I think I have encountered a problem in the way that lucid handles proxy servers. I was having problems running apt-get update due to a firewall at my work. I also noted that I was getting 403 Forbidden for wget. So I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy from my account (which has administrator privileges) and input the http address for the proxy server, and then clicked the button to "Apply Systemwide...".
Following that change, wget worked from my account, but whenever I tried to sudo apt-get update, I got the 403 forbidden response again, even though I could wget the same files that apt-get reported as forbidden. I figured that this was a problem with the root account, and so I typed
Code:
However, upon exiting from the root account, and trying to run sudo apt-get update again, I got the 403 forbidden code again!
So, it seems that the proxy settings are not being applied systemwide.

From the securing-debian-howto [URL] ...
"4.2.2 Security update of the kernel
First, make sure your kernel is being managed through the packaging system."
which suggests...
Code: Select all$ dpkg -S ‘readlink -f /vmlinuz‘
When I try to confirm by running the above, I get a lot of characters of output but the last line reads...
Code: Select alldpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /vmlinuz‘
How do I make sure my kernel is being managed through a packaging system?

I have squeeze using the default setup with 5 seperate partitions on hard drive. All other updates are fine but it will not install the Linux-Image-2.6.32-5-amd64. I get message that not enough room. I think this is the kernal update. I use update manager. Is there a fix for this short of resizing the partition. This is a one computer/user setup. I had this problem on a previous install of stable and ignored it thinking that it was a glitch. That install was an experimental setup and I liked it but it didn't work on the internet very well so went to testing.

I updated squeeze last night for the first time. It worked fine after 1st reboot last night. There was one reboot stalled at "hald" so I shut down and restarted. Worked ok 2nd time around
Today, upon login I got a string of taskbar notification (which I couldnt read as they all overlapped . I was able to see a kernel error message but couldnt report it (network was down) or save it (USB stick not recognised) Some programs worked, others didnt
I have the partedmagic rescue distro on USB stick so have those programs to use in order to fix the problem. Any idea how I can repair this? I tried fdisk for the hell of it. reported clean partition as predicted. I am using debian-testing-amd64-kde.

Yesterday I installed some updates on my Jessie system (I don't remember if the kernel was also updated). After rebooting the system nothing happens after the "Loading intial ramdisk"-message. If I boot in recovery mode the boot stops at the message:
Code: Select allfb: switching to nouveaufb from simple
If I add "nouveau.modeset=0" temporary to the GRUB-entry for the recovery mode, it will boot up in the console-mode.
I was able to get an ethernet connection with "dhclient eth0" and removed the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" package. Then I installed it and the removed gnome-desktop again. Before removing it, aptitude said the following to the package:
Code: Select alli A xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Now it only says:
Code: Select alli xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
But this didn't change my problem. I found a similar case in the internet, but there were no solutions for it: [URL] ....
The next thing I would do, is to install the proprietary nvidia-drivers, but since I have a GTX 960 video card, I would have to use experimental drivers. So I'm afraid to make it more worse trying to install this drivers.
Also I'm not sure if it really is a driver-specific of kernel-specific problem. My kernel is version 3.16.0-4-amd64.

I updated today and naturally removed the old nVidia driver, compiled it again after a reboot, and then rebooted again for good measure. I can log into KDE4, but all I get is a cursor and a solid black background. I deleted the ~/.kde, ~/.local, and quite a few other directories from my normal user account using the shell so KDE would reconfigure my settings when I logged in again, but it's the same problem. I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and added the "Compositing" section with "Enabled=false" to rule out compositing. Now when I log into the system I get the default KDE4 wallpaper and a mouse cursor, but nothing else. I believe the latest update broke KDE4, or am I missing something? I have recreated my xorg.conf as well, and only set it to use the nVidia driver. So what can I do now?

I have the latest version of Debian installed on a Poweredge 1600SC. Everything is working ok, but the Adaptec AAR 2410sa PCI SATA card has started being a bit weird. I have a 1TB drive connected to it and noticed that occasionally it was unmounting the drive and messages appeared in the /var/log/messages like the following:
Jun 10 23:50:57 servertron kernel: [11246.006500] sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE,SUGGEST_OK
Jun 10 23:50:57 servertron kernel: [11246.006500] sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]
Jun 10 23:50:57 servertron kernel: [11246.006500] sd 1:0:2:0: [sdd] Add. Sense: Internal target failure
After a reboot everything would be fine. I did some research and heard that it could be the drive failing, so after running a disk check etc I connected up a new 1TB drive (was getting low anyway) to another SATA interface on the card and started trying to copy from one drive to another. Lo and behold, it happened on the new drive as well. Bugger.
I haven't had time to open it up and check the connections and will be doing this shortly, but thought I would check to see if it was using the best/newest driver, but am a bit stuck as to where to start. I've looked through some docs and help but can't really see how to update and check hardware drivers in debian.
lspci shows the following:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Broadcom GCNB-LE Host Bridge (rev 01)
00:00.1 Host bridge: Broadcom GCNB-LE Host Bridge
00:02.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
[code]....
Is there a newer version of accraid I can use? Even if there isn't, how would I go about identifying which driver the card is using and installing an update?

