :: Blank Screen On Boot. Graphics Card Not In Xorg.conf?

Jul 10, 2010

I've been using ubuntu on a new desktop for a couple of months, but i had an old HP that was given to me in my basement. It has 384Mb of ram, and thats because i had a 256Mb stick laying around. I installed debian becuase it is more suited for older hardware (at least from what I've read). It installed fine, but it boots to a blank screen, and pressing ctrl+alt+F2 bring me to the command line. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa, to find out my video card isn't even shown. I ran lspci and I found that it says my graphics card is Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset graphics controller (rev3) In the device section of xorg.conf, it merly says Identifier"Configured Video Device"

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: Suspend/hibernate Resume Fails With Radeon Graphics

Aug 6, 2010

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.

A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.

The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".

If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

Debian Configuration :: Touchpad Does Not Work In X

Jun 14, 2010

My touchpad just stopped working recently. It works in the framebuffer console, cat /dev/input/mice gives sensible output, X -retro shows a moving cross and it is completely functional during the gdm login prompt. But for some reason, it just stops responding halfway through the login process (roughly at the same time as gnome complains about my old laptop battery, if that is any help.) I run Debian Squeeze with Linux 2.6.32-5-686. The touchpad is a Synaptics PS/2 pad according to Xorg.

I do not understand the problem, actually. X seems unwilling to talk to my touchpad for some reason. When I run X manually from single-user mode, it complains that it cannot talk to my touchpad, but it works in the -retro test mode. As soon as gnome kicks in however, it stops working. synclient -l gives sensible output.

My external USB mouse works just fine.

Debian Configuration :: Suspend And Hibernate Do Not Work At All

Normally I have transmission running and have set it to not enter sleep mode while torrents are active. However today I have not had transmission and was wanting to see if the sleep mode options would kick in. So I have set my display to "sleep when inactive for" 5 mins (this works perfect)
I have set "put computer to sleep when inactive for" 10 mins (this does not work at all)

When I try to manually test suspend my display flashes black for a few seconds but remains backlit, then asks me to log back in
When I manually go into hibernate mode my display turns off, pops back on for a second and in a terminal says something about a usb device (something failed but it happens so fast I cannot read it)
