Hardware :: Laptop That Works Well With CentOS 5.6?
Apr 12, 2011
I am looking for a laptop to use as a test environment for CentOS 5.6. The machine itself does not need to be that powerful but I would like it to be as compatible as possible.
I am currently looking at this model on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246075
Does anyone have any experience with this or a similar model?
Can anyone suggest a laptop that they know is highly compatible with CentOS 5.6?

I'm having the following issues with my laptop -- left ALT key never works. ever. that means I have to do shortcuts with the right ALT key which irritates me.- right click on trackpad works sporadically, and only after I push it a few times. most of the time, it doesn't work. This issue has popped up since Jaunty beta and has never been totally resolvedOutput of uname -aLinux tarantino 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio VPCEE2E1E. I've been able to avoid any major problems, however, my onboard sound doesn't work. I've tried plugging speakers into the laptop and this works perfectly. I'm rather confused as to why the onboard sound isn't working though.
Here's the output for lspci on my machine:
Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC259 Analog [ALC259 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on both my laptop and desktop. I've gotten a Gigaware Webcam with Mic (Radio Shack) 25-157 camera to work out of the box on my Del E-1505, no problems. Even interfaces with Skype correctly.
On my desktop, though, the camera light comes on, the camera is recognized through lsusb:
Code:
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 093a:2620 Pixart Imaging, Inc. and /dev/video0 exists, but I can't access it through VLC or Skype.

I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad X201i. The problem I have is (since I've installed Xubuntu) every time I start up my laptop it just hangs with a little flashing white stripe in the top of the left corner (like every start up). Then when I shut down the laptop using the power button and start it up again it works. How can this be possible? On start up, it hangs, while on the restart it always works. Which means I have to restart my laptop every single time.

After searching/googling for information related to the topic, I haven't been able to get this working in KDE. Background: I have a Dell Studio 1745 with builtin Intel 5100bg wireless card. It connects to my Linksys WRT54G router just fine in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 using either KDE or Gnome. In Fedora 13 it only connects under Gnome, not KDE. Those are using NetworkManager. Using traditional ifup only works in Fedora under Gnome, i.e. nothing works under KDE in Fedora.

If I ssh from my laptop (running F10) to the server (centos 5.2) it asks for the password, but everytime I enter the correct password it says incorrect password. when I do the same from the server to my laptop I can get in just fine. I think my passwords are stored as ssha in the LDAP (I tried clear passwords and that dosen't work either).

I wanted to know if I boot Linux from a USB Memory stick installed on my ASUS dual core desktop, will it run on my Asus Eee pc 10 inch laptop? Looking at Alpine Linux, Fusion Linux, Mint 10 bases on Debian, Fuduntu and Slackware. I expect I will be able to install to USB and boot from USB at will. I have made an Ubuntu Netbook USB drive with Universal USB Installer, but never run it, over the passed two weeks, I was under the impression that it would install to a hard drive, but suspect, it is the OS inside, what is the case? Been using CentOS for a couple of weeks and have a few quirks I need help with.
This is a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I'd love for VNC Server to start up as soon as the computer reboots. It seems my VNC Server only works when I log in using the GUI at the computer itself. After a reboot I can remotely SSH into it successfully, but cannot VNC to it. I then have to physically get to the computer and log into the GUI, and wa-la I can VNC to it. I have not edited any conf files - seeing as my last attempt at getting this working got me nowhere. I have only enabled Remote Desktop through the GUI.

(Second Try) I installed CentOS 5.5 from CDs 32 bit, everything works fine. I then re-install, but this time 64 bit, everything else is the same, I use all of the same options. This time though it sees the network card, and allows me to configure it and activate it. It will not connect outside of it's self, IE it can ping it's self, but nothing else. Go back to 32 bit, and zero problems, try 64 again, no network. Each time I do full installs with partition formatting etc. In case it makes hill-o-beans difference, Intel P4, 2.66 Ghz. 2.0 GB RAM MSi Motherboard.

I was puzzling over the nss dependence problem that people are having in upgrading 5.2 to 5.3. The issue is clear (that the mirror people are using for [updates] is not pointing to the latest set when an uptodate mirror may be being used for your [base]). My question is though how the mirror list decides whether a mirror is fresh. According to [URL] then this mirror [URL] is "green" which presumably means that the system thinks it is up to date (last probe was 1 hour ago). However if you look at the files on the mirror now (12:54 BST, Apr 1 2009) you see that the date of the 5/ branch is 24-Jun-2008. Thus this host is not ready to give you updates to 5.3. Is this a bug?

