Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Get Working Driver For Radeon HD5870 On CentOS

Oct 27, 2010

I installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit version. After (and during) the installation my graphic card couldn't be recognized. The resolution was way below the native (1920*1080), windows moved pretty slowly and scrolling was even slower.I updated the system - didn't solve the problem. After the update I tried to select the 'radeon' driver from Administration->Display, but after the restart the X server crashed and recovered to the previous configuration (vesa). I tried to install the official AMD Catalyst driver, and after the restart the native resolution was detected, but the interface begun to work even slower (very difficult to move windows and scroll text). The Catalyst control panel couldn't be opened as well.

Hardware :: ATI Radeon 57xx Using HDMI Overscan (CentOS 5.5 X86_64)?

Feb 9, 2011

So, I need to use the HDMI out on my Radeon 57xx because the DVI input on my monitor is in use by another machine that has no other way to connect to it, and I won't swap cables around all the time. Of course, because someone somewhere decided that if it's plugged in to HDMI it must be a TV and have overscan issues I have a nice black box surrounding my screen image.

In Windows I can resolve this by opening CCC and changing the overdrive settings. Thus far I have yet to be able to get CCC to open and the only thing the console tool allows you to do is toggle overscan on and off, which doesn't seem to have any effect so far. Has anyone gotten this issue resolved? Do I need to focus on getting CCC working (which I probably won't use for anything else...) or is there a console command that can handle the job? Change to xorg.conf? Anything?

Fedora Hardware :: Replacing Radeon 9550 With Radeon X1300/X1550 - Low FPS

Apr 4, 2010

I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.

My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.

Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.

What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:

1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf
2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...

I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...

I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com

POST UPDATE:

When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!

Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...

CentOS 5 :: X Windows Extremely Dim Screen On Laptop After 5.5 X64 Install

Jun 4, 2010

I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.

Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.

The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

P.S. System specific details are below.

lspci gives the following output:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02 )
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)

CentOS 5 :: Laptop Automatic Shutdown On Low Battery Not Working

Aug 28, 2010

I'm trying to make my system automatically shutdown once the battery level is low, but still without success. I've tried kpowersave, gnome-power-manager, kpower, klaptop but none of these worked for me. Well, I can't imagine I would be that stupid, but simply it doesn't work. In all cases mentioned above (kpower, klaptop, gnome-power-manager) I've tried to setup the laptop to shutdown once the defined level is reached, but the laptop never actually switched off unless all the battery was drained.

Btw. I think all the above mentioned apps only work once the user is logged in. But I'd like the solution to work also when the PC is on without anyone logged in. I thought I could write a bash script based on parsing of acpitools output and define it as a service, which would monitor the battery level, but I simply don't believe there isn't any functional solution to this.
