CentOS 5 :: Enabling Vga-out On A Laptop?

Mar 17, 2009

doc/tip/web page with some info on how to enable the vga-out port on my laptop?

I need it so I can hook it to a projector when I'm teaching a class or giving a presentation

I've read the centos on laptos wiki but I found nothing of assistance.

I'm using centos 5.2 on an HP 550 laptop, everything else works like a charm

Debian Hardware :: Enabling A Pointing Stick On Laptop

Jun 3, 2015

I have a Dell Latitude D400 laptop running Wheezy (I can't upgrade to Jesse at the moment) and I want to try out the Pointing Stick on my keyboard. If you Google "Pointing Stick" you can find images of it. It's located in the middle of the "G", "H", and "B" keys. Now it doesn't do squat so I'd like to enable the Pointing Stick. How exactly would I do that?

I'm not looking to use it full time, I just want to play around with it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Enabling Wifi In Laptop For Other Devices When Connected To Wired Network

Jul 14, 2010

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

CentOS 5 :: Enabling VNC To Work With Display 0

I am trying to get VNC to work with display 0 on CentOS 5.2.In the past, I had always used the information straight from realvnc,URL... which is straighforward and simple, but this doesn't seem to work with CentOS 5. Once I attempt to connect to the server, it locks up.I have searched around and found the following info for CentOS 5, but I can't get it to work. The info seems very unclear and cumbersome to get display 0 configured.Has anyone gotten the RealVNC method to work on CentOS 5?

CentOS 5 Networking :: DNS Is SLOW After Enabling/disabling NetworkManager?

Mar 30, 2010

I ran into this today accidentally turned on networkmanager and it took it upon itself to rewrite some things and proceeded to make any DNS lookups on my server Especially those reverse DNS for SSH and SFTP take so long they would just time out instead of completing.. Disabling networkmanager did not undo the damage either. Short fix, Erase your resolv.conf file and add 2 lines to it as so, your nameservers!

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
save, and run the following commands
service network restart
service httpd restart
service sshd restart

Mine had a search line added by networkmanager and some others, when i reverted it back to as above, almost instantly after restarting the services the systems lookups were once again, lightning fast. DNS lookups were taking upwards of 20 seconds for unknown reasons after this happenned

Does anyone have any experience with this or a similar model?

Can anyone suggest a laptop that they know is highly compatible with CentOS 5.6?

Another laptop with fedora 10 installed finds the network, so the problem is not the network. I guess it's a problem with the wireless driver / firmware, as i had this problem on fedora some time ago, and i've solved installing the firmware. Now i've installed the firmware, i rebooted, and it still doesn't find any network.

CentOS 5 :: X Windows Extremely Dim Screen On Laptop After 5.5 X64 Install

Jun 4, 2010

I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.

Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.

The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

P.S. System specific details are below.

lspci gives the following output:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02 )
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)

CentOS 5 :: Laptop Automatic Shutdown On Low Battery Not Working

Aug 28, 2010

I'm trying to make my system automatically shutdown once the battery level is low, but still without success. I've tried kpowersave, gnome-power-manager, kpower, klaptop but none of these worked for me. Well, I can't imagine I would be that stupid, but simply it doesn't work. In all cases mentioned above (kpower, klaptop, gnome-power-manager) I've tried to setup the laptop to shutdown once the defined level is reached, but the laptop never actually switched off unless all the battery was drained.

Btw. I think all the above mentioned apps only work once the user is logged in. But I'd like the solution to work also when the PC is on without anyone logged in. I thought I could write a bash script based on parsing of acpitools output and define it as a service, which would monitor the battery level, but I simply don't believe there isn't any functional solution to this.
