View 4 RepliesI am a new user, and installed opensuse 11.3 on my desktop pc about a week ago, now the problem with my computer is this that the graphical performance is very slow, I have Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor, with 512 mb ram plus a shared graphic card memory of 32 mb on an IBM thinkcentre. The default graphic driver loaded (as seen through YASt hardware information) is i915 while I read somewhere that default driver for this accelerator is intel. I get about 60 FPS on Glx gears while after applying vesa it goes to about 200 FPS. With default driver the CPU usage is head aching. I created a manual xorg.conf file via Xorg -configure command and set the driver intel and then intellegacy with gaining no boost in performance. The glxinfo says 3D Rendering being enabled while KWIN's desktop effects are too slow and laggy. The CPU keeps working at about 70-100% while movies on ..... and vlc/kaffeine are being played unsmoothly. On the same system, the Kubuntu Live 8.04 gives 500 FPS in glxgears.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried out Xubuntu 10.10 on one of my older computers. Got it installed without a problem. Added the restricted driver module that I needed Nvidia, added the Compiz settings manager, but I cant seem to find a way to enable desktop effects. I realize that Xubuntu uses the XFCE window manger which is sort of light weight compared to Gnome or KDE, so I am asking if anyone has managed to get the desktop effects running in a similar environment. I checked and observed that the nvidia module has been loaded.

I have disabled compiz and now have no 3D desktop effects, but still cannot alter the desktop icon size. What have I done?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 on my Compaq Presario SR1230NX. Anyway, everytime I try to enable desktop effects, my computer would freeze. I own a Compaq Presario and here's the info I got on the intergrated video card...thingy. XD
Code:

Ubuntu works fine until I enable the visual effects to EXTRA. The computer then freezes, no mouse response, no keyboard response, have to hard restart.
These info might help you.

I went to System--> Administration --> Hardware drivers and it says, no proprietary drivers are in use in this system
im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed openSuse 11.2 KDE in a Dell 1535 laptop.
I tried to enable the Cube desktop feature through desktop settings and when I pressed the apply button the system crashed. The screen freezed and the laptop wasn't responding to anything.
So I rebooted the laptop and now every time gets stack in the green screen and trying to load but it never does. I suspect that it has to do with my ATI card because a couple of 3d games would crash the system too. I tried some solutions that I found here like disabling the desktop effects by tweaking kwinrc file but it didn't worked.
Does anyone know how to disable that Cube feature from failsafe mode?
I installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.
But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.
how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.

I have a C application in which I was happily using stdint.h and other useful things like UINT32_MAX. Now, I am trying to move over to C++. Turns out, C++ does not support C99 and there is no equivalent header file (like climits for limits.h). So is there a way to enable C99 types in C++? Or any other equivalent header files?

I've been using Fedora for quite awhile now, and thought I should move onto a different Distro. I'm used to the command "yum", and so this is all new. My hardware in my computer isn't that bad, but my graphics card is pretty old. I'm using the "radeon" driver because my card is an ATIx700 Pro. The proprietary driver won't work. The question I have is: Where are the Desktop Effects?Even with my "radeon" driver, It is able to run. I've had it on Suse and Fedora.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran into this today accidentally turned on networkmanager and it took it upon itself to rewrite some things and proceeded to make any DNS lookups on my server Especially those reverse DNS for SSH and SFTP take so long they would just time out instead of completing.. Disabling networkmanager did not undo the damage either. Short fix, Erase your resolv.conf file and add 2 lines to it as so, your nameservers!
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
save, and run the following commands
service network restart
service httpd restart
service sshd restart
Mine had a search line added by networkmanager and some others, when i reverted it back to as above, almost instantly after restarting the services the systems lookups were once again, lightning fast. DNS lookups were taking upwards of 20 seconds for unknown reasons after this happenned

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just recently come back to Fedora from OpenSuSE, where all of my compositing worked beautifully before my hard disk took a big dump. Now that I have Fedora 13 installed, I've gone through the ridiculous hassle of eliminating nouveau so that my NVIDIA drivers can do all the work. Everything seems fine except that some of the animations of desktop effects are very slow and choppy. For example, the minimize window animation looks great, but upon un-minimizing, the animation gets choppy and slow. Same with the slide animation for the dialogue windows. Transitions of the desktop cube work just fine. Show windows animation works good on zoom out, but zooming back in is slow and choppy.
I'm quite puzzled here. Originally I used the NVIDIA driver from rpmfusion. I've had troubles before (with OpenSuSE) with the version in the repos, so I tried installing the latest version from the NVIDIA website. No changes though.

After I updated to KDE 4.5.3 in Fedora 13 I've had 2 things stop starting up when I boot up. They were working fine before the KDE update.
The first is desktop effects. I turn it on, but once I reboot then desktop effects are disabled again. When I turn them on I get a KWin message that it has been turned off by another application. How can I find out which application that is and why?
The second is Yakuake, which I want to start automatically when I boot up. I don't see where I can set it up to start automatically (and I don't remember how I did it before, or if it was automatic when I installed it).
UPDATE: I just found the autostart configuration and added Yakuake. It worked, now it runs whenever I start.
I am trying to active desktop effects but when i click resume desktop effects the kwin says : desktop effects have been suspended by another application I am using Kde & fedpra 14