So I just installed Debian Lenny on my PC (the install went fine). After installing, I went into aptitude and noticed that most of the packages available in the repository are out of date (python 2.5, GCC 4.3). System Update tells me that I am up to date, and when I tell synaptic/aptitude to mark all updatable packages, it does nothing. I have tried typing apt-get update as root aswell. Nothing worked.
I installed Debian with the first DVD from [URL]. During the installation, I told it to download anything that wasn't on the DVD. Shortly after installing, I had manually edited my /etc/apt/sources.list and commented out the CD line. Could any of this have messed up APT?

I've got Opera for Linux on my Debian Lenny system, installed by adding their repository to my APT config, and it works great. Just recently there was an update. When I downloaded it, it could not install because the signature could not be verified.
W: GPG error: [url] lenny Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY F9A2F76A9D1A0061
Why would that happen now when I already had the repository correctly setup in my apt files? I tried re-installing the key and that didn't change anything. Is there a problem with a public key server somewhere?

I run a Squid 3 server that is acting as a web filter. It worked fine on Etch. The system stopped working properly due to two of the three SATA cables being bad. Before I figured that out, I tried doing updates. Since Etch updates were no longer available, I did a distupgrade to Lenny. Immediately, Squid stopped working properly. It would take up to two and a half minutes for it to respond to a web request and add it to the access.log. This was using the same configuration file that it was using before the update.
After I found the hardware problem, I did a clean install of Lenny. I used the basic squid.conf like I did on the previous system, only changing it to add my ACLs and because it wasn't saving an access.log to the default location unless I uncommented the path directive. Now, it won't respond to a request at all. Forwarding is enabled and the firewall seems to be set up correctly.

If I should have put this in the beginners forum, I'm new to Debian but not to linux having used Slackware for some years. My problem is a kernal thing I think so probably best posted here.
I'm trying Debian because of the belief that I can use the Edinburgh Speech Software easier for my project work, also I wanted to use xen if possible. Having installed Debian Lenny amd64, the sound wasn't working on the machine but after installing the bpo the sound worked. The next thing to do was to try to install xen. Following an install of xen, the sound no longer works in the xen image, though I can still boot into the bpo kernel and get sound alright. When I boot into any kernel now I get a kernel failure problem just after I have logged in (Your system had a kernel failure),, though I can still go on with things - this happens whichever kernel I try to use. However the kernel which is last in the list I have pasted below (Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-1-xen-amd64), will not run at all and complains so:
Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format
On boot with all kernels I also get the message: Failed to read splash image ((hd0,0)//grub/splash.xpm.gz), which I didn't get before the xen installation. Something I thought to try was to install lenny again, then install the xen parts and then after this install thb bpo upgrade, but I am thinking this will not particularly work - if I did this and ended up with a working bpo kernel/boot, would this boot option include the xen functionality or not?

I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:
00-debian_sources.list
deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
[code]....
All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.

While I've been using Debian for various years, I have never actually used Stable. No Stable means no Backports, and I have a doubt about the latter. After reading Backports's documentation and the APT Preferences's manual page, I understand that, as of Squeeze, a backport must be installed manually, and that already installed backports are automatically updated. Also, because Backports archives have a pin-priority of 1, one cannot update all installed packages to the versions available in Backports.
I guess that one could achieve it by giving the Backports archive a pin-priority of 991. However, using the whole Backports repository is discouraged everywhere, and I don't really know why. How serious are these warnings? Does it cause a dependency Hell or is it just a warning for novice users?

I have used Debian on this computer for over a year now. A little while back update manager stopped working. It now prompts me to update a varying number of packages (85-97), but when I try and run it I get this message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I'm not sure where to report this. I'm the only user of this computer. I tried running dpkg as directed, but that results in the following:
shop-amd-rebuild:/home/steve# dpkg --configure -a
Setting up linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 (2.6.26-26lenny1) ...
Running depmod.
Running mkinitramfs-kpkg.

I'd sure like to update, and not reinstall.

My problem is KeyTouch worked great with KDE 3.5.x but now it doesn't work with KDE 4.x.x. Has anyone managed to get KeyTouch to work with KDE 4.x.x? Is it broken or am I missing some kind of trick to get it to work?

My touchpad just stopped working recently. It works in the framebuffer console, cat /dev/input/mice gives sensible output, X -retro shows a moving cross and it is completely functional during the gdm login prompt. But for some reason, it just stops responding halfway through the login process (roughly at the same time as gnome complains about my old laptop battery, if that is any help.) I run Debian Squeeze with Linux 2.6.32-5-686. The touchpad is a Synaptics PS/2 pad according to Xorg.
I do not understand the problem, actually. X seems unwilling to talk to my touchpad for some reason. When I run X manually from single-user mode, it complains that it cannot talk to my touchpad, but it works in the -retro test mode. As soon as gnome kicks in however, it stops working. synclient -l gives sensible output.
My external USB mouse works just fine.
