Debian Configuration :: Blank Screen On Boot. Graphics Card Not In Xorg.conf?

I've been using ubuntu on a new desktop for a couple of months, but i had an old HP that was given to me in my basement. It has 384Mb of ram, and thats because i had a 256Mb stick laying around. I installed debian becuase it is more suited for older hardware (at least from what I've read). It installed fine, but it boots to a blank screen, and pressing ctrl+alt+F2 bring me to the command line. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa, to find out my video card isn't even shown. I ran lspci and I found that it says my graphics card is Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset graphics controller (rev3) In the device section of xorg.conf, it merly says Identifier"Configured Video Device"
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my sister's laptop (it's a Packard Bell; not sure about the model, but I could check); it has two graphics cards: the primary is an ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650, and the second one is an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series. After installation, installed the ATI driver through the restricted devices manager (xorg-driver-fglrx package, I think), and after a couple of reboots, the screen simply went black after boot and I couldn't do anything (I couldn't even switch to a virtual console, and booting on recovery mode was the same). So I booted with the ubuntu live flash drive from which I installed it, and deleted the xorg.conf file, and now I have a GUI, but it uses only the Intel card. I would like to use the ATI card if possible, but the problem is, if I use a xorg.conf file set up to use the fglrx driver, then I have a black screen, and if I use no xorg.conf file, it automatically switches to the Intel card. I also looked in the BIOS for an option to disable the Intel graphics card, but it doesn't have it (it's a very simple BIOS). So, since there seems to be a conflict between both cards, is there a way to tell xorg to ignore one graphics card? (the Intel one, in this case?).
P.S.: Here I attach two Xorg logs: Xorg.0.log is the last one (without using a xorg.conf file, and using the Intel card), and the Xorg.1.log file is the one of my previous attempts at using the ATI card.

I just recently got a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and have installed Debian on it. When I installed it, I did not install the 'Graphical desktop' packages...only the 'Standard system utilities'Everything has been fine, however when I installed Xorg (aptitude install xorg) and restarted my computer, my screen goes blank at bootup. I can see the grub menu, as well as the beginning bootup process, up until udev begins to load. I have a feeling it has something to do with KMS now being loaded but am not sure.
I have this machine (motherboard ITX Jetaway NF94-270-LF based on CPU Atom N270, full specs here) as a server for some time now (about 4 years). Debian 8.1 is installed on it.
Two days ago, after a power failure, the machine was not able to complete the boot process. I attached a keyboard and a monitor (on VGA port, the motherboard also as a DVI one, but I don't have a suitable monitor) to be able to see what's happening and interact with the machine. Unluckily, at a certain point during the booting sequence the screen goes blank and the monitor goes in standby mode; apart from that, the boot process continues in the background.
As far as I can recall, this behaviour existed for at least a couple of years (if not from the beginning) and the boot process was always completed successfully until two days ago.
The screen goes blank after the setup of the keyboard mapping. I tried everything to avoid the screen going blank: in the Grub menu I set the "vga" parameter, the "nomodeset" parameter, the grub_gfxmode parameter, I removed the "quiet" option, I removed the "load_video" line, I forced the BIOS to only use the VGA port for the video and so on, in order to disable or configure differently the video and the framebuffer. All these stuff had no effect at all: the screen keeps going blank at the same point during the boot process.
The only way I was able to use a fully booted system through keyboard and monitor was via the rescue mode of the Debian 8.1 netinst image. But that way, of course, I wasn't able to observe the normal boot process. So, I checked the boot parameters of the rescue mode and I found that the only usefull parameter was "vga", which I already used and was ineffective.
I'm trying to get the latest Lenny running on some old hardware (a Winterm 3150se). Everything is working just fine except for two things.
When Gnome starts, it comes up at 1600x1200 resolution, which is too high for my monitor. It shows a portion of the right side of the display, If I select Screen Resolution, it gives me a few standard choices, but if I pick one, it acts like it's trying to honor my request, then comes back as 1600x1200 again.
My xorg.conf file had no references to Modeline, so I added a 1024x768 Modeline, not really understanding where the selection I was given was coming from. Anyway, it didn't help.
I can see in the log file that right after the entry about using xorg.conf, it says 'Module "ddc" already built-in', which must have something to do with it?
My hardware supports all the usual video formats, at least it does when it's running WinCE. Is there a way to force the use of xorg.conf or can someone tell me why DDC is acting like it's "read only"? Is DDC a file somewhere?
My other problem is that the Winterm refuses to not try to boot from the flash memory thumbdrive even though it's formatted as a non-bootable device - it's my SSDisk. I have to boot without the drive in, then slip in in just as the boot process exits the blue start screen. I can live with this problem, since it might be dumb hardware.
I just system-upgraded (testing) to kernel 2.6.38. All seems ok, except that a few things I added to xorg.conf in the past (basically, keyboard language switch) have no effect anymore. My xorg.conf is still there, it is still the same as before, but the changes I did in XkbdLayout section have no effect. It seems xorg.conf is not used anymore. I assume new version of xorg uses a different configuration file, but I'm not sure.
for some reason I got taping on touchpad is disabled after some software upgrade or something.I can enable it with synclient TapButton1=1, etc.. but have got to do it every time I reboot. Also, I don't have Xorg.conf file. Is there any way I can configure taping to work permanently ?
Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
I tried to edit my xorg.conf to try and encourage Debian to handle my joypad better (stop recognising it as a mouse). However, it didn't work and i couldn't get back into X.So, i entered recovery mode and deleted the contents of xorg.conf,got back into X and then edited xorg.conf back to how it was.Right so far so good.Yet, now i cannot use the backlash key in keyboard shortcuts. I have a number of shortcuts set up to incorporate this key and they no longer work, neither in GNOME nor Openbox
I installed debian 5 in a pc with a Intel 4 series VGA. The optimal resolution for the monitor is 1360x76, but the system does not allow that. I tried to change my xorg.conf, but got no success.In my xorg.conf I used this:
I recently tried to plug in a second monitor to my graphics card in an attempt to mess around with a dual monitor set up. This created a duplicate effect (which I expected at first) but downgraded my original monitor to the second monitors max resolution. Now my xorg.conf appears to be blank and I dont believe my fglrx drivers are working anymore.

