CentOS 5 :: Enabling VNC To Work With Display 0
Feb 7, 2009
I am trying to get VNC to work with display 0 on CentOS 5.2.In the past, I had always used the information straight from realvnc,URL... which is straighforward and simple, but this doesn't seem to work with CentOS 5. Once I attempt to connect to the server, it locks up.I have searched around and found the following info for CentOS 5, but I can't get it to work. The info seems very unclear and cumbersome to get display 0 configured.Has anyone gotten the RealVNC method to work on CentOS 5?

I have 32-bit Windows XP and Centos 5.5 x86_64 on my dual-boot PC, equipped with two generic LCD monitors, Dell (primary) and HP (secondary). I have been running dual screen displays without any problem when running Windows, however no luck getting them to work when I boot up with my newly installed Centos 5.5
In both Gnome and KDE both monitors light up, but secondary monitor (HP) is just a clone of the primary. I have tried setting "Dual Head" in the Display adminitrator but the resulting xorg.conf causes a "Entity is already in use" error and crashes. I have also tried just adding Option "TwinView" "on" but it does nothing. (Are "Dual Head" and "Twin View" exactly the same concept?)
What I am doing wrong? I checked the FAQ and did not find any similar problems being discussed.
Below is my getinfo.sh driver info
== BEGIN uname -rmi ==
2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.centos.plusxen x86_64 x86_64
== END uname -rmi ==
== BEGIN rpm -q centos-release ==

I have a C application in which I was happily using stdint.h and other useful things like UINT32_MAX. Now, I am trying to move over to C++. Turns out, C++ does not support C99 and there is no equivalent header file (like climits for limits.h). So is there a way to enable C99 types in C++? Or any other equivalent header files?

I have some init scripts that launch some daemons that I wrote. I want Linux to generate a coredump anytime something crashes. I activated coredumps in /etc/security/limits.conf by adding the next line:
* hard core 100000 After rebooting, I run ulimit -a and I can see that coredumps are not activated: > root@computer:~# ulimit -a > core file size (blocks, -c) 0 First, I checked if there is any file script on my system that deactivates coredumps (greping ulimit -c 0 ), but I didn't find anything so far.
Then, I created a bogus c program..to double check if it's working, and I can confirm that it's not. The program is this

I ran into this today accidentally turned on networkmanager and it took it upon itself to rewrite some things and proceeded to make any DNS lookups on my server Especially those reverse DNS for SSH and SFTP take so long they would just time out instead of completing.. Disabling networkmanager did not undo the damage either. Short fix, Erase your resolv.conf file and add 2 lines to it as so, your nameservers!
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
save, and run the following commands
service network restart
service httpd restart
service sshd restart
Mine had a search line added by networkmanager and some others, when i reverted it back to as above, almost instantly after restarting the services the systems lookups were once again, lightning fast. DNS lookups were taking upwards of 20 seconds for unknown reasons after this happenned

i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

I have been working on an IBM thinkpad model t23, installed Ubuntu, that was working good, I was having troubles getting the wireless to work,but it would get online with lan cable. It was telling me that I had some bad sectors in my hard drive, so I pulled the drive to get the info from it, and now, when I reinstalled it, turned it on, it goes through all the motions, but there is no display.

Not sure how to explain it.. if I line up my screen perfectly with the light it absorbs just about enough light to make out the outline of the login screen.. seems like the pixels are setting the right colors but the light in the screen isn't turning on if that is possible. If I enter the GRUB menu and load 2.6.35-28-generic it works fine.. the latest doesn't though... so the question.
1) How do I fix this for the latest version?
- or -
2) How do I auto-load the 2.6.35-28-generic version permanently?

I've just completed my first pc build, and installed Ubuntu 8.2. My build was focussed around a legacy Apple Cinema 30" display, which has 2560x1600 @ 60fps resolution. The motherboard - Gigabyte H97N-Wifi - supports that display, although the display drivers are supplied by Intel, and are therefore nonfree. On startup, my display resolution defaults to 1200x800. This is what /var/log/Xorg.0.log says about it:
Code: Select all[snip]
[ Â Â Â Â 1.830] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section
[ Â Â Â Â 1.881] (II) intel(0): Output HDMI1 has no monitor section

I bumped into a webpage which stated that xrandr does not work with proprietary drivers, and if that's true, I can't get it to change resolution on my screen.

I have fedora 10 and I rotated my display upside down using Display settings (I don't know if it is the same thing as system-config-display, I had an icon called Display settings on my panel). It didn't work, my screen became black and now I can't change it back. Can I somehow change it back using terminal only? There's no rotation set in my xorg.conf file, I tried to set different rotation in xorg.conf, but it had no effect.

I am trying to set up an unused machine as a web server for my students.
I originaly tried with Redhat 9 and had the same problems. I am using an HP Pentium 4 system with 2 network cards.
1) The built in Realtek RTL8139 configured as eth0.
2) An add in Broadcom BCM5782 Gigabit card that was added I presume when the built in card failed (we have a number of machines like this around the school), configured as eth1.
I did not realize the second card was installed when I had Red hat 9 on the system, but I discovered it after installing centos 5.5. I have tried to configure the system to use DHCP with and without getting the DNS from the provider, and both ways the system complains that there is no connection, check the cable, so it will not activate the device.
When I configure the device to use a fixed IP, I can configure the device, but I can't ping anything on the network other than myself. I suppose it is possible that both network cards have failed, but I get green link lights with both cards, when I connect them to my router, so I am at a loss as to why neither board seems to work. I don't have a spare network card to slide in because the computer takes a special mini card. Is there an easy way to test the board to see if the board is a problem?

I had some crackling sound I thought I would remove some ALSA drivers and re-install them. Somehow, in the process, my computer rebooted itself and I am stuck with the classic "ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode".
Attempting to actually get graphics does not work. A CTRL-ALT-F7 yeilds the ubuntu loading screen with dots filling but it stays there eternally. I can however access my console login and am able to execute terminal commands.
I have tried a few things to no avail such as:
sudo apt-get update
sudp apt-get install nvidia-current
I run a Nvidia Geforce250.

I just purchased a new notebook, namely an HP Pavilion dv6, with a GeForce GT 230M. Also, I have a neat 1920x1200 display with an HDMI connector, which fits nicely with the corresponding outlet on the computer. Now I'd like the external display to be the main display when connected, with the internal display as an expansion to the desktop, and the internal display should, obviously, be primary when on its own.
The reality looks quite different: Not too surprising, with the default drivers I got only a 800x600 resolution, but with the correct drivers installed, I got the full resolution on the integrated display. My external HDMI-display, however, is dead. With the xorg.conf file being obsolete I can't really use the configuration app by nvidia, can I?

I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge.This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios.It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:
ifcfg-br0:
DEVICE=br0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