I am trying to build a server based on an ASUS P5BV-C, which has dual-Marvell 80856 Gig-E ethernet controllers. If I boot into rescue mode, using CentOS 5.3, x86_64, disc 1, I can start eth0, and it configures via dhcp. No problems.
If I boot the same disk with 'linux askmethod' and select http as the install method, it tries to start eth0, then times out trying to get dhcp. Checking tty3 (or 4, i forget) indicates the eth0 link is up, but no communication. Manual configuration doesn't work either.

I have an Intel i7 with CentOS x64 installed, with the intention of using it as the host O/S with VMWare Workstation to run a number of virtual machines. I had this all working until the kernel was updated to 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, Now I can no longer start any VMs. I have tried reinstalling CentOS, updating it first, then installing VMWare Workstation - no different. I have tried running as root - no different.
Is anyone else aware of this problem? Does anyone else run VMWare on CentOS x64?

I've been using Linux for about 2 years now, mostly Ubuntu & derivatives, but I've also tried Fedora, Mandriva, and others. I wanted to give CentOS a try because I'm very interested in going for a Linux+ or similar certification, and so I'm looking to start learning how to configure & maintain Linux servers and so on. I have a friend who's a Linux sysadmin, and he recommended CentOS as a good learning tool.
Anyway, I've only got a wireless connection in my office at home (the actual cable modem is downstairs) so I intentionally chose a wireless adapter that would work with Linux -- it has a Realtek RLT8187 chip, for which there is support built into the kernel, or so I've read. It has worked out of the box in just about every distro I've tried, and indeed it worked OOTB when I tried out the CentOS 5.5 live CD.
However, when I actually installed the CentOS to my hard drive it no longer worked -- I have only a greyed out option for a wired connection (presumably since my motherboard has an ethernet adapter, but there is no connection). Why the wireless would work in the live session but not after install? Is there a firmware file or something I need to track down? I did look on this page, but it doesn't mention anything about RTL8187.

Just recently instralled CentOS 5.3 and I'm loving it! Not a pro by all means in linux, but i do know my way around a bit (previously used RHEL, Fedora and Ubuntu distros).
As my topic states, for some stupid reason Flash works just fine in Xfce, but when i change desktop environments it comes up with the screen "You need to install Adobe Flash Player 8" or something to that effect. Seriously... the f**k?!
Mind you I only found that by mistake - spent all night reading faqs, blogs, fora etc. trying to get the bloody thing working in KDE - full of obsolete tips and URLs unfortunately (plenty of help running 32-bit flash in 64-bit kernel!). I then changed to Xfce to check something else, and it worked fine, no warnings!!

I run a CentOS 5.1 using VMServer on XP. From home I can successfully 'cvs login' to my CVS server. But starting 'cvs update', the connection times out.
Netstat shows the connection as established:
# netstat -an | grep 2401
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.35:58651 85.25.xx.xx:2401 ESTABLISHED
CVS server is domain managed with dnsalias service (dyndns.org)
Using the same computer at work (other ISP) I have no problems - cvs update works just fine.
Can I assume that it is not a port/firewall issue, since "cvs login" is successful? Any clues where to start diggin'?

I have more than a dozen servers running CentOS (mostly supermicro servers) everytime i do mkfs.ext3 or mkfs.ext4, it always hangs the server (nothing is responding, not even the terminal) can't even do Ctrl+C to kill it. but the funny thing is, if i leave it on for hours, it'll finish eventually.
this puzzles me, i've tried so many different SATA drives and different servers, different kernels, different CentOS. for example purposes, my CentOS 5.3 runs 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5 kernel. i also have 5.4 and 5.5. mkfs.ext3 works fine on SAS, but always hangs on SATA. here's where it usually hangs Writing inode tables: 2126/7453

I developed a bootable Kickstart USB Stick earlier that works flawlessly on a HP7700 computer with a 750 GB drive but when I use the exact same USB Stick on a HP8000 computer with 2 - 2 TB drives, the systems hangs after loading initrd.img
I have searched with my friend Google high and low have been unable to find a solution. I have tried adding acpi=off and maxcpus=1 to the Append line in the syslinux.cfg without success.
As a workaround I created a bootable DVD which I then pointed to the USB Stick to load in the Kickstart configuration but would really prefer to use a single USB stick to perform this task.
Below I have pasted the output of the lshw commands for the HP7700 and HP8000 thinking there must be something in the hardware causing the problem.
what needs to change in the kickstart config to allow this new hardware to work with my bootable Kickstart USB Stick.
LSHW for HP7700 (the pc that works):