I've just done a fresh install of Lubuntu 10.10 on an older Sony Vaio laptop. Having learned the hard way about editing xorg files, I wanted to create a backup of the xorg.conf file so that I dont have to do another install when I screw everything up. In a terminal, I typed
I'm going about my ways to get my drivers installed for my graphics card, but the page I'm using, URL>..has me apt-get install "nvidia-kernel-common".Synaptic says it doesn't exist, and it appears to be a pretty important package to have. So is there a way for somebody to get that online for me to install?
I revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.
Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?
I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.
But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.
What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.
I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

I believe the computer is trying to use the on-chip intel card instead of the nvidia card because "dmesg | grep video" specifies "pci 00:02:0: Boot video device", "lspci | grep 00:02.0" gives me "VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
I have googled this issue all day and have not found a solution that works for me. nvidia-xconfig does nothing as doesn't "nvidia-xconfig --multigpus=on". Is there a way to specify which video card my laptop uses on boot? Maybe which my xorg.conf uses?
I have a ATI Radeon HD 4000 PCIe card in my Debian system. I got the proprietary ATI drivers working (fglrx) but a kernel upgrade killed that. I was unhappy with this driver due to the very high memory usage. The card works with the non-proprietary drivers but I can only clone my desktop. I want a single desktop on two monitors.
I booted with Ubuntu Lucid and my dual monitor desktop worked out of the box without the proprietary drivers so I thought that I could emulate what Ubuntu does in Debian. But I can't.
My issue is that I don't know whether I am missing a module in the kernel or I need to set up a brand new xorg.conf. Ubuntu doesn't have an xorg.conf to copy. My default Debian doesn't either.
I have messed around with my own xorg.conf and added various drivers eg "ati" and "radeon" but I can't get it to work with a single desktop dual monitor display.
I'm always getting a blank console screen after booting a 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 kernel in squeeze. I still can read the line "Loading, please wait ..." in the display for a second - then it's completely black until X windows is starting. When I try switching from the X console to another virtual console (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 e. g.), the complete system freezes. I have to hard reboot then.When I boot the previous 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel instead, everything is fine as expected, though.There's a line "GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16@60" in /etc/default/grub as well as a line "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header. and this morning's updates broke x. I get a blank screen instead of the login. I'm running an Nvidia 7900GS. I tried re-installing the Nvidia drivers... no good. I switched to the nv drivers and got further; I got the login screen, but when I try to log in it gives me the KDE splash screen and then takes me back to the login screen. I'm not sure what to try next.

My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.
It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

I've read the how-tos (thank you oldcpu!) and wikis about how xorg.conf take precedence over the section configuration files in etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, if it exist. I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?
I'm running the ubuntu based Green OS and cant get my video card properly configured. i've already gone through the forums to figure out what i need to do to get my ATI card working but my system wont let me access the xorg.conf file. i can see it using the the GOS file editor but it wont let me save the modifications. when i attempt to edit from a terminal window with su privelages it tells me that /etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist. i've even tried booting into recovery mode and using the root instead of the sudo command. nothing i've tried will let me open the file.
My sysctl.conf in /etc isn't loaded at boot, it does however get parsed with the command # sysctl -p I believe this problem started when I got the 3.0.0 kernel just a few days ago. Does everyone has this problem? Then it's probably a bug.
I need to add an option to my xorg.conf to enable "backing store", like this:

But I don't have an xorg.conf file in Natty. There are several conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but I'm not sure which one to add it too (I can't find the Device section in any of them). I guess I don't even know if the "BackingStore" option is valid in the latext Xserver.

I want to change the resolution to 1024x768. I can do in ubuntu' display tool. The problem is that once I change it, the output does not take up the whole screen it has blank spots on the left and right side

In open suse the system sets it at 1024x768 without any blanks on the left and right corner. You can have a look at it here [url].
monitor is a Optiquest Q19wb. I normally have is set on 1280x1024, but fedora will only go to 800x600. It has detected the monitor correctly. Not sure if being connected to KVM will cause issues. The xorg.conf does not exist. Have installed system-config-display but have not run yet.
