CentOS 5 :: X Windows Extremely Dim Screen On Laptop After 5.5 X64 Install

Jun 4, 2010

I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.

Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.

The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

P.S. System specific details are below.

lspci gives the following output:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02 )
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)

A few times it is came up with a warning while shutting down for a split second saying a extremely high temperature and shutting down seconds later. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 with Nvidia Geforce with Cuda. I have tried reinstalling Ubuntu, installing Fedora... Nothing I have tried has worked.

Ubuntu :: Booting Into Live Environment Screen Is Extremely Dark?

Apr 18, 2011

I have a Gateway NV59C09u laptop, I tried running both maverick and the latest beta of natty as live usb's to no avail. It boots fine, but at the first screen the light is so dark that I can't really read anything nor see the mouse pointer, I can just barely make out a window-looking thing. Trying to increase the brightness using my F-keys doesn't do anything.

It's gotta be some kind of graphics related issue, because booting the alternate iso works fine. If I could figure out a way to boot the ubuntu-desktop live image via a different video driver that would probably work, but I'm not sure how to do that (ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing).

CentOS 5 :: SSH Is Working Extremely Slow, But Only Off-network?

Mar 4, 2009

SSH access works fine from a LAN computer, but anything over the internet is extremely slow or times out. We're talking a good 1-2 minutes just to get the login prompt! This is a new installation, I switched from Fedora to CentOS. Previously, SSH from off-network worked perfectly fine with Fedora. What could it be? All other network services on this machine are working properly and at normal speeds, it's just SSH that is not willing to cooperate.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot See Screen With New SL Linux Install On Old Laptop

Sep 16, 2010

I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.

The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.

I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).

I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.

Networking :: Internet Connection Fine In Windows Extremely Slow In Fedora 14

Dec 10, 2010

I've been troubleshooting this problem for several hours now and I'm out of ideas. My internet connection is fine in Windows 7 but an older computer I resurrected (AMD Athlon 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Fedora 14 Security Lab Spin) is having the stop-and-go's with its internet connection. It will work for very briefly, then it gets extremely slow, where any page I try to navigate to in Firefox 3.6 takes forever to load.I have a DSL connection and my DSL modem is connected to a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I set up a static IP in Windows but don't know how to do this yet in Fedora 14, and I need to get my internet connection working so I can troubleshoot further, but with it being so slow, I'm having to use Windows to search for problems and then switch over to the Fedora box via KVM (IOGEAR), which I also just started using. I don't think that would be related, but who knows.

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0 - Getting Extremely Slow Read / Write Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I am new to Centos and linux in general. I have just got myself a Dell 1950 server with 2x 1T SATA2 hard disks in it. now the server comes with a PERC5i Raid card with 512Mb. Well I put these in raid 0 and the raid card initilzed the disks to 128 writeback and read ahead. When I loaded centos it did not recognize the dell layout so therefore wanted to initalize it again, so I done this as it wanted. Now I created a 80gb boot and o/s partition and a 100gb swap the rest was created into LVM space to run solus vmwear. But I found the raid 0 to be getting extreamly slow read and write speeds.

Example same disks
Desktop PC max 214mb/s windows vista 64
Server with centos 104mb/s

Now I am not sure but I am told that I need to align the o/s with the raid card settings but I have no idea how to do this. How to do this in plain easy step by step instructions. I mean how to calculate it, how to format the disk this way, and what files to edit where if needed. I have spent hours trying to figure out why my raid 0 is slower than a single disk.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Fresh Install Of Centos Doesnt Display On Whole Screen?

Jun 8, 2009

i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

Software :: Virtualbox Locks Laptop When I Try To Install Windows Xp / Fix It?

May 30, 2010

I have a dell computer that runs kubuntu very nicely. Virtualbox runs in it great and i installed windows xp in a breeze.

My dell laptop however freezes up when i try to boot my windows install cd. I'm running kubuntu on it as well (both run 10.04) and both were just freshly installed with kubuntu.

I just can't boot the cd for some reason. Laptop totally locks up and you have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.

It's an amd turion 64 x2 dual core processor in my laptop, whereas my desktop is an intel e5200 cpu. That's the only thing i can think of that might require special settings or something in virtualbox. I've played around with all the cpu settings in virtualbox, but every single time, it totally locks up the computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can No Longer Install Windows On My Laptop / Solve This?

Jul 7, 2010

Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.

What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:

Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.

So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Screen Not Shutting Off When Laptop Lid Closed?

When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

OpenSUSE Install :: Extremely High CPU Usage?

However, I would like to ask if anyone else is experiencing Higher than normal CPU usage with openSuSE 11.4 PR?? My system, which is probably similar to others, increases the air flow with the fan on the CPU when it is working hard. Mine gets rather noisy. (don't have it on the floor, but right next to me) This fan speed increase has been lots more prevalent in the newest version of openSuSE.

Have also used 'top' and it looks like xorg is one of the biggest hogs. However, when I use VMware it goes into hyper drive a lot.

Ubuntu :: Extremely Unstable Maverick Install

Nov 7, 2010

As was requested, I installed ubuntu maverick on a desktop computer that was having problems. I installed maverick (32-bit), and it crashes usually during or after software installation.

The specs of the computer:
Pentium D processor
1GB RAM
Intel integrated graphics card
160GB HDD, 40GB ext4 ubuntu partition

The only problem I can think of is that I've had stability issues on ext4. I *think* Pentium D's might be 64-bit, but I don't think that'd be an issue. If I can get this sorted out, the install will count as an epic win, first time I've ever experienced complete out of the box hardware support, printer included, plus compiz on an intel integrated graphics card.
